Giant gyrotropy due to electromagnetic-field coupling in a bilayered chiral structure.

We report experimental evidence that electromagnetic coupling between physically separated planar metal patterns located in parallel planes provides for extremely strong polarization rotatory power if one pattern is twisted with respect to the other, creating a chiral object. In terms of a rotary power per sample thickness equal to one wavelength, the bilayered structure rotates 5 orders of magnitude stronger than a gyrotropic crystal of quartz in the visible spectrum.

[The influence of non-ionizing electromagnetic fields on implantable cardiac medical devices].

AN INCREASINGLY FREQUENT PROBLEM: Since sources of electromagnetic interferences can alter the functioning of pacemakers (PM) and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ACD) are increasing and cover wide range of frequencies, from 0 to 300 GHz, including very low (VLF) and radio-frequencies (RF), carriers of such devices can suffer from decreased quality of life, without clinical impact, or even dangerous situations. PACEMAKERS: Pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators are usually well protected from external interference. With pacemakers, such problems are handled fairly well and the consequences are usually benign. REGARDING DEFIBRILLATION: An interference can result in the inappropriate functioning of the device, the first consequence of which is an unexpected shock for the patient or, conversely, the lack of effective treatment when the patient most needs it. With ICD, the data in the literature suggest more attention should be paid, notably with anti-theft detector gates.

Control of "choice" by application of the electromagnetic field equivalents of spoken words: mediation by emotional meaning rather than linguistic dimensions?

Electromagnetic equivalents (about 1 microT) of the acoustic signature of spoken words were applied across the temporoparietal lobes by an array of external solenoids. Participants were asked to select the target word within a group of words. The experimental group of 7 chose the target word or words that shared its emotional dimensions (activation, evaluation) more frequently than did the reference group of 6 who received no electromagnetic equivalents. Implications for the neurocognitive detection of the emotional (connotative) components of word stimuli when transformed to electromagnetic equivalents rather than direct images or "word sounds" are discussed.
