Eyeblink activity was examined as a psychophysiological index of cognitive processing during a typical semantic priming task. To examine the expectancy-induced effects, the proportion of semantically related pairs was controlled. 8 undergraduates engaged in a lexical decision task for target words. Each condition differed in target type (Semantically Related with prime vs Unrelated vs Nonword) and proporion of Semantically Related pairs (High vs Low). As a result, the temporal distribution of blinks was clearly influenced by the semantic priming effect. The peak of blink bursts, which is correlated with the end of cognitive processing, occurred the fastest in the semantically Related and High proportion condition. While blink latency showed larger individual differences, the temporal distribution of blinks was suggested as a more efficient index of cognitive processing.
This final rule adds the requirement that, for cost reporting periods ending on or after February 1, 1997, most skilled nursing facilities and home health agencies must submit cost reports currently required under the Medicare regulations in a standardized electronic format. This rule also allows a delay or waiver of this requirement where implementation would result in financial hardship for a provider. The provisions of this rule allow for more accurate preparation and more efficient processing of cost reports.
The high complex requirements on information and information flow in todays hospitals can only be accomplished by the use of modern Information Systems (IS). In order to achieve this, the Stiftung Orthopädische Universitätsklinik has carried out first the Project "Strategic Informations System Planning" in 1993. Then realizing the necessary infrastructure (network; client-server) from 1993 to 1997, and finally started the introduction of modern IS (SAP R/3 and IXOS-Archive) in the clinical area. One of the approved goal was the replacement of the paper medical record by an up-to-date electronical medical record. In this article the following three topics will be discussed: the difference between the up-to-date electronical medical record and the electronically archived finished cases, steps performed by our clinic to realize the up-to-date electronical medical record and the problems occurred during this process.
Two electrocardiographs, an analog-digital electrocardiograph with preliminary analog filtering of signal and a smart cardiograph implemented as a PC-compatible device without preliminary analog filtering, are considered. Advantages and disadvantages of ECG systems based on artificial intelligence are discussed. ECG interpretation modes provided by the two electrocardiographs are considered. The reliability of automatic ECG interpretation is assessed. Problems of rational use of automated ECG processing systems are discussed.
Having established that the computer is capable of undertaking a wide range of complex processes in a short period of time, it becomes necessary to examine the range of devices which may be connected to a computer, and the methods of establishing communications between the user and the central processing unit (CPU).
Norwegian general practitioners are installing computers in their offices at an increasing rate. More than half of them now run their practice using electronic journals and electronic exchange of information with hospitals, pharmacies etc. There is wide interest among colleagues in the development of new software approaches and packages for running the office. At present, this development is marked by creativity and competitiveness. In fact, Norway has become a market leader within GP-software exporting as far as to Australia. In this article, the seven packages currently available are described by experienced users, and compared from a technical point of view.

The aim of the present paper was to assess, on the basis of an analysis of the relevant modern, national and international literature as available in the GDR, the present state of the introduction of data processing to stomatology and to deduce recommendations for further lines of work.
The authors describe a data retrieval system called REDATAM, Retrieval of Data for Small Area by Microcomputer. "The interactive REDATAM system, in English and Spanish versions, was created to solve the problem of providing small-area population and housing information by using an IBM or fully compatible microcomputer to store the microdata of an entire census on a hard disk (or laser disks for larger countries) and to permit any tabulation to be produced rapidly for any area down to city blocks or smaller....REDATAM may play an important role in the 1990 censuses in the Latin American and Caribbean countries since the system will permit the provision of timely small-area services (and at the national level in the Caribbean countries) before, as well as after, the regular data processing and publication of results are ready."
The Automatic Vocal Transaction Analyzer was designed to recognize the pattern of certain variables in spontaneous vocal transactions. In addition, it records these variables directly in a machine-readable form and preserves their sequential relationships. This permits the immediate extraction of data by a digital computer. The AVTA system reliability has been shown to be equal to or better than that of a trained human operator in uncomplicated interaction. The superiority of the machine was demonstrated in complex interactions which tax the information processing abilities of the human observer.
Template matching together with the comprehensive theory of image formation in electron microscope provides an optimal (in Bayesian sense) tool for solving one of the outstanding problems in single particle analysis, i.e., automatic selection of particle views from noisy micrograph fields. The method is based on the assumption that the reference three-dimensional structure is known and that the relevant parameters of the model of the image formation process can be estimated. In the first stage of the procedure, a set of possible particle views is generated using the available reference structure. The template images are constructed as linear combinations of available particle views using a clustering technique. Next, the micrograph noise characteristic is established using an automated contrast transfer function (CTF) estimation procedure. Finally, the CTF parameters calculated are used to construct a matched filter and correlation functions corresponding to the available template images are calculated. In order to alleviate the problem of the biased caused by varying image formation conditions, a decision making strategy based on the predicted distribution of correlation coefficients is proposed. It is demonstrated that due to the inclusion of CTF considerations, the template matching method performed very well in a broad range of microscopy conditions.
A personal computer-based technique was developed that reduces the extent of human efforts in obtaining data, like numerical density of profiles on area, describing the distribution of specific features of histological sections, e.g., density of synaptic profiles or of histochemical reaction products in specified tissue compartments. The procedure consists of (i) marking the objects to be counted, (ii) recording the borderlines of (reference) tissue domains of interest, and (iii) allocating the marked objects to the corresponding domains automatically. This automatic sorting of objects into defined tissue domains is achieved by an algorithm operating on two sets of coordinates: (i) coordinates of points that constitute the boundary of tissue domains (perimeter points) and (ii) coordinates of points marking the particular objects to be sorted. The principle of the sorting calculation is to construct 'segments' of the loop by lines parallel to the ordinate which pass through neighbouring perimeter points. The 'items' to be sorted are classified by the sign of marker flags allocated to each point depending on which side of the perimeter segment they are located. Segmentation and classification procedures are sequentially repeated along the entire perimeter of each domain specified by the operator which may result during the procedure in multiple changes of the sign of the flags. The internal or external location of each item finally is represented by the last sign of its flag. Objects, allocated to domains can be counted and processed further for numerical density determination.
