[A pattern analysis of stress-strain curves for Ag alloys. (Part 1) On stress-strain curves for Ag-Cu alloys (author's transl)].

Mechanical properties of the dental metals have been estimated from the value of tensile strength, yield point, elastic limit, elongation and so on. But when applying these values to practical dental problems, they are often find to be not available enough. And recently the electoronic computer has been developed and widyly used in various fields, so the author tried to analyze true stress-true strain curves for alloys as pattern by the computer. The flow curves in the region of uniform plastic deformation was expressed by the Hollomon model, sigma=FepsilonN, and in this paper, Ag-Cu alloys were studied in various contents and heat treatments. Results obtained are as follows [1] Theoretically, the equations should hold between experimental values--epsilonT, ST and calculated values --N, F(F/e)N, that is epsilonT=N, and ST=F(N/e)N. In the case of Ag-Cu alloys, these relations agree well with the theoretical equations. In other words, the shape of true stress-true strain curves for Ag-Cu alloys almost coincide with the theoretical approximate curves, sigma=FepsilonN. [2] Strain hardening exponent N is very dependent on the micro structures of Ag-Cu alloys, but plastic coefficient F is independent of the micro structures. Coefficient F is directly proportional to sigma T. [3] The relationship of F to N can be expressed by equation of F=R(N+1)/NN+1. This equation may be described to be another form of the strain energy equation. Therefore parameter R is dependent on the strain energy. And the plots by computer agreed well with the experimental values.

Predicting post-incident stress in emergency personnel: a guide for mental health professionals on critical incident stress management teams.

The role of the Mental Health Professional (MHP) on Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) teams has been described as one of assess and refer. That is, to assess participants who are reacting strongly to a critical incident and refer them for additional psychological help. The purpose of this article is to present guidelines, from practice and from the research literature, for MHPs to use to help them predict which participants are likely to experience high-stress reactions following the critical incident. The stages of a CISD are briefly described and the predictive features associated with each stage are discussed.

[Is it possible to predict individual stress resistance by evaluating low dose benzodiazepine effect in modeled emotional stress].

Individual effects of the benzodiazepine tranquilizers phenazepam and gidazepam were studied in neurotic patients and in healthy volunteers tested for the operatory performance under emotiogenic conditions. It was found that manifestations of the tranquiliactivating, tranquilizing, and tranquilisedative effects depend on the individual sensitivity types of the patients and volunteers. The activating manifestations were most pronounced in hypostenic patients, while the sedative action was most significant in hyperstenic persons. The tranquilisedative effect of a single test dose of gidazepam (20 mg) allows predicting a low efficacy of the log-term therapy with benzodiazepines studied. In a group of 40 healthy volunteers, a single 20-mg dose of gidazepam increased the operatory under emotiogenic conditions performance in 19 persons and decreased the results in 12 cases. Volunteers in the first group were characterized as less stress-resistant with respect to a combination of psychological, psychophysiological, and hormonal-biochemical parameters as compared to the second group. It was concluded that the benzodiazepine test is worth of further elaborating as a means of predicting the stress resistance based on the effect of a model benzodiazepine tranquilizer under laboratory conditions.

[Application of stress urethral pressure profile for diagnosis and treatment of stress incontinence].

OBJECTIVE: To apply the stress urethral pressure profile (SUPP) to diagnose the genuine stress incontinence (GSI) and to evaluate the results of treatment. METHOD: 22 patients with GSI underwent SUPP and rest urethral pressure profile (RUPP) using Dantec Menuet. RESULT: The results showed that the pressure transmission ratio (PTR) was 0.68 +/- 0.06, and urethral close pressure (UCP) was -0.62 +/- 0.22 kPa in 22 patients. PTR and UCP raised significantly after operation in 5 patients, P < 0.01. The results of SUPP were compared with those RUPP. CONCLUSION: SUPP is important in both diagnosis and evaluation of GSI, although some limitation exists. To improve the level of diagnosis, it should be combined with other method in clinical use.

[The stressed physician. I. What conditions of the profession are stressful for the physician? What disorders do physicians experience and what are the effects on patients?].

Beside the traditional stress of the medical profession (namely the stress of time, dealing with tiresome patients, non-success in therapy, outgrowing of profession into the private life), during the last decades doctors have to cope with the growing instrumentalization and byrocratization of medicine. It may impair the personal relations of doctors and their attitude to patients. Medical doctors are more than other professionals under the pressure of worries and potential risks and therefore they are more anxious. The largest health risk for the medical professionals appears the burnout syndrome. It can be characterised as a loss of the positive relation to himself and to surrounding and the loss of the working competence.

How do tissues respond and adapt to stresses around a prosthesis? A primer on finite element stress analysis for orthopaedic surgeons.

Joint implant design clearly affects long-term outcome. While many implant designs have been empirically-based, finite element analysis has the potential to identify beneficial and deleterious features prior to clinical trials. Finite element analysis is a powerful analytic tool allowing computation of the stress and strain distribution throughout an implant construct. Whether it is useful depends upon many assumptions and details of the model. Since ultimate failure is related to biological factors in addition to mechanical, and since the mechanical causes of failure are related to load history, rather than a few loading conditions, chief among them is whether the stresses or strains under limited loading conditions relate to outcome. Newer approaches can minimize this and the many other model limitations. If the surgeon is to critically and properly interpret the results in scientific articles and sales literature, he or she must have a fundamental understanding of finite element analysis. We outline here the major capabilities of finite element analysis, as well as the assumptions and limitations.

Stress reactions and stress fractures of the proximal palmar aspect of the third metacarpal bone in horses: 58 cases (1980-1990).

The case records, radiographs, and nuclear bone scans of 58 horses with stress reactions or stress fractures of the proximal palmar aspect of the third metacarpal bone (MC3) were reviewed. There were 47 Standardbreds, 4 Quarter Horses, 3 Thoroughbreds, 2 Arabians, 1 Oldenburg, and 1 Pony of America. Fifty-six of the horses were racehorses or performance horses. The mean and median ages of affected horses were 4 and 3 years, respectively. Lameness ranged from mild to severe. Physical findings were usually subtle and included signs of pain on deep palpation of the proximal palmar aspect of MC3 and slight effusion of the middle carpal joint in some cases. Lameness was commonly improved by high palmar and palmar metacarpal nerve blocks or anesthesia of the middle carpal joint. Fifty-three horses had higher than normal radiopharmaceutical uptake in the proximal palmar aspect of MC3 in the left or right limb. The other 5 horses had higher than normal radiopharmaceutical uptake bilaterally. Fifty-six of the 63 limbs with abnormal bone scans also had abnormal radiographs. Treatment consisted of a variable period of rest (1 to 6 months). Healing was best assessed by follow-up bone scans. Of the 45 horses for which follow-up information was adequate, 29 (64%) returned to their previous level of performance.

[Consequences of AIDS in the lives of hemophiliacs and their caregiving families in Quebec: stress, response to stress and social support].

The following article focuses on the Québec portion of a national survey on the care needed by hemophiliacs with AIDS or having contracted the HIV virus. The survey was based on an approach that considers social support as a means to face stress. It also examined the needs of dispensers of care and relatives (whether mourning or not) of these persons. Participants revealed having experienced more stress because of an absence of support or simply negative support, than because of the physical deterioration caused by the disease. In addition, the question of confidentiality was often raised. In general, participants said they were satisfied with the support they had received, especially on the part of members of their family.

[Correlation between some stress-realizing and stress-limiting systems in an acute period of ischemic stroke].

Concentrations of stimulating (glutamate, aspartate) and inhibitory (GAMK, glycin) amino acids were measured in cerebrospinal liquid of 67 patients with ischemic stroke. The condition of stress-realising and stress-limiting systems (SRS and SLS) was assessed by dynamics of stimulating and inhibitory amino acids. High and rapidly increasing concentration of glutamate within the first 24 h of the disease predicts a poor prognosis. Early rise of GAMK concentration is a favourable and reliable prognostic sign. Hyperactivation of glutamatergic system and deficiency of inhibitory GAMK-ergic system cause imbalance between mediators and metabolites of SRS and SLS. The severity and duration of this imbalance determine severity of clinical symptoms and outcome of the disease.

Impact of mechanical stress and tension-stress on angiogenesis in wound healing.

Angiogenesis plays a fundamental role in the development of the embryonic vascular tree as well as in several normal and pathologic conditions during postnatal life. Blood supply, established by neovascularization, is imperative for histogenesis during wound healing as well as the limb lengthening applied extensively in the treatment of skeletal trauma sequalae. But little attention has been paid to this area. This review aims to summarize angiogenesis regulation, the process of angiogenesis in wound healing and angiogenesis under mechanical stress, particularly in association with the tension-stress principle.

[Characteristics of post-stress changes of lipid peroxidation and stress-limited effects of alpha-tocopherol in liver and serum of infant and old rats].

The process of lipid peroxidation (LPO) and the effects of alpha-tocopherol were studied in the liver and blood serum of albino male rats under acute immobilization stress. The results of the research show tissue and age specific responses of LPO in the intact and stressed animals. Pretreatment of animals with alpha-tocopherol decreased accumulation of LPO products especially in the liver.

[Stabilisation therapy as an answer to complex post-traumatic stress disorder. Diagnosis, treatment and research in women abused in childhood with a complex post-traumatic stress disorder].

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from traumatic experiences in childhood includes not only the customary post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms such as intrusions, avoidance and hyperarousal, but it also includes affect-dysregulation, dissociation, problems with self-image, relationships, interpretation and somatisation. The specialist literature expresses some support for stabilisation treatment. Preliminary results of a pilot study that evaluated a stabilisation course with a psycho-educational and cognitive behavioural content indicate that a course of that kind, if linked to research, is both feasible and effective. We therefore believe that further research by means of a randomized controlled trial is warranted.

Work stress and alcohol effects: a test of stress-induced drinking.

Drawing on both tension reduction and social learning theories, we hypothesized that work stressors lead to increased distress, which in turn promotes problematic alcohol use among vulnerable individuals. Vulnerable individuals are hypothesized to possess few personal and social resources for responding adaptively to work-related stressors and distress and to hold positive expectancies for alcohol's effects. We tested our model in a random sample of 574 employed adults, using a combination of path analytic and hierarchical moderated regression techniques. Results revealed no support for a simple tension reduction model of work stress-induced drinking and only limited support for a social learning model. We conclude that a much more circumscribed view of the etiologic role of work stress in problematic alcohol use is indicated.

Economic stress and suicide: multilevel analyses. Part 2: Cross-level analyses of economic stress and suicidal ideation.

This paper reports the second of two studies of the hypothesis that the economy affects suicide; both studies were based in the same community during approximately the same time period. Although many aggregate-level tests have been conducted using archival measures of unemployment and suicide (the approach used in Part 1), the impact of economic climate on suicidal ideation has not been measured at the individual level. In the study reported here, aggregate economic indicators were combined with individual-level measures of stressful events, symptoms, and suicidal ideation obtained in a survey of Los Angeles from 1978 to 1982. Each of the two studies revealed small associations between economic stress and suicide or suicidal ideation, but they were inconsistent with respect to specific subgroups.

[The effect of emotional-pain stress syndrome on the biochemical characteristics of the stress-realizing system and metastasis of Lewis lung carcinoma in mice].

The emotional-pain stress (EPS) in C57BL mice with Lewis carcinoma was studied for its influence on serotoninergic, noradrenergic, dopaminergic, glutamatergic, aspartatergic, glycinergic, taurinergic, GABA-ergic and cholinergic mediator mechanisms of the hypothalamus, the level of corticotropin, free and bound 11-corticosteroids, insulin, thyroxin and testosterone in blood plasma as well as on the content of catecholamines, their precursors and catabolites in urine. EPS contributed to a long-term activation of stress-realizing systems resulting in generalization of decompensation in them. The stimulating effect of EPS on the incidence and growth of metastases is established depending on the terms of its application.

[Effect of stress-inducing factors on monkey behavior. II. Hormonal indices and their relation to behavior in the modelling of emotional stress in hamadryas baboons].

The behavioural and hormonal indexes of adult males Papio hamadryas have been examined under condition of immobilized stress. The intercommunication between the hormonal status of the individual and its position in the hierarchical structure of the group is marked. The leader of the group possesses the mostly constant hormonal content during the different periods of the stress. The equal speed of reconstruction of hormonal concentration and behavioural indexes has been found. The different types of correlation between the level of adrenaline, cortisol and testosterone secretion and the frequency of aggressive behaviour have been observed.
