The authors have given pride of place to an old system, punched cards selectors, which are fairly inexpensive to run, and are very flexible in their use. Each card has a part reserved for identification purposes (a case report number or a dated reference to an indexed list of articles) and another part for identification of a certain number of key-words with their corresponding numerical codings, which are also listed in a thesaurus. These key-words serve both for classifying case reports from each department, and for the bibliographic reference cards. When a series of cases are being studied. However, a new thesaurus has to be established during the course of the study. The 960 possible perforations on the international IBM card are largely sufficient as the number of key-words (case reports or bibliographic card-index codings) is not more than 700 and it is unusual to require more than 900 items during the course of a study. The authors find this system very satisfactory and no longer use large computers.
The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine utilizes a full-time medical librarian in a non-conventional position as indexer-bibliographer for its computerized Item Library. The responsibilities of the librarian are to edit, index, and reference items for inclusion in the data base; maintain the currency of the Item Library; search the collection; and construct examinations, including a comprehensive quarterly examination, required of all students in this six-year school. Early research in computer-assisted test construction suggested the need for a comprehensive, standard approach to the classification of item content. A professional medical librarian using MeSH descriptors satisfies this need. In existence since 1973, the Item Library is now composed of over 12,000 multiple-choice questions in the basic sciences and clinical medicine. All questions are indexed with up to fifteen MeSH descriptors and referenced to literature sources. The items may be retrieved using any single MeSH term or combination of terms. The collection is available at all times on terminals, and students are encouraged to make use of it for self study. Selected examinations are made available to other institutions by arrangement. Experience has proven both the value of this resource for self study and student evaluation, and the necessity of establishing and continuing the librarian's role.

Introducing the article, the author emphasizes the importance of preschool and school instruction of the hospitalized children. Although this education and instruction programme differs in many particularities from that in normal schools, it should adhere to the same principles regarding the content and organization of the educational process and promote collaboration between the teaching staff in regular schools and teachers in hospitals. "Play therapy' is only one of the aspects of this activity and it is our task as pediatricians to provide a satisfactory number of full-time preschool and school teachers on the ward. Good planning in this field is of utmost importance. Suitable facilities for playing and learning are necessary, as well as toys, books and other possibilities for handcraft skills. Appropriate staff rooms should be provided for the hospital teaching staff. Today, the idea of hospital education and instruction programme is accepted and teachers and preschool teachers already work in some pediatric hospitals. Our task is, however, that kindergarten and school find their place in each children's hospital. This should also be enacted by law.

Periodical loans, photocopy requests, and reading room use of back volumes of periodicals at the University of Bergen Dental School library were registered during a twelve-month period. Loans were sorted by title and year, and titles were grouped by specialty and language. Total borrowing was 2.242, and the annual aging factor was 0.89 (half-life 5.8 years). Twelve periodicals accounted for 50% of total borrowing. While most specialized dental journals had a lower aging factor than dental journals as a whole, orthodontic journals had an aging factor of 0.92 (half-life 8.7 years). Non-English-language journals accounted for 22% of borrowing. Scandinavian-language titles (16% of borrowing) had a lower aging factor (0.87, half-life 5.1 years) and seemed to be used more as news journals. The languages of other journals used were German (4.7% of borrowing), French, and Russian.
