[Diagnostic feasibility of gastric pH measurement during the observation of children with gastrointestinal diseases suffered from Chernobyl accident].

Differential treatment of inflammatory and functional conditions of gastroenterological tract organs is one of the main issues of current gastroenterology. Last observation has shown that the number of patients with gastroduodenal and hepatobiliary system diseases keeps growing. It is conditioned by many social and economical causes to be managed with new approaches in their diagnostics. The main objective of the work is an effective use of gastroenterological pH-metric measurement to assess the staged treatment of children with functional and organic gastroenterological conditions with the use of morshinsk mineral water mineralized from 3.0-7.0 to 14 g/L.

[20-year morpholoogical findings in the study of medical aftereffects of the Chernobyl accident].

Presented are the results of morphological studies of radiation sickness, congenital malformations and malignant tumors which have developed in Chemobyl victims. Until now consequences of the accident remain a subject of practical and research medicine. Scope of relevant topical problems the pathologists will have to investigate in the future is discussed.

[Impairment of space-frequency parameters of EEG coherence during cognitive performance (consequences of Chernobyl accident)].

Changes in frequency and space parameters of the EEG coherence evoked by cognitive performance were analyzed in 13 healthy subjects and participants of the Chemobyl clean-up. In healthy subjects, the EEG coherences in the alpha and beta frequency bands were significantly increased during arithmetic count and during visuospatial performance. Each test was characterized by regionally-specific features. Chemobyl patients demonstrated a global decrease in the EEG coherence predominantly in the alpha and beta frequency bands, especially in the frontal cortical areas. Patients with various pathological EEG patterns demonstrated specific impairment of EEG parameters. In patients with a "flat" EEG pattern, the EEG coherence predominantly decreased in the frontal associative areas, especially during arithmetic calculation. In patients with a "hypersynchronous" EEG pattern, the decrease in the EEG coherence was most pronounced in the parietal associative areas, especially during the visuospatial performance. The revealed impairments of the EEG coherence reactivity may be a reflection of disorders of the intracortical and corticosubcortical interaction and can result from the remote postradiation brain atrophy, especially, of cortical structures.

[Neuropsychologic analysis of memory peculiarities in patients exposed to ionizing radiation as a result of the Chernobyl accident].

A sharp decrease in the ability to remember a number of random words was revealed in the main group in comparison with the control one. The interference tests showed significant abnormality. Word recall is much lower in main group than in the control group. Decrease in short-term and long-term visual memory was not displayed. The investigation has shown the presence of symptoms of the affected left temporal area in the form of acoustic-mnestic aphasia elements, signs of control disorder of higher nervous regulation, mnestic activity programming derangement, increase in the impediment to word traces under interference in terms of dynamic components disorders of psychic activity. The paper shows that patients exposed to ionizing radiation have memory disturbances as the result of the forebrain structures such as the cortex of left temporal and front areas with their corticosubcortical connections being damaged. It is they that play the key role in processing and reproducing verbal information.

[Health state and physical development of children prenatally exposed to radiation as a result of Chernobyl accident].

1144 children which had been exposed to radiation at the stage of their intrauterine life have been observed. Assessment of their health state and physical development has been carried out. Radiation doses load on thyroid gland of fetuses varied from 0.01 till 3.34 Gr, whole-body irradiation doses varied from 10.0 till 376.0 mZb. The level of health state of children exposed during their intrauterine life to radiation was lower at all stages of postnatal ontogenesis than that one of children of the control group. A presence of a definite correlation ratio between whole-body irradiation doses of fetuses and development of chronical somatic pathology in children was established during the study. It was noted that frequency of abnormalities of physical development and chronical somathic pathology increased after a thyroid gland of the fetuses had been exposed to radiation dosed from 0.36 to 0.75 Gr.

[Multidrug resistance determinants in acute myeloid leukemia developed in persons exposed to ionizing radiation due to the Chernobyl accident].

The results of multidrug resistance determinants expression analysis on leukemic cells of 56 acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients by immunophenotyping are presented. Of these, there were 21 persons exposed to ionizing radiation due to the Chemobyl accident with radiation-associated AML and 35 patients with spontaneous leukemia. The aim of this study was to determine if transport proteins (P-glycoprotein, LRP, and MDR1), apoptosis-related proteins (Fas, Bcl-2, Bax, p53, and Bcl-X(L)), and topoisomerase IIalpha expression in AML patients with the history of radiation exposure differed from those in spontaneous AML cases. Leukemic cells in patients with radiation-associated diseases compared to spontaneous AML more often overexpressed antiapoptotic oncoprotein Bcl-2 (12/21 vs. 6/35, p < 0.005) and less often demonstrated expression of Fas receptor (12/21 vs. 30/35, p < 0.05). Moreover, leukemic cells were simultaneously Fas negative and Bcl-2 positive in 4 out of 21 patients exposed to ionizing radiation but none of spontaneous cases had similar phenotype (p < 0.05). Leukemic cells in patients with radiation-associated AML compared to spontaneous cases more often were P-glycoprotein positive (12/20 vs 9/31, p < 0.05). P-glycoprotein overexpression significantly correlated with resistant disease in patients with radiation-associated AML (r = 0.47, p < 0.05), but was not a prognostic variable for the treatment outcome in terms of overall survival. Defects in pathways of drug-induced apoptosis and function of pump, that actively effluxes drugs could contribute significantly to developing drug resistance in radiation-associated AML.
