Cemental tear treated with guided tissue regeneration: a case report 3 years after initial treatment.

Cemental tear is a rare but probably underdiagnosed condition that may be a factor in rapid periodontal breakdown. The present case report describes the regenerative treatment of a periodontal lesion around a mandibular canine in a 50-year-old woman. The preoperative radiograph revealed a small cemental tear within an intrabony lesion. The three-wall bony lesion was treated with a barrier membrane and followed for 3 years. Periodontal pocket reduction was 5.5 mm, and attachment gain amounted to 3.5 to 4.5 mm Standardized radiographs showed remarkable, 1.6-mm bone fill of the intrabony lesion. Also, a band of keratinized tissue had formed.

A case of dental mutilation.

A case of ritual mutilation in a fourteen-year-old Ethiopian girl is described. When the girl was three years old she had frequent stomach problems. According to tribal tradition her illness was thought to arise from her mandibular primary canines and these teeth were removed by a medicine man. The extraction damaged the tooth germs of the succedaneous teeth and resulted in deformed permanent canines. This is the first report of a case of dental mutilation from Ethiopia.

Enhanced fixed prosthetics with a connective tissue ridge augmentation.

Augmentation of the partially edentulous ridge can significantly improve the final prosthetic result. The subepithelial connective tissue graft is the treatment of choice to enhance soft tissue contours. The major advantage of the connective tissue graft is the preservation of the existing gingival coloration and tissue characteristics. A case is described that utilizes the subepithelial connective tissue graft for augmentation of a maxillary anterior ridge prior to prosthetic rehabilitation.

Causes and pattern of tooth extraction in children treated at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

A study of 429 children age 0-15 years who attended the paedodontic clinic of the Department of preventive Dentistry for treatment from January 1995 to December 1995 with a view of assessing causes and pattern of tooth extraction was carried out. 51.52% of the children had extraction. Dental caries and its sequelae accounted for the highest indication for extraction (57.47%) while periodontal disease accounted for the least (0.45%). Deciduous teeth were mostly extracted with the deciduous molars being the teeth frequently extracted. The frequency of extractions shows that a challenging situation exists for those engaged in the organisation of dental health education and emphasis should be on prevention.

Removable partial denture in special clinical conditions.

Controversies concerning the prosthetic treatment through removable or fixed dentures until the age of 18 existed and continue to exist due to the structural instability of the stomatognathic system. In this communication we present a special experience, acquired about the treatment of some clinical situations in which the removable partial denture has been found appropriate with respect to certain features as bone substance loss as a consequence of traumatisms or tumor extirpations, oligodontia, cleft lip and palate. The clinical situations that will be presented refer to a group of 29 patients treated during a period of 10 years in the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry within the Faculty of Stomatology of Iaşi, Romania. Our conclusion is that the children and teenager patients prosthetic therapy differs with respect to the type and etiology of the teeth loss, the affected zone, the stage of the growth and development process of the stomatognathic system, the technological conditions, the patient social conditions, and last but not least, by his affective attitude regarding the teeth loss and the denture type. The removable partial denture for children and teenagers represents, with some exceptions, an emergency or transitory solution until the necessary conditions for other therapeutic stages are fulfilled. Taking into consideration the tissues lability on which it is applied, the removable partial denture requires a rigorous postprosthetic therapy.

[A comparative analysis of the efficacy of different types of filling materials in the surgical elimination of tooth perforations (experimental morphological research)].

Based on the experimental morphological findings, the authors compare the efficiency of tooth perforation repair in experimental animals by surgical method using Dyract compomer, Base Line glass ionomeric cement, and Ostim-100 osteoplastic material. The data indicate a high efficiency of this method. Base Line material is preferable for filling the perforation in dental wall, as it reliably performed the isolating function under experimental conditions.
