Film formation of Ag nanoparticles at the organic-aqueous liquid interface.

We report a wet-chemical method to make films by spontaneous assembly of passivated Ag nanoparticles at the organic-aqueous liquid interface. The interfacial films exhibit a blue opalescence and are characterized with transmission electron microscopy and UV-vis spectrophotometry. Measurements indicate that nanoparticles in the interfacial film can form superlattices and in some cases nanostructures.

Photochemically controlled electrochemical deposition and dissolution of Ag0 nanoclusters on au electrode surfaces.

A photoisomerizable thiolated nitrospiropyran SP, (1a), monolayer is assembled on a Au electrode by the primary deposition of thiolated nitromerocyanine isomer 1b as a monolayer on the electrode, followed by the irradiation of the surface with visible light, lambda > 475 nm. The surface coverage of nitrospiropyran units (1a) on the electrode is 2 x 10-10 mole cm-2. Irradiation of the electrode with UV light, 320 nm < lambda < 360 nm, results in the nitromerocyanine, MR, monolayer on the electrode that binds Ag+ ions to the phenolate units. The Ag+ ions associated with the MR monolayer undergo cyclic reduction to surface-confined Ag0 nanoclusters, and reoxidation and dissolution of the Ag0 nanoclusters to Ag+ ions associated with the monolayer are demonstrated. The electron-transfer rate constants for the reduction of Ag+ to Ag0 and for the dissolution of Ag0 were determined by chronoamperometry and correspond to ketred = 12.7 s-1 and ketox = 10.5 s-1, respectively. The nanoclustering rate was characterized by surface plasmon resonance measurements, and it proceeds on a time scale of 10 min. The size of the Ag0 nanoclusters is in the range of 2 to 20 nm. The electrochemically induced reduction of the MR-Ag+ monolayer to the MR-Ag0 surface and the reoxidation of the MR-Ag0 surface control the hydrophilic-hydrophobic properties of the surface. The advancing contact angle of the MR-Ag0-functionalized surface is 59 degrees , and the contact angle of the MR-Ag+-monolayer-functionalized surface is 74 degrees . Photoisomerization of the Ag0-MR surface to the Ag0-SP state, followed by the oxidation of the Ag0 nanoclusters, results in the dissolution of the Ag+ ions into the electrolyte solution.

Two-level antibacterial coating with both release-killing and contact-killing capabilities.

Using a combination of an aqueous layer-by-layer deposition technique, nanoparticle surface modification chemistry, and nanoreactor chemistry, we constructed thin film coatings with two distinct layered functional regions: a reservoir for the loading and release of bactericidal chemicals and a nanoparticle surface cap with immobilized bactericides. This results in dual-functional bactericidal coatings bearing both chemical-releasing bacteria-killing capacity and contact bacteria-killing capacity. These dual-functional coatings showed very high initial bacteria-killing efficiency due to the release of Ag ions and retained significant antibacterial activity after the depletion of embedded Ag because of the immobilized quaternary ammonium salts.

A prototype prophylactic anti-influenza preparation in aerosol form on the basis of Abies sibirica polyprenols.

This research investigates a promising antiviral compound based on polyprenols from Siberian silver fir (Abies sibirica). The physico-chemical characteristics of a preparation developed in aerosol form and an estimation of its protective efficacy against aerosol challenge of laboratory animals are presented. It is shown that (1) by using a simple ultrasonic disperser one can obtain aerosol of three formulations studied with about 70% of its mass accumulated in the size range below 1.8 microm; (2) 40-100% of aerosol particles contain preparation for different formulations; (3) after delivering under specified schedules, the preparations as developed can protect up to 100% of mice against 5 LD(50) of influenza A/Aichi/2/68 (H3N2) virus aerosol infection. Animals inhaled twice the preparation doses (which were 100 times lower than injection ones of the same efficacy) and did not exceed 10 microg/mouse. It was shown that the mode of action of this immunomodulating preparation was nonspecific stimulation of immune cells' various activities.

Studies in burns: XIV, Heling in burn wounds treated with Ethyl Linoleate alone or in combination with selected topical antibacterial agents.

Studies of the efficacy, in terms of burned wound healing, of a mixture of Ethyl Linoleate (ethyl 9-12 (cis, cis) octadecadienoate) with alpha-1-histidine, alpha-tocopherol, and TBHQ (hELate) was undertaken in 12 swine. The species was selected so as to study an animal with skin anatomy similar to the human. Statistically significantly greater healing occurred in 730 C/7sec contact burns (20% BSA) treated with hELate than in untreated burns in pigs. Further, there was no contracture noted in the hELate treated lesions, while marked contracture occurred in the untreated burns. Additionally, we noted that there was a proportional increase in weight gain amongst swine studied as their burn lesions epithelialized. In order to evaluate the compatibility of hELate with selected, currently-used topical antibacterial agents, 154 rabbits with 20% 730 C/7 sec contact burns were studied. The lipid was applied (0.01 ml/cm2 burn) at 1 hour postburning; the topical agent was applied at 2 hours post-burn and every 24-hours. All animals were washed once daily. hELate was applied only once. We found no statistical difference in the number of subjects healed or in the mortality between animals treated with hELate alone and those treated with the agent plus Gentamycin cream, Neosporin cream, and silver sulfadiazine 1% in Unibase USP (compounded at Medical College of Georgia specifically and only for this study.) We suggest that Ethyl Linoleate agent (hELate) may be used safely in combination with selected antibacterial substances. Further, these selected combinations seem to be non-toxic and appear to allow the calorie-saving and healing effects of the lipid to proceed unimpeded.

Alpha pulse height distributions with ZnS(Ag) scintillator.

A flask coated with ZnS(Ag) scintillator is one of the most accurate detectors available for measuring 222Rn. To maintain this accuracy, the counting system consisting of a photomultiplier tube and associated electronics must be checked on a regular basis. A combination of an alpha source and a ZnS(Ag) scintillator is commonly used for these purposes. This paper compares the pulse height distributions of 4 alpha sources with the pulse height distribution from a 100 cm3 scintillation flask containing 222Rn. The source that most closely reproduced the distribution from an actual 222Rn sample in a 100 cm3 scintillation flask consisted of a sealed flask, of the same type, which contains a small piece of uranium-ore.

Pathogenesis-related proteins and polyamines in a developmental mutant of tomato, epinastic.

The polyamine level and the accumulation of pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins were studied in the ethylene overproducing Epinastic (Epi) tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) mutant, as compared with its parent, cv VFN8. Neither a decreased putrescine level nor an enhanced production of PR proteins were detected in Epi, contrary to what could be expected from our previous studies (JM Bellés, J Carbonell, V Conejero [1991] Plant Physiol 96: 1053-1059). However, treatment with the ethylene-releasing compound 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (ethephon) or silver nitrate at high doses induced a decrease in putrescine content and an enhancing of the synthesis of PR proteins in Epi as ascertained by immunoblot analysis using antisera raised against Rutgers tomato PR proteins.

Mercury resistance in a plasmid-bearing strain of Escherichia coli.

A strain of Escherichia coli carrying genes determining mercury resistance on a naturally occurring resistance transfer factor (RTF) converts 95% of 10(-5)m Hg(2+) (chloride) to metallic mercury at a rate of 4 to 5 nmoles of Hg(2+) per min per 10(8) cells. The metallic mercury is rapidly eliminated from the culture medium as mercury vapor. The volatilizing activity has a temperature dependence and heat sensitivity characteristic of enzymatic catalysis and is inducible by mercuric chloride. Ag(+) and Au(3+) are markedly inhibitory of mercury volatilization.

Artifact-free coronary magnetic resonance angiography and coronary vessel wall imaging in the presence of a new, metallic, coronary magnetic resonance imaging stent.

BACKGROUND: Coronary in-stent restenosis cannot be directly assessed by magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) because of the local signal void of currently used stainless steel stents. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of a new, dedicated, coronary MR imaging (MRI) stent for artifact-free, coronary MRA and in-stent lumen and vessel wall visualization. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifteen prototype stents were deployed in coronary arteries of 15 healthy swine and investigated with a double-oblique, navigator-gated, free-breathing, T2-prepared, 3D cartesian gradient-echo sequence; a T2-prepared, 3D spiral gradient-echo sequence; and a T2-prepared, 3D steady-state, free-precession coronary MRA sequence. Furthermore, black-blood vessel wall imaging by a dual-inversion-recovery, turbo spin-echo sequence was performed. Artifacts of the stented vessel segment and signal intensities of the coronary vessel lumen inside and outside the stent were assessed. With all investigated sequences, the vessel lumen and wall could be visualized without artifacts, including the stented vessel segment. No signal intensity alterations inside the stent when compared with the vessel lumen outside the stent were found. CONCLUSIONS: The new, coronary MRI stent allows for completely artifact-free coronary MRA and vessel wall imaging.

Indirect spectrophotometric determination of thiamine in pharmaceutical preparations.

An indirect, sensitive spectrophotometric method for the assay of thiamine is described. The procedure is based on the formation of a mercaptide by thiamine, with a known excess of silver ions in a buffered medium of pH 9.0 +/- 0.1. The unreacted silver ions are determined by the formation of an ion-pair complex with 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,4,5,7-tetrabromofluorescein, which shows an absorption maximum at 550 nm. The absorbance is found to decrease linearly with increasing concentrations of thiamine, which is corroborated by the calculated correlation coefficient value of -0.998. The system obeys Beer's law for 0-25 micrograms of thiamine in an overall aqueous volume of 10 ml. The molar absorptivity and relative standard deviation (RSD) were calculated to be 7.8 x 10(4) l mol-1 cm-1 and 2.5% (n = 10), respectively. The proposed method was applied successfully to the determination of thiamine in pharmaceutical preparations. The reliability of the assay was established by parallel determination by the standard thiochrome method and recovery studies.

Dentinal sensation and hypersensitivity. A review of mechanisms and treatment alternatives.

Dentinal hypersensitivity has long been a dilemma of both dentists and patients. With teeth being maintained longer, there has been an increased demand placed upon the dentist to manage the sensitivity of cervically exposed dentin. There has been much written on this subject. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current concepts thought to be responsible in dentinal sensation, and to review and critique the various treatment modalities for dentinal hypersensitivity.
