Emergency mosquito aerial spray response to the 2004 Florida hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne: an overview of control results.

In total, 43 aerial spray missions were conducted in 26 Florida counties to control mosquito populations after each of the 4 hurricanes making landfall in Florida in 2004. Mosquitoes were trapped before and after each spray mission to determine the percentage (%) of control for the West Nile virus vector Culex nigripalpus (64.1%), the floodwater pest mosquito Psorophora columbiae (69.7%), and for all species combined (67.7%). A discussion on these results and suggestions for future efforts are presented.

Psychiatric dimensions of disaster: patient care, community consultation, and preventive medicine.

The majority of persons exposed to a disaster do well and have only mild, transitory symptoms. However, some individuals develop psychiatric illness postdisaster. Such illnesses include those that are secondary to physical injury and sickenss as well as specific trauma-related psychiatric disorders such as acute stress disorder. The extent of the psychiatric morbidity and mortality that develops in individuals in the community depends on the type of disaster, the degree of injury sustained, the amount of life threat, and the duration of community disruption. In this paper we examine the posttraumatic responses of direct concern to psychiatrists working in a community exposed to a disaster. We review the epidemiology of posttraumatic responses, the interface of psychiatry and traumatic stress, the psychiatric disorders associated with trauma, and psychiatric consultation to the disaster community. Overall, psychiatric intervention after a disaster is based on the principles of preventive medicine and includes community consultation and outreach programs with the goals of identifying high-risk groups, promoting community recovery, and minimizing social disruption.

Bacteriological analysis of water samples from tsunami hit coastal areas of Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu.

Water borne diseases such as cholera, enteric fever and dysentery were expected after the tsunami, which hit the coastal areas of Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu. In the present study 151 drinking water sources were collected from the tsunami affected villages and relief shelters and tested for coliforms and pathogens. Nine well water samples were also collected for specific bacteriological analysis. Presence of coliforms was detected in 56 (37%) water samples. One isolate each of Salmonella Paratyphi B and NAG Vibrio were isolated from two well water samples. There was no report of acute diarrhoeal diseases or typhoid illness during the post tsunami period monitored by a field microbiology laboratory for a month.

[Determinant factors of community-based disaster preparedness: a case study of flood prone area].

This study examined the determinants of willingness to participate in a community-based disaster preparedness scheme. The theory of reasoned action (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1977, 1980; Fishbein & Ajzen, 1975) was applied as a basic model and was complemented by the factor of concern about disaster. A structural equation modeling was performed to validate this model. The hypothetical model was supported for the data from the residents (N = 3 036) of an area with a high risk of flood damage. It was clarified that the subjective norm and concern about flood positively contributed to the intention of participating in a community-based disaster preparedness scheme. The perceived cost of preparedness was the inhibitory factor of participating in such a scheme.
