[Better registration of occupational diseases among railway workers].

The paper provides a scientific rationale for that it is necessary to improve the existing state statistic records, such as [symbol: see text] No. 125/Y "Occupational Disease or Intoxication Recording Schedule". The document fails to obtain "accumulated" data on the incidence of occupational diseases (OD), changes in the health status and working ability, to make an analysis of relationships between the working conditions and the development of OD. The "Schedule" has been improved, which records data on a patient rather than a diagnosis. The schedule is a final recording document, a sectorial register of railway occupational diseases, and it is of departmental character.

[The most dramatic train accident in Denmark: Gentofte 1897].

One of the most dramatic train accidents in Denmark happened at a railway station close to midnight on the 11th of July 1897. Forty passengers were killed and approximately 150 people were more or less seriously wounded. Three different actors involved in the accident (a stoker of the collided engine, a journalist and a physician) have later described the scenario of the disaster according to their professional backgrounds. The principles of disaster management, the emergency response including a rather quick involvement from different types of relevant professions, the triage and the prehospital treatment of victims seemed to have been adequate according to the framework at that time. The descriptions refer shortly to the psychopathological reactions following a life threatening experience which today are well defined and described as symptoms of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).

Accumulation rate of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) in the conditions of soil contamination with oil derivatives.

The present study concerns PCBs accumulation in soil at two depths as well as in Taraxacum officinale plants. An analysis of the distribution of different groups of PCBs congeners in plant and soil material revealed the highest content of hexa and hepta-CB fractions. Statistical test of pair comparison has revealed significant differences in accumulation rates for the following pairs: penta-chlorinated congeners are accumulated at a higher rate than tetra-chlorinated ones and hexa-chlorinated congeners are accumulated at a higher rate than penta-chlorinated ones. This phenomenon occurs in the area of railway junctions (areas heavily polluted with oil derivatives).

[Current state and prospects of development of railway hygiene].

Current planning in railway hygiene is conducted according to the special requirements of railway industry. Specific medical and prophylactic programs specified are on safety arrangements of railway workers, environmental protection in connection with intensive functioning of railways. The authors represent major prospective trends of research in occupational medicine and industrial ecology for railway transport.

[Safety problems of occupational activity during alcoholic intoxication].

It has been established that work efficiency of persons occupied by machine operating duties degrades markedly under the action of an acute alcoholic intoxication--less on real machines and more on simulators and when operating simple technical devices. Work efficiency degradation is manifested by the task execution time increase (to a lesser degree) and by erroneous action quantity increase after taking alcohol, i.e. by work reliability decease. Most heavily it is manifested during the first 0.7-1.5 hr. After taking alcohol. And direct work efficiency index is usually improved 12-16 hr. after taking alcohol. Increase of erroneous action quantity is caused probably by a series of physiological, psychophysiological and psychological changes in the condition of a man under the action of alcohol. Time of the day when the activity takes place after taking that dose of alcohol is practically non valid for changing work efficiency index.

[Occupational health evaluation of electromagnetic fields in electric trains and subway technologic areas].

The article represents measurements and hygienic evaluation of electromagnetic fields in rolling stock and various technologic areas of subway. Results prove that specification of MALs for electric transport magnetic fields is essential for workers and general population. Before the MALs specification, the authors suggest that temporary allowable levels should be set according to national and foreign research.

[Environmental effects on the course of active rheumatism in a migrant Siberian population].

AIM: To characterize antistreptococcal immune response in healthy subjects with cryoglobulinemia and rheumatic manifestations as well as a rheumatism course in population who came to Siberia to build and operate Baikal-Amur railway. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Siberian migrants were examined. Among them there were 203 patients with rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, and 1275 healthy subjects. 65 patients had active rheumatism, 106 healthy subjects had rheumatic manifestations and cryoglobulinemia with adaptation cryoglobulinemia syndrome. All the patients underwent examination of the cardiovascular system, standard laboratory tests and tests for antistreptolysine-0, antistreptokinase, antistreptohyaluronidase, streptococcal antigen, microbiological tests. The diagnosis of rheumatic fever was established on the basis of Kisel-Jones-Nesterov and revised Jones criteria. RESULTS: The adaptation cryoglobulinemia syndrome in healthy persons was associated with cardialgia, arthralgia, lumbalgia, myalgia, lymphadenopathy and Raynaud's phenomenon. Patients with rheumatic fever and adaptation cryoglobulinemia syndrome were predisposed to chronicity of primary rheumatic carditis, development of compound and combined valvular defects, arrhythmia and hemodynamic disturbances. CONCLUSION: The presence of the adaptation cryoglobulinemia syndrome aggravates the course of rheumatic fever and promotes its chronicity.
