Some aspects on the dermatoglyphics of normal and defective children in Bulgaria.

By comparison with a sample of normal Bulgarian children aged 3 to 18 years, children with visual, auditory and mental insufficiency differ in the relative frequency of pattern types on the digits. These differences are particularly noticeable on the second and fourth digits. It is suggested that the restriction to these two digits is related to the differing evolutionary histories of the different digits, and differences in their innervation.

Population relationships of Lapps as reflected by quantitative dermatoglyphics.

Relationships and divergence among five Lapp samples were assessed using finger and palm interdigital ridge counts. Lapp relationships to other Uralic speakers were also assessed. Multivariate minimum FST values expressing differentiation among Lapps are 0.012. These values are higher than those for most European populations and show the importance of isolation and genetic drift in Lapp populations. Skolt Lapps and Lapps of the Kola Peninsula are generally more similar to each other and are differentiated from Mountain and Fisher Lapps. When Lapps are placed within the context of Uralic speakers in general, they show a marked affinity for the Finnic speakers and are differentiated from the Samoyedic speakers of Siberia. The ridge counts support the hypothesis of a European origin for the Lapps.

Finger dermatoglyphics in a Mediterranean population (Murcia, Spain): pattern types and pattern intensity index.

Finger pattern types and pattern intensity index in 163 males and 184 females from the region of Murcia in southeast Spain show sex and bilateral differences. Comparison of the data with those from other Spanish populations reveal, that the Murcian male values are within the range of Spanish variation, whereas the female sample is characterized by extreme frequencies of arches (maximal) and whorls (minimal). This is significantly different from most of the populations compared.

A study of fluctuating dermatoglyphic asymmetry in the sibs and parents of cleft lip propositi.

Fluctuating asymmetry was studied in cleft lip propositi and their normal sibs and parents. The traits examined were a-b ridge counts and fingerprint patterns. Propositi with a family history of this congenital malformation and their normal sibs and parents were significantly different from the controls for this type of asymmetry. Propositi without a family history and their normal sibs and parents were similar to the controls. These results support the hypothesis that familial and sporadic cases of congenital cleft lip are different entities and give evidence for a genetic mechanism in the parents and sibs of the familial cases that may account for this congenital disorder and, concomitantly, increased fluctuating asymmetry.
