Children in a disaster: an overview.

Most children have psychopathological reactions to disasters, which are individually-based and vary according to age, developmental level, proximity to family members, specifics of their situation, losses during and after the disaster, and the responses of the family and community. Treatment should be individualized since children's improvement is not determined by parental response.

Racial attribution effects on clinical judgment: a failure to replicate among white clinicians.

The case profile of a young male community outpatient that had elicited racial expectancies from black clinicians was shown to a demographically similar sample of white clinicians. Manipulation of his racial attribution failed to influence impressions of psychobehavioral adjustment or therapeutic recommendations. In addition, the overall ratings given by the white assessors were more lenient than those given by the black assessors. The notion that white clinicians' evaluations of black patients are poorly insulated from the racial prejudices of the larger society continues to run counter to mounting experimental evidence. Its persistence in the absence of such confirmation is discussed in terms of the low credibility of analogue methodology in relation to personal conviction.

Malingering and malingering-like behavior: some clinical and conceptual issues.

Malingering phenomena are reconceptualized along a continuum of other-deceptive, and "malingering-like" mixed-deceptive and self-deceptive categories, depending upon the degree of the subject's conscious self-awareness. This schema heuristically expands the malingering concept to include its multivaried range of clinical presentations which are ubiquitously encountered but underdiscussed in the literature.

Studies in feminine psychology 6: Kundry.

The problem of feminine rage, feminine psychology, and feminine self-destruction must be understood as multiply determined and not merely an appropriate manifestation of social inequality in a male-dominated culture. This is illustrated by a study of pathological and borderline women, in the present paper represented by Wagner's creation from Parsifal, Kundry. Kundry suffers from pathological splitting, in which she oscillates from mature nurturing service to hatred, seduction, and destruction of men. What is most emphasized is her misery and guilt, which is a consequence of her reality testing being sufficiently intact for her to be aware of this splitting and its consequences for her. She receives no understanding from the men around her; even the hero or "pure fool" Parsifal at first attempts to strangle her like an animal. But Wagner's intuition emphasizes her conflict and guilt rather than the splitting and deficits, making her redemption possible. This approach to borderline psychopathology has a more hopeful prognosis, given the presence of a dedicated, determined, and competent psychoanalytic psychotherapist.
