355 apprentices between the age of 15 and 20 were examined. The results show the present state of health, according to the number of patients sent to specialists for diagnosing, controlling and for therapy. There were 69 patients (19.4%) suffering from orthopedic, 52 (14.6%) from internal, 39 (11%) from ophthalmological diseases, 16 patients (4.5%) with adipositas, 6 (1.1%) who suffered from ear-nose- and throat-disease and 6 (1.1%) with dermatological problems. Continuous preventive examinations of elder children and young persons seem indispensable. This is a call to paediatricians and health authorities.
The paper provides the results of the examination of 112 convalescents of different age using the method of determining the class of ability to work according to the response to the active orthostatic test. A comparative analysis was conducted of different methods of occupational rehabilitation under conditions of workshop medical unit of a large industrial enterprise. It was found that the most effective method is the transfer of convalescents to a more easy work for physiologically substantiated periods of time. Validated criteria of assessing the efficacy of rehabilitation measures are proposed.
Participation in paid work in competitive industry through placement in supported employment is compared and analyzed for 278 severely disabled persons. Differential outcomes are described for persons with chronic mental illness, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, and dual diagnosis of chronic mental illness and mental retardation. Results indicated that supported employment appears to be an effective means of assisting these historically unemployable individuals to acquire and retain work. Cross-disability group differences were found in areas such as hourly wages, type of employment, services provided by employment specialists, and job retention. The results represent a baseline from which to evaluate future efforts at competitive work placement for persons with severe disabilities, using the supported-employment model.
A unique collaborative program whose goal is to facilitate the return of disabled dentists to active dental practice is described. This approach includes comprehensive interdisciplinary evaluation and remediation, and it has succeeded in revealing previously undiagnosed impairments which should be considered in the formulation of a rehabilitation plan. A case report illustrates the process. This program can serve as a model for similar programs addressing the needs of other disabled health care professionals.

Intensification of the educational-industrial training of turners-to-be under the conditions of an ++inter-school educational-industrial integrated works produces a training effect on the 14-year old pupils (9-th form), evidence of which is the development of features of physiological fatigue and stabilization of adaptational processes of the cardio-vascular system. Early involvement of pupils in the productive labour facilitates activation of professionally significant physiological functions, increase in the motor activity, reduction of the level of acute morbidity with the absence of unfavourable changes in health status and physical development.
The number of persons suffering from chronic mental disease but living outside the psychiatric hospital in the community, is rising, resulting in an increasing demand for facilities for occupation, occupational therapy and rehabilitation and for paid employment. The past few years have seen a distinct increase in the number of sheltered workplaces for the mentally ill. This development has also led to qualitative differentiation in the offers. In the region of Westphalia there are currently some 940 work places in special departments for the mentally handicapped at workshops for the disabled. Self-help enterprises and those offering opportunities for persons living on social benefits or pensions to supplement their income currently offer some 470 workplaces for the mentally ill, ten psychiatric hospitals are giving their former patients an opportunity to take part in occupational therapy as outpatients. Considerable differences are to be registered with regard to the offers of work, the forms of organization, the tasks involved and the types of supervision. Finally, a specialized psychosocial service has been established within the past four years by the head welfare office of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe; this service is designed for the care of the mentally ill at their work place. Like many developments in social psychiatry, the differentiation of occupational rehabilitation has resulted from practical experience. Empirical findings on the indication for and efficiency of individual measures are virtually non-existent. A prospective five-year study is planned to investigate further results.
