Establishing norms in an oncological service setting and of medico-technological standards for delivering oncological care to the population of Ukraine presupposes a uniform notion-terminological apparatus to be devised. The article presents current interpretation of the meaning of most widely used, leading traditional and newly coined terms and notions common in practical oncology, that subdivision of its dealing with prophylaxis and diagnosis of malignant tumors, for broad sections of medical workers who were not specially trained in the field.

CONTEXT: Recently approved drugs may be more likely to have unrecognized adverse drug reactions (ADRs) than established drugs, but no recent studies have examined how frequently postmarketing surveillance identifies important ADRs. OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency and timing of discovery of new ADRs described in black box warnings or necessitating withdrawal of the drug from the market. DESIGN AND SETTING: Examination of the Physicians' Desk Reference for all new chemical entities approved by the US Food and Drug Administration between 1975 and 1999, and all drugs withdrawn from the market between 1975 and 2000 (with or without a prior black box warning). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Frequency of and time to a new black box warning or drug withdrawal. RESULTS: A total of 548 new chemical entities were approved in 1975-1999; 56 (10.2%) acquired a new black box warning or were withdrawn. Forty-five drugs (8.2%) acquired 1 or more black box warnings and 16 (2.9%) were withdrawn from the market. In Kaplan-Meier analyses, the estimated probability of acquiring a new black box warning or being withdrawn from the market over 25 years was 20%. Eighty-one major changes to drug labeling in the Physicians' Desk Reference occurred including the addition of 1 or more black box warnings per drug, or drug withdrawal. In Kaplan-Meier analyses, half of these changes occurred within 7 years of drug introduction; half of the withdrawals occurred within 2 years. CONCLUSIONS: Serious ADRs commonly emerge after Food and Drug Administration approval. The safety of new agents cannot be known with certainty until a drug has been on the market for many years.

Etiocholanedione (ED), a natural metabolite of dehydroepiandrosterone, has antiobesity effects in animals when given orally and is nontoxic. We carried out a trial of oral ED in obese humans. In a 20-week randomized double-blind crossover study, 14 subjects lost significantly more weight and body fat during treatment with oral ED, 4 gm daily, than during placebo administration. Mean weight loss during ED administration was 2.8 +/- 5.5 kilograms, which was equivalent to 0.53 +/- 0.91 kilograms per week per 100 kilograms of body fat; mean weight change during placebo administration was essentially zero: +0.21 +/- 4.2 kg, or +0.04 +/- 0.74 kg/wk/100 kg body fat. The difference between the weight changes in the two periods was significant: for delta kg, P < 0.05; for delta kg/wk/100 kg body fat, P < 0.03. Densitometric measurement of body fat content showed that the mean weight loss coincided almost exactly with the mean decrease in fat content; thus, over the 10-week period of ED administration, the mean fat loss was about 5% of the initial body fat content. Three of the obese subjects had strikingly greater fat loss, about 18%, 19%, and 25% of the initial body fat content. There were no significant subjective or objective side effects of ED administration.
An annotated list of some notions and units used in radioepidemiology is presented, with special emphasis on differentiating between the realms of radiation physics, radiation biology, radioepidemiology and radiation protection.

The management of dysphagia is the largest recognized subspecialty in the field of speech-language pathology. Practicing speech-language pathologists require a comprehensive theoretical and functional knowledge base to underpin the safe and effective management of people with dysphagia. Students need to develop an understanding of the normal integrated swallow and how it can be affected to appreciate the assessment or treatment of dysphagia. Although students are well motivated to learn this material, assimilating knowledge of the dynamic nature of the swallow has typically been problematic because of its complex character. The limitations of currently available teaching resources have been addressed by the production of an interactive multimedia program that includes integrated presentation of text, graphics, voice-overs, and video and animation sequences to highlight various aspects of the swallowing process. Students can selectively manipulate parts of this process to understand the normal swallow and to simulate different aspects of dysfunction and the consequent effects on swallow safety and efficiency. Feedback from students, faculty, and experts has demonstrated that The Dynamic Swallow would be a valued tool in the teaching of dysphagia.
Nonlinear dynamics is an exciting new way of looking at peculiarities that in the past have been ignored or explained away. We have attempted to give a general introduction to the basics of the mathematics, applications to cardiology, and a brief review of the new tools needed to use the concepts of nonlinear mathematics. The careful mathematical approach to problems in cardiac electrical dynamics and blood flow is opening a window on behaviors and mechanisms previously inaccessible.
