[Possible states of the photosystem II reaction centerand thermoluminescence of higher plants. II. Application of the theory to experimental data analysis. Relation of thermoluminescence peaks to initial states of reaction center and excitation conditions].

Initial conditions for the thermoluminescence theory described in the first part of the present work were determined. The initial populations of possible states of the photosystem II reaction center and thermoluminescence of higher plants for different excitation conditions were estimated. The estimation enables one to explain the known experimental conditions favoring the appearance of certain thermoluminescence peaks. The possibility of applying the theory to the deconvolution of experimental curves into components was shown.

[Functional state of the human adrenals according to morphological analysis data and some remarks on the method of studying them].

When studying the morphology of the adrenals sufficiently exact criteria for their evaluation are necessary. Some of them may be obtained from complex macro- and microscopical investigations with the use of biometry and mathematical statistics. The work analyzes macroscopical (weight, volume, specific gravity) and microscopical (qualitative -- plethora, content of lipids, foci of cytolysis, mosaity etc. and quantitative -- absolute and relative dimensions of zones, cyto- and karyometry, interrelationship of zones, their relationship with KNP as a whole) data. On their grounds the estimation of the functional state of the adrenal cortex is made depending on the mechanism and causes of death as well as on duration of the disease.

[Data analysis on epidemiologic survey of cataract in China].

OBJECTIVE: To approach the prevalence of age-related cataract and its relationships with the condition of examination, diagnostic criteria and geographical environment in various areas. METHODS: According to the WHO's criteria of blindness and low vision, a statistical analysis of a national sample survey of blindness and low vision was carried out over the country. RESULTS: The number of patients with age-related cataract and visual acuity < 0.3 in both eyes calculated in the whole population was more than 5 million, the prevalence being 0.46%. The prevalence of blindness and that of low vision were 0.43% and 0.58% respectively. Among the blind, 41.06% was caused by cataract, and the low vision caused by cataract was 49.38%. Among elderly of >or= 60 years, the proportion of the blind and low vision caused by cataract was 73.13%. When the cataract standard was defined as lens opacity with visual acuity < 0.7, the prevalence of cataract was 5.99% in Beijing sample survey at the suburb area. The incidence of age-related cataract in females was significantly higher than that in males. In a survey of Beijing suburb in 1997, the prevalence of cataract among 5,084 elderly people of >or= 50 years with bilateral corrected visual acuity < 0.1 was 2.22%. In the southern part of China, the area of low latitude, especially in the plateau, such as in Guangdong Province (0.69%) and in Tibet (1.04%), the prevalence of cataract is much higher than that in northern part, high latitude areas, such as Heilongjiang Province (0.26%). A comparative study of the cataract prevalence of elderly >or= 40 years in the areas of different levels above the sea and sunshine times, it shows that the higher level above the sea and longer sunshine time the higher cataract prevalence. CONCLUSIONS: A longer sunshine time and a larger amount of ultraviolet irradiation are considered as the risk factors of cataract. Age-related cataract is the leading cause of blindness and the low vision in China.

A system architecture for genomic data analysis.

MOTIVATION: Most of diseases are caused by a set of gene defects, which occur in a complex association. The association scheme of expressed genes can be modelled by genetic networks. Genetic networks are efficiently facilities to understand the dynamic of pathogenic processes by modelling molecular reality of cell conditions. In this sense a genetic network consists of first, a set of genes of specified cells, tissues or species and second, causal relations between these genes determining the functional condition of the biological system, i. e. under disease. A relation between two genes will exist if they both are directly or indirectly associated with disease [8]. Our goal is to characterize diseases (especially autoimmune diseases like chronic pancreatitis CP, multiple sclerosis MS, rheumatoid arthritis RA) by genetic networks generated by a computer system. We want to introduce this practice as a bioinformatic approach for finding targets.

New techniques for three-dimensional data analysis in histopathology.

This paper describes two three-dimensional (3D) analytical techniques based on 3D mathematical morphology that have been found useful in quantifying the 3D spatial distribution of S-phase cells in a tubular tumor of the human breast. One technique is based on determining the normalized radial distribution of the S-phase cells with respect to the central axis of the tumor. The other technique is a novel extension of the polyhedra of Voronoi to quantify the distribution. The Voronoi polyhedron of a given S-phase cell nucleus is that polyhedron of minimal volume defined by planes all of which are perpendicular bisectors of the vectors extending from the given cell to all other S-phase cells in the tumor. Methods are demonstrated for generating these polyhedra and for histogramming their volumes. An illustration is given of using the histogram to sort the S-phase cells according to their 3D positional relationships. Displays showing the sorted cells in 3D and their associated Voronoi polyhedra are provided.
