[Evaluation of work environment in the flax textile industry. V. Air microflora in the flax spinning and flax weaving rooms].

Microbiological air pollution in spinning and weaving rooms was determined by aspiration impinger using an aeroscop (Chirana, Czechoslovakia). The air samples were taken on Petri dishes with Bacto-broth-agar (Difco) or Bacto-blood-agar (Difco). After incubation at 37 degrees C for 24 h the number of bacterial or mould colonies and bacterial cells per 1 m3 of the air was calculated. The number of bacterial cells in flax spinning rooms ranged from 10.5 X 10(3) to 12,5 X 10(4), while in flax weaving rooms--from 2,4 X 10(3) to 10(4) per 1 m3 of air. In the examined samples of the air the bacterial pollution was found to dominate (45,1--95%). Gram-positive sporing bacteria were most frequently recognized. In the air of weaving rooms some moulds: Mucor sp., Circinella sp., Hormodendrum sp., Vetricillum sp., Aspergillus sp. and Penicillum sp. were also found (16.8--54%). It was observed that the microbiological air pollution in spinning and weaving rooms of flax industry was greater than in cotton industry. A wet technology of flax spinning promotes microbiological pollution in the air of this kind of workposts. A high level of mould cells in the air at workposts enhances the risk of workers' exposure to mycotoxins.

[Efficacy of the use of barrier creams in the prevention of dermatological diseases in textile dyeing and printing plant workers: results of a randomized trial].

A total of 942 workers of 13 dyeing and printing factories in the area of Como (N. Italy) were examined in order to detect skin complaints on the hands and forearms. Of these, 868 were eligible for and consented to participate in a controlled and randomized experiment aimed at assessing the efficacy of using barrier creams in practical circumstances. 657 workers underwent all three control examinations arranged over about one year. In the randomized group for treatment with barrier creams the cumulative incidence of objective skin lesions was significantly lower than in the group in which no particular recommendation of use was made (44.5% versus 54.4% positive for objective examination in at least one of the three control examinations after recruitment: 95% confidence limits of the difference between 2%-17% percentages; 39.9% versus 47.0% in subjects who were negative at the recruitment examination, 59.0% versus 76.8% in subjects who were positive at the recruitment examination). The use of a hydrocarbon cream was significantly more effective than using a silicone cream (95% confidence limits of the differences of cumulative incidences: -10.9% +20.7% comparing silicone creams with non-treatment; 2.8%-20.2% comparing hydrocarbon creams with non-treatment).

[Hygienic evaluation of working conditions of acrylonitrile fiber processing at textile factories].

Main unfavourable factors of working environment in acrylonitrilic fibres processing are high concentrations of dust, high noise levels, considerable share of hard manual operations. Complex of unfavourable factors leads to reduction of muscular endurance to static effort, prolongation of motor reaction to light irritation, decrease of cellular and humoral immunity of working women. Suggested effective measures reduced dust content in working zone air.

[Effect of machine modernization on the level of noise and its characteristics in the textile industry].

Results of noise measurements on work post before and after modernization are presented. In the majority of examined work areas noise levels were lowered by 2--20 dB(A) after machine modernization. Present noise level is there about 90 dB(A). On the other hand limit the noise level on work post of rewinders, trosiners and looms has not been changed. So far noise level on these areas has exceeded permissible level by 5--14 dB(A).
