Resocialization of a group of ex-laboratory chimpanzees, Pan troglodytes.

In order to determine if socially deprived chimpanzees could establish an integrated social unit and reproduce, a group of wild-born individuals from a single-cage laboratory environment were released onto a small island in a South Florida tourist park in 1975. The present study was undertaken during June and July of 1988 to evaluate the long term results of the experiment and to document the reproductive history of the chimpanzees since their release on the island. The evidence presented in this paper suggests that it is possible for laboratory chimpanzees to be resocialized and to reproduce successfully.

Successful antidepressant treatment of nonparaphilic sexual addictions and paraphilias in men.

Nine of 10 consecutively evaluated men with DSM-III-R nonparaphilic sexual addictions or paraphilias noted improvement in sexual behaviors and depressive symptomatology while treated with fluoxetine, imipramine, or lithium. Depression was measured by means of the Inventory to Diagnose Depression. Sexual behavior was assessed in two dimensions, nonconventional interest and intensified desire, as measured by total sexual outlet. The author conceptualizes these behaviors as sexual dysregulation disorders associated with a primary mood disorder.

[Injuries and foreign bodies of the rectum].

Analysis of experience in the treatment of 43 patients with traumas of and foreign bodies in the rectum showed that the mechanism of the trauma and the degree of destruction are criteria of the choice of optimal therapeutic tactics. The authors show that nonoperative treatment is sufficiently adequate in superficial injuries, which account for almost 50% of all traumas. Surgical debridement is absolutely necessary in deep traumas; relieving colostomy is expedient in destruction of the rectal wall. The total mortality rate was 2.8%.

[Death in inverted head position].

A 56 year old man was found suspended in a sack in a head down position. Circumstances and autopsy findings are discussed. The leading pathophysiological mechanisms causing death are thought to be asphyxia due to compression of the chest and insufficient blood supply to the heart due to the head down position. The pathophysiological dysregulation of circulation in a head down position is discussed.

A sexual theory of persecutory delusions.

This paper presents a theory of the persecutory delusions which occur in the schizophrenias. Attention is turned to the masturbatory fantasies and dreams of neurotic patients undergoing psychoanalytic treatment. The similarity of the contents of these fantasies to the delusional contents suggests that the latter are in the nature of masturbatory fantasies. Their conversion into delusions results from psychical dissolution. The 'defence' activity is secondary to this.

An unusual case of accidental hanging during autoerotic practices in a 25-year-old male student is described and the autoerotic asphyxia syndrome briefly discussed. The authors stressed the importance of a correct diagnostic of accidental death in these cases.

Sexuality: a neglected component of child sexual abuse education and training.

Human sexuality is defined broadly as a function of total personality, especially to feelings of personal worth. A rationale, specific content, and teaching methodologies are suggested for the integration of sexuality content in the preparation of child welfare workers concerned with the prevention, intervention, and treatment of child sexual abuse.
