DIMSCAN is a semiautomatic fluorescence-based digital image microscopy system that quantifies relative total (using a DNA stain) or viable (using fluorescein diacetate [FDA]) cell numbers in tissue culture multiwell plates ranging from 6 to 384 wells per plate. DIMSCAN is a rapid and efficient tool for conducting in vitro cytotoxicity assays across a 4 log dynamic range. The specificity of detecting viable cells with FDA is achieved by using digital image processing and chemical quenching of fluorescence in nonviable cells with eosin Y. Average scan time for the most commonly used format, a 96-well plate, is 6 min. Cytotoxicity for neuroblastoma cell lines measured by DIMSCAN was found to be comparable to manual Trypan blue dye exclusion counts or colony formation in soft agar, but with a significantly wider dynamic range, which enables drug combination studies used to detect synergistic or antagonistic interactions. The linearity of DIMSCAN was validated (r2 = 0.99967 +/- 0.0003) for cells stained with FDA deposited using a fluorescence-activated cell sorter, documenting a dynamic range > 4 logs, and the ability to detect a single viable cell in a well 93% of the time. DIMSCAN has been used to demonstrate preclinical activity of cytotostatic and cytotoxic drugs and drug combinations that have subsequently shown activity in clinical trials.

PC-CAI is a computer program that presents text characters from a word-processed file. The software was created to allow rapid authoring of computer-aided-instruction modules or multiple choice tests that give explanation and feedback to the student about their choice of responses. The program is IBM-PC/XT/AT compatible under MS-DOS. It is used in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for medical students to supplement faculty lectures and also to administer pre- and post-tests to those students. The program is additionally used to create practice tests for our residents to prepare for their in-training exams. The software's main forte is to create multiple choice question modules, with feedback and explanations, that serve as learning tools rather than just as testing tools. Its use has enabled our department to create a comprehensive set of teaching modules in a relatively short period of time. These modules are easily modifiable as medical concepts or teacher emphasis changes.
A computer program was developed for the IBM PC computer to be used for maternal serum alpha fetoprotein screening (MSAFP). This program, written in BASIC, 1) maintains a data base for patients tested, 2) allows input and storage of MSAFP results, 3) calculates the gestational age dependent result in multiple of the median (MOM), 4) makes an individualized interpretation of the result based on maternal age, weight and diabetes, 5) makes an appropriate recommendation for subsequent action based on the result, and 6) prints a report containing the above information. In addition, the program will print a daily log of patients tested, provides a follow-up sheet to assist in tracking abnormal results to term, converts the data files into files which can be easily intergrated into more powerful data base programs, and generates a monthly statement for billing purposes. The program can be easily modified by someone with minimal training in the BASIC programming language.
The computer usage has become essential nowadays and the Nursing staff meeting this technological improvement has been assimilating it in practice, which is started in Graduation course. As users of the computer division from a Nursing School we have observed students' complaints related to adequacy of the furniture used, then, we were interested in developing this research which has as object to analyze the furniture from the computer division according to the ergonomic recommendations and identify body posture adopted by the students in typing activity. The procedures used were performed in three stages, which were: free supervision of environment and furniture measure, surveillance of body posture and interviews. The results pointed out that the furniture is inappropriate referring to: fixed counter without foot support, without document case; chairs are not regulative, back support width out of recommended standards, there are no armrest and wheels, there are only four legs and the covering is slimy and stiff. Only in 18.6% of the observation period the students adopted to perfect posture in typing activity, that is, upright spinal column, elbows at the same level of the counter, deflected legs and supported feet. It is suggested that the workplace be planned for typing from known facts related to anthropometric dimension of the users and use of proper furniture in order to obtain a concordant set among furniture, milieu and user providing comfort and avoiding health problems.
