Modulational instability criteria for coupled nonlinear transmission lines with dispersive elements.

We investigate the modulational instability of Stokes wave solutions on a system of coupled nonlinear electrical transmission lines with dispersive elements. In the continuum limit, and in suitable scaled coordinates, the voltage on the system is described by the two-dimensional coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. The set of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations obtained is analyzed via a perturbation approach. No assumption is made on the signs of the relevant coefficients such as the coefficients of nonlinearity and the coupling coefficients. A set of explicit criteria of modulational stability and modulational instability is derived and analyzed. It is numerically shown that the effect of the dispersive elements in the line is to decrease the instability region and the instability growth rate.

Finite wavelength instabilities in a slow mode coupled complex ginzburg-landau equation

In this Letter, we discuss the effect of slow real modes in reaction-diffusion systems close to a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. The spatiotemporal effects of the slow mode cannot be captured by traditional descriptions in terms of a single complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE). We show that the slow mode coupling to the CGLE introduces a novel set of finite wavelength instabilities not present in the CGLE. For spiral waves, these instabilities highly affect the location of regions for convective and absolute instability. These new instability boundaries are consistent with transitions to spatiotemporal chaos found by simulation of the corresponding coupled amplitude equations.

Head-tail instability caused by electron clouds in positron storage rings

In positron or proton storage rings with many closely spaced bunches, an electron cloud can build up in the vacuum chamber due to photoemission or secondary emission. We discuss the possibility of a single-bunch two-stream instability driven by this electron cloud. Depending on the strength of the beam-electron interaction, the chromaticity and the synchrotron oscillation frequency, this instability either resembles a linac beam breakup or a head-tail instability. We present computer simulations of the instabilities, and compare the simulation results with analytical estimates.

Instabilities in diamond under high shear stress

We investigate, through first-principles calculations, lattice instabilities induced in diamond by the application of high shear stresses. For shear stresses as low as 95 GPa a lattice instability will occur, leading to graphitelike layered structures. This effect is highly anisotropic. The reversal of the direction of the applied shear forces may cause a change of 80 GPa in the shear stress value at which the instability develops. The same reversal also causes different bonds to be broken, resulting in a drastic change in the orientation of the resulting graphitelike structures. We also find that an additional compressive stress of 50 GPa along the (111) direction does not eliminate the shear-induced instability.

Instability and equilibration of centrifugally stable stratified Taylor-Couette flow.

The flow between two concentric cylinders, V(r), is studied analytically and computationally for a fluid with stable axial density stratification. A sufficient condition for linear, inviscid instability is d(V/r)(2)/dr<0 (i.e., all anticyclonically sheared flows) rather than the Rayleigh condition for centrifugal instability, d(Vr)(2)/dr<0. This implies a far wider range of instability than previously identified. The instability persists with finite viscosity and nonlinearity, leading to chaos and fully developed turbulence through a sequence of bifurcations. Laboratory tests are feasible and desirable.

Mechanical instability and ideal shear strength of transition metal carbides and nitrides.

The ideal shear strength of transition metal carbides and nitrides is calculated with the use of the ab initio pseudopotential density functional method. The microscopic mechanism that limits the ideal strength is studied using full atomic and structural relaxation and the results of electronic structure calculations. It is shown that plasticity in perfect crystals can be triggered by electronic instabilities at finite strains. Our study explicitly demonstrates that the ideal strength in these materials is limited by the elastic instability which is in turn initiated by electronic instabilities. The potential application of alloy hardening due to the onset of instabilities at different strains is also discussed.

Rapid large-scale magnetic-field dissipation in a collisionless current sheet via coupling between Kelvin-Helmholtz and lower-hybrid drift instabilities.

Rapid large-scale magnetic-field dissipation is observed in a full kinetic simulation of cross-field current instabilities in a current sheet even when the thickness of the current sheet is at ion scale. The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability caused by the velocity shear between the current-carrying ions and the cold background ions excites the lower-hybrid drift instability at the edges of the undulated current sheet. We show that the nonlinear coupling between these two instabilities is responsible for the observed rapid dissipation. The simulation result presents a new route for magnetic-field dissipation in an ion-scale current sheet and demonstrates the general significance of nonlinear cross-scale coupling in collisionless plasmas.

Auto-optimization of dewetting rates by rim instabilities in slipping polymer films.

We investigated the instability of the moving rim in dewetting of slipping polymer films. Small fluctuations of the width of the rim get spontaneously amplified since narrower sections of the rim move faster than wider ones due to frictional forces being proportional to the width of the rim. Instability leads eventually to an autocontrol of the rim width by the continuous formation of droplets with a mean size proportional to the initial film thickness. Surprisingly, the mean dewetting velocity at late stages, averaged over the length of the rim, was found to be constant. Thus, the instability of the rim enabled a more efficient, i.e., faster, "drying" of the substrate. Nonslipping films did not show this instability.

Pattern-dislocation-type dynamical instability in 1D optical feedback Kerr media with Gaussian transverse pumping.

We study experimentally and numerically the secondary instability corresponding to the destabilization of stationary transverse roll patterns appearing in a 1D liquid crystal layer subjected to optical feedback. This dynamical instability appears as roll dislocations in the spatiotemporal diagrams. We show that it originates from the Gaussian spatial transverse dependence of a control parameter and that its corresponding mechanism is the selection of a local unstable wave number. This instability is the optical counterpart of the ramp-induced Eckhaus instability observed in hydrodynamics.

Path instability of a rising bubble.

We model the problem of path instability of a rising bubble by considering the bubble as a spheroidal body of fixed shape, and we solve numerically the coupled fluid-body problem. Numerical results show that this model exhibits path instability for large enough values of the control parameters. The corresponding characteristics of the zigzag and spiral paths are in good agreement with experimental observations. Analysis of the vorticity field behind the bubble reveals that a wake instability leading to a double threaded wake is the primary cause of the path instability.

Laser-induced hydrodynamic instability of fluid interfaces.

We report on a new class of electromagnetically driven fluid interface instability. Using the optical radiation pressure of a cw laser to bend a very soft near-critical liquid-liquid interface, we show that it becomes unstable for sufficiently large beam power P, leading to the formation of a stationary beam-centered liquid microjet. We explore the behavior of the instability onset by tuning the interface softness with temperature and varying the size of the exciting beam. The instability mechanism is experimentally demonstrated. It simply relies on total reflection of light at the deformed interface whose condition provides the universal scaling relation for the onset P(S) of the instability.

Attractive instability of oppositely charged membranes induced by charge density fluctuations.

We predict the conditions under which two oppositely charged membranes show a dynamic, attractive instability. Two layers with unequal charges of opposite sign can repel or be stable when in close proximity. However, dynamic charge density fluctuations can induce an attractive instability and thus facilitate fusion. We predict the dominant instability modes and time scales and show how these are controlled by the relative charge and membrane viscosities. These dynamic instabilities may be the precursors of membrane fusion in systems where artificial vesicles are engulfed by biological cells of opposite charge.

Parametric instabilities and their control in advanced interferometer gravitational-wave detectors.

A detailed simulation of Advanced LIGO test mass optical cavities shows that parametric instabilities will excite 7 acoustic modes in each fused silica test mass, with parametric gain R up to 7 and only 1 acoustic mode with R approximately 2 for alternative sapphire test masses. Fine-tuning of the test mass radii of curvature causes the instabilities to sweep through various modes with R as high as approximately 2000. Sapphire test mass cavities can be tuned to completely eliminate instabilities using thermal g-factor tuning. In the case of fused silica test mass, instabilities can be minimized but not eliminated.

Shear instabilities in granular mixtures.

Dynamical instabilities in fluid mechanics are responsible for a variety of important common phenomena, such as waves on the sea surface or Taylor vortices in Couette flow. In granular media dynamical instabilities have just begun to be discovered. Here we show by means of molecular dynamics simulation the existence of a new dynamical instability of a granular mixture under oscillating horizontal shear, which leads to the formation of a striped pattern where the components are segregated. We investigate the properties of such a Kelvin-Helmholtz-like instability and show how it is connected to pattern formation in granular flow and segregation.

Differential growth and instability in elastic shells.

Differential growth in elastic materials can produce stress either through incompatibility of growth or by interaction with the surrounding medium. In many situations, this stress can be sufficient to induce shape instability in the growing medium. To gain better insight in growth-induced instabilities, the growth of an elastic shell loaded with hydrostatic pressure or embedded in an elastic medium is studied. The residual stress arising from the incompatibility of growth and the contact stress arising from the interaction with the surrounding medium are computed with respect to growth and geometric parameters and critical values for instability are obtained. Depending on these parameters, different modes of instability can be obtained.

Nature of the intrinsic relation between Bloch-band tunneling and modulational instability.

In an example of Bose-Einstein condensates embedded in two-dimensional optical lattices, we show that in nonlinear periodic systems modulational instability and interband tunneling are intrinsically related phenomena. By direct numerical simulations we find that tunneling results in attenuation or enhancement of instability. On the other hand, instability results in asymmetric nonlinear tunneling. The effect strongly depends on the band gap structure and it is especially significant in the case of the resonant tunneling. The symmetry of the coherent structures emerging from the instability reflects the symmetry of both the stable and the unstable states between which the tunneling occurs. Our results provide evidence of the profound effect of the band structure on the superfluid-insulator transition.

Microsatellite instability in young patients with colorectal cancer.

Genetic instability is closely correlated to the pathogenesis of hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer (HNPCC), which is clinically characterized by a family history and early onset. To investigate the role of genetic instability in young patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), 22 CRC patients, who were aged younger than 30 at the time of diagnosis, were studied. Patients with familial adenomatous polyposis were excluded. Among the 22 cases, seven were identified as microsatellite instability positive (MI+), and more than five microsatellite markers among the 15 tested markers showed an additional band pattern in the tumor tissue. None of the remaining 15 cases showed instability in any microsatellite marker. Two of seven MI+ cases were classic HNPCC. While all MI+ cases had one or no metastatic lymph node, 53.3% of MI- cases showed metastasis in two or more regional lymph nodes. Allelic deletion of the 17p12-13 chromosome around the p53 locus occurred in 16.7% of MI+ cases, and 80.0% of MI- cases showed loss of heterozygosity at that locus. hMSH2 Protein expression, assessed by immunohistochemistry, was absent in two cases, both of which were MI+. When we tested two to four sites of MI+ tumors, transforming growth factor beta receptor type II was mutated in a homogeneous pattern in five MI+ cases. In addition, frame-shift mutations of BAX, insulin-like growth factor II receptor, hMSH3 and hMSH6 were found in three cases, five cases, five cases and one case, respectively. In contrast to the consistent mutation of the transforming growth factor-beta receptor type II gene, mutations of other genes varied in different portions of the tumors.

Acupuncture in the treatment of bladder instability.

Twenty patients with lower urinary tract symptoms attributable to bladder instability or sensory urgency were treated with traditional Chinese acupuncture; 77% of patients with idiopathic detrusor instability were symptomatically cured. Urodynamic assessment after treatment showed no consistent changes and instability was abolished in only 1 patient. Bladder capacity rose in those who responded. Acupuncture is safe and free of complications and side effects. In patients with diurnal symptoms associated with idiopathic bladder instability it offers a therapy as effective as other non-invasive treatments.
