[The effect of acute and chronic overheating on morphological changes in the liver].

Disturbances were disclosed in the functioning of the lysosomal and vacuolar apparatus in an electronic and histochemical investigation of 75 Wistar albino rats and 10 control animals exposed to acute and chronic overheating, with the numbers and structure of lysosomes undergoing changes, lysosomal membranes disrupting, which event was accompanied by an outgo of lysosomal contents into the cellular cytoplasm and beyond. There was no longer Golgi apparatus as a single whole; cellular cytoplasm stored lipid drops of low electron density with membrane inclusion and products of reaction to acid phosphatase in their matrix. Disruption of lysosomes and identification of acid phosphatase in cellular cytoplasm and Disse's space was presumably a cause of damage to the Golgi apparatus.

Residual disinfection of some preparations and substances.

The results of our experiments over many years point to the possibility of practical application of disinfectants of residual effect. In our opinion, further investigations should be carried out in the following two directions: detection of new means and preparations showing uniform properties and development of an optimum method of their application. We believe that residual disinfection will play a role in the prophylaxis of hospitalism.

[Ground-based speleo-climatic wards and the experience with their use in bronchial asthma].

Ambient air in ground wards made to contain natural potassium-sodium salt is close in characteristics to the atmosphere of underground wards but has a number of specificities: daily fluctuations of concentrations of light aeroions and aerosol particles, elevated concentration of light aeroions concentration, low radiation background, minimal bacterial contamination. The stay in ground wards brings great benefit for patients with bronchial asthma. Ground speleo-climatic wards are perspective in nonpharmacological treatment of patients with allergic respiratory diseases.

[Halotherapy in the combined treatment of chronic bronchitis patients].

Halotherapy proved to be a highly effective method in a complex sanatorium treatment of patients with chronic bronchitis. Its use promotes more rapid liquidation of clinical manifestations of disease, improves indices of vent function of lungs, especially those values that characterize bronchial conduction (volume of forced exhalations per second, index Tiffno), increases tolerance to physical load, normalizes indices of reduced immunity and leads to increasing the effectiveness of patient treatment in sanatorium.

[New approaches to hygienic assessment of machines used in the construction of railways].

The stock of railway machines has been greatly replaced by that new-generation ones that have a high capacity and can themselves move at high speeds. This changes the working conditions of the staff and the conditions of their driving. The new conditions promotes the development of new standard requirements and the methods of tests and assessing the indices of unfavorable working conditions.

The effects of food withdrawal and darkening on lipid peroxidation of laying hens in high ambient temperatures.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of feed withdrawal and darkening on the antioxidative status of laying hens in high ambient temperatures between 30-40 degrees C. We determined vitamins A and E, lipid peroxidation as thiobarbituric-acid reactive substances (TBARS), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and reduced glutathione (GSH) in the serum, liver and muscle. Sixteen week old hens (Ross Brown) were divided into 3 groups of 30 hens each. The first group was used as a control. Hens in the second (feed withdrawal) group were subjected to feed removal between 14-18 h during the summer. Hens in the third (darkening) group were subjected to darkening of the hens house with black curtains between 14-18 h. At the end of 16 weeks, blood serum, liver and breast muscle samples were taken from all animals and analysed. Vitamins A and E levels in serum and liver were significantly (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) higher in feed withdrawal and darkened groups than in control group whereas the serum levels of the darkening group were highest. GSH-Px activity and GSH level in liver and muscle were also significantly (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) higher in feed withdrawal and the darkening group than in control. However, TBARS levels in liver and muscle were significantly (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) lower in feed withdrawal and darkening groups compared with control group, whereas the level of the darkening group was the lowest. In conclusion, we observed that feed withdrawal and darkening of hens in high temperatures during summertime resulted in an increase of antioxidant enzymes and vitamins levels and in a decrease of lipid peroxidation.

[The scientific validation and outlook for the practical use of halo-aerosol therapy].

The paper describes a new medical technique--halo-aerosol therapy, the main acting factor of which is dry highly dispersed aerosol of sodium chloride in natural concentration. Halo-aerosol therapy represents a new trend in aerosol medicine. It includes two methods: halotherapy and halo-inhalation. Biophysical and pathophysiological foundations of the new method, how it can be realized are outlined. Clinical reasons are provided for application of halo-aerosol therapy for prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with respiratory diseases. Characteristics and differences of the two halo-aerosol therapy variants are analysed.

[Microclimatic properties of the Triatoma brasiliensis habitat].

Vector-borne transmission of Chagas disease in Northeast Brazil is basically by Triatoma brasiliensis. It is thus crucial to determine this species' microclimatic preferences as limiting factors for its distribution and ability to infest domestic environments. We analyze the microclimatic properties of the shelters in which these insects are found in wild, domestic, and peridomiciliary environments in the State of Ceará, at Brazil. We measure temperature and relative humidity (RH) every 15 minutes for 3 days. Thermal variation was greatly dampened inside both domiciliary refuges and the more protected internal places in wild stony sites. For RH, we observed a similar dampening pattern, but mean RH was lower in both domiciliary refuges and wild ones inside stony sites as compared to reference levels in the surrounding environment. The results are discussed with regard to this species' microclimatic preferences in the laboratory and its potential as determinants of its geographical distribution.

A novel vented microisolation container for caging animals: microenvironmental comfort in a closed-system filter cage.

We designed a closed-system cage with vent ports that would allow continuous airflow in the occupied cage to ensure adequate ventilation and gas exchange. In this system, the metabolic heat loads of mice generate upward thermal air currents. Heat exits via the exhaust port, and room air enters via the intake port, providing adequate ventilation. Simulations based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) helped us to optimize the cage's design. CFD simulations and smoke visualizations with a feeder-trough assembly illustrated the one-pass air circulation pattern and the lack of air recirculation, turbulence, and dead air space in our system. We used hot-film anemometry and smoke-test methodologies to show that adequate ventilation was provided. In a room with still air (0 air changes per hour [ACH]), a cage fitted with double wire-cloth filters (40 mesh size) and occupied by five mice has at least 12 ACH, whereas the same cage occupied by one mouse has 6 ACH. After five mice had occupied the cage for a week, its average temperature was 0.58C, relative humidity was 34%, and ammonia concentration was 3 ppm higher than that of the room. Our novel vented microisolation cage provides adequate intracage ACH, isolates mice from environmental contaminants, and contains allergenic particles within the cage in an environment appropriate for the species.
