Red-orange Mycobacterium species (the rhodochrous group) were isolated from the water of the Arctic regions; they were described, and the structure of lipids and the assimilation of oil products of low temperatures were comparatively studied in the arctic water and soil Mycobacterium species. The composition of usual fatty and mycolic acids was studied in two strains growing in a medium with hexadecane. Palmitic acid prevailed among fatty acids in the both strains; mycolic acids were represented by the compounds C34:0 and C34:1 (Mycobacterium brevicale) and C32:0 and C:34:0 (Mycobacterium sp.). The presence of unsaturated mycolic acids in the cells correlated with their capability to assimilate hydrocarbons at low temperatures.

The method is based on drawing a known volume of air through a tube filled with activated carbon. Water vapour, adsorbed together with hydrocarbons is removed from charcoal by passing dry nitrogen. Drying with nitrogen does not result in any decrease in the quantity of hydrocarbon adsorbed. The quantity of hydrocarbons is determined by weighing the tube before and after sampling. The authors investigated the dynamics of drying the charcoal from adsorbed water as well as the efficiency of hydrocarbon adsorption on charcoal. In addition, they established the conditions for samples collection. The range of the method is from 250 g/m3 to 10 000 g/m3.

A gas chromatographic method for determination of extraction naphtha and benzene has been developed. The best parameters of chromatographic separation were found. Under those conditions it is possible to estimate the total concentration of all ingredients of extraction naphtha as one peak clearly separated from benzene peak. Two methods of calibration curve preparation were considered. One of them consists in preparation of calibration curve from extraction naphtha standard solutions. The other one consists in preparation of calibration curve from standard extraction naphtha vapours adsorbed on charcoal.

Accidentally occurring hydrocarbon poisoning during early childhood is a frequent and in most cases benign event. Nevertheless there is a potential risk of more serious consequences. We describe such a case. Respiratory symptoms are of the greatest concern. They include cough, tachypnoea, and in the more serious cases cyanosis and respiratory failure. Moreover, symptoms from the gastrointestinal tract are common. Treatment includes prevention of aspiration, symptomatic treatment and in more serious cases respiratory support.
