The results and problems are referred to of the mass and model implementation in this country in the past 5 years of biotechnical methods of reproduction in industrial pig farming, namely: 1. Methods employed on a mass scale in the field of artificial insemination, synchronization of estrus with replacement pigs, diagnosis of early pregnancy along with hormonal methods for the stimulation of conception and prolificacy of sows. 2. Methods of model implementation -- programmed farrowing with the use of prostaglandin F2 alpha, hormonal protection of embryogenesis along with apparatus methods determining the most appropriate time of insemination. 3. Methods in the phase of scientific development -- insemination with deep-frozen semen, implantation of fertilized zygotes, programming of ovulation, and others. Established were organizational and administrative advantages and the veterinary and zootechnical of these methods.

Histological studies were conducted into the uteri and macroscopic studies into the ovaries of 64 gilts, aged between 180 and 220 days, following administration of 400 I.U. of pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) with 200 I.U. of human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) or 500 I.U. of PMSG with 250 I.U. of hCG, in order to test the action of one single injection of PMSG and hCG on the reproductive organs of prepuberal gilts. Ovulation was achieved in something between 75 and 100 per cent of all test animals which were treated in four experimental groups. The mean ovulation rates, following injection of 500 I.U. of PMSG with 250 I.U. of hCG, were between 17.2 and 28.6 (superovulation). The changes induced to the uterus by gonadotrophin injection were similar to those resulting from spontaneous onset of puberty, with the effectiveness of 500 I.U. of PMSG with 250 I.U. of hCG having been stronger than that of 400 I.U. of PMSG with 200 I.U. of hCG. However, histometric examinations have shown that uterus developed with induced cycle was not fully identical with uterus development with spontaneous onset of sexual maturity. Only in about 30 per cent of all animals tested was an induced cycle spontaneously followed by another cycle. Uterus growth was stimulated by gonadotrophin injection even in animals with no further cyclic activity.

Included in experiments with 185 sows with synchronised oestrus and ovulation were 52 untreated animals (K), while the others received intramuscular injections of daily doses of 75 mg of dexamethasone (DXMS), between the 109th and 111th days of pregnancy (V1) or 200 mg on the 110th day (V2) or on the 111th day (V3). While DXMS failed to have any substantive effect on mean pregnancy time or duration of labour, the variance of farrowing dates was reduced with significance. The average intervals which passed from the injections to delivery were 58.8 hours (V1), 82.2 hours (V2) or 54.8 hours (V3). No major difference was found to exist between K, V1, V2, and V3 regarding stillbirths or piglets with underweight, weights at birth and on the 21st day of age, loss in the course of raising, and percentual frequency of sows with normal or increased rectal temperature during the first three days after farrowing.
Mature female cats of known reproductive history were randomly divided into groups for natural breeding or mating following hormonal induction of estrus. Treatment with a single injection of 100 international units of pregnant mares' serum followed in 7 days by 50 international units of human chorionic gonadotropin produced results comparable to natural breeding. Daily injections of pregnant mares' serum (300-500 international units total) resulted in fewer successful pregnancies and adversely affected the ability of kittens to survive to weaning.

The response of the ovine corpus luteum of pregnancy to the luteolytic effect of prostaglandin F2 alpha (dinoprost) and its analogue, cloprostenol, was tested in both superovulated and untreated ewes by monitoring plasma progesterone concentrations at the time of 'material recognition' and beyond (days 13 to 30). On days 13, 16 and 28, the majority of the superovulated ewes were refractory to 10 mg of dinoprost. The luteolytic efficacy of 250 micrograms of cloprostenol was compared with 10 mg of dinoprost on day 20 of pregnancy in superovulated and untreated animals and the two prostaglandins were also compared on days 26 and 30 in animals previously unresponsive to dinoprost. Generally, cloprostenol was more effective than dinoprost because there was less refractoriness on day 20 and no refractoriness on days 26 and 30 to this prostaglandin. No difference in the sensitivity to this drug was found between the superovulated and untreated groups on days 20 and 26.
