Listeners' perceptual strategies in word recognition: shadowing misarticulated speech.

The purpose of the study was to examine the perceptual salience of various types of phonetic, lexical, and prosodic information by examining subjects' responses to altered words in a continuous speech-shadowing task. 48 subjects shadowed a prose passage in which the word initial consonant of 14 two-syllable words was altered by either mispronouncing or deleting it. Analysis of responses showed that subjects made use of lexical stress and stressed vowel information during word recognition to cope with the altered auditory signal.

Body image disturbance in anorexia nervosa: beyond body image.

In this paper the literature on body image disturbance in anorexic patients is reviewed. After a decade of experimental investigation of body image in anorexia nervosa, where old and new techniques have been used and where a large number of correlations have been identified, what do we really know? The findings have been conflicting but some regularities exist. It is hypothesized that the conflicting results may be related to the presence of different subgroups among anorexics and different types of body image disturbance. Body size estimation is only one dimension of body image perception. Likewise, body size overestimation is only one aspect of body image perception. Likewise, body size overestimation is only one aspect of body image disturbance. Some, but not all anorexics, overestimate their body size, and those who do, seem to have poor prognosis. Body size overestimation is not confined to anorexics. It is not known whether it is a function of a general perceptual/cognitive disorder, but it does seem to be stable over time. The implications of the presence of other psychiatric conditions in anorexic patients are discussed and suggestions for future research and for practice are made.

Visual-perceptual abnormalities in delusional misidentification.

Delusional misidentification syndromes are often found in conjunction with visual-perceptual abnormalities. These abnormalities appear to be independent of visual hallucinations and are illusory in nature. A case of delusional misidentification with visual-perceptual abnormalities is presented. Cognitive and visual phenomenology suggests that careful recording of visual abnormalities may shed light on the relation between delusional misidentification and abnormal visual cognition.

The sexual adjustment of chronic schizophrenics: a preliminary study.

A comparison of a group of chronic schizophrenics with controls showed that: the patients had significantly less interest in sex, frequency of intercourse, and satisfaction from sex; the percentage of individuals with sexual dreams and sexual fantasies did not differ between the two groups; the severity of psychopathology influenced frequency of intercourse and satisfaction from sex, and the length of institutionalization influenced interest in sex; the schizophrenics had a variety of sexual disorders, but there was a significant difference between the sexes in disturbances of thought and perception; and, significantly more male schizophrenics, in comparison with females, had sexual dysfunction associated with pharmacotherapy, but feminization in the males was far from predominant. The patients' sexual disorders are not disturbing to the social life of the open mental hospital or the community surrounding it.

Psychiatric phenomena in Alzheimer's disease. II: Disorders of perception.

In a sample of 178 patients with AD, visual hallucinations had been experienced by 13% and auditory hallucinations by 10%. Thirty per cent had misidentification syndromes; these were associated with a younger age and younger age at onset of illness, and proportionally more men than women were affected. There was a reduced 30-month mortality rate in this group. Subjects with hallucinations had a greater deterioration in cognitive function at 12-month follow-up, which could not be accounted for by neuroleptic medication.

Abnormal subjective time experience in depression.

Abnormality of subjective time experience is well recognised in psychiatric illness. Earlier authors suggested that slowed time experience in depression is an aspect of psychomotor retardation, while more recently it has been argued that this disturbance is non-specifically linked to the global severity of the depressive syndrome. This study offers evidence that both views can be justified: slowed time awareness is a common symptom of depression, related particularly to retardation, and to the severity of the mood disturbance. Some of the experimental difficulties in this kind of research are illustrated.

Somatic delusions in schizophrenia and the affective psychoses.

BACKGROUND: Delusions relating to the body, a ready source of information about the immediate experiences of psychotic patients, have not been systematically studied. We attempted an account of the phenomena, looking for differences between diagnostic groupings in the type and lateralisation of such phenomena, and for evidence of localisation. METHOD: Somatic delusions elicited at interview with 550 Research Diagnostic Criteria-diagnosed psychotic patients were categorised according to content, and the results were compared across diagnostic groupings. RESULTS: Significant differences were demonstrated, both at the level of individual delusions and in the nature and overall pattern of such delusions. There were also differences between diagnostic groups in the choice of body parts involved. Among male patients there were significant differences in laterality between the groups, with schizophrenic subjects locating abnormal phenomena principally on the left and depressive subjects on the right. A provisional taxonomy of bodily delusions was developed. CONCLUSION: Phenomenological differences between the psychoses were demonstrated and the results offer some support for current hypotheses of localisation of brain dysfunction in the psychotic illnesses.

Further studies of a measure of adience-abience: reliability.

Previous studies have suggested adequate reliability for a measure of perceptual adience-abience based on the HABGT in view of significant evidence concerning its construct and predictive validity. The present study explored the test-retest reliability of this scale with 40 process schizophrenics over a two-week interval. Reliability was found to be adequate for both males and females (rho equals .84) for the total scale. The four components of the scale were similarly found to be reliable. No subject changed on retest with respect to adient or abient orientation. Interjudge reliability was very high (rho = .912).

Psychopathology scale of the Hutt adaptation of the Bender-Gestalt Test: reliability.

The test-retest reliability of the Hutt Adaptation of the Bender-Gestalt test was explored with a population of 40 process schizophrenics over a two-week interval. The total Psychopathology Scale Score was found to have high retest reliability for both male and female patients (rho = .87 for males and .83 for females). Moreover the three major components for the Scale were found to have high reliability, and fairly high reliabilities were obtained for patients scoring high as well as low on the Scale. Interjudge reliability was also found to be very high (rho = .895), confirming previous studies in this respect. On these grounds, the Scale offers promise both for clinical and research purposes.
