[Changes of microcirculation in nasal mucosa during -15 degrees head-down tilt].

Changes of microcirculation in nasal mucosa in 19 young men during 2.5 h head-down -15 degrees tilt (DHT) were observed with Laser Doppler Flowmetry. The results showed that the change of microcirculation in nasal mucosa was significant, blood volume, concentration and the velocity of blood flow increased, and distinct periodical wave of microvessels appeared during HDT. The results suggest that the change of microcirculation in nasal mucosa caused by fluid shift from the lower to the upper body is one of the important factors causing stuffy nose and breathe with a little difficulty.

Changes in the markers of bone metabolism following skeletal unloading.

To elucidate the mechanism in disuse bone atrophy induced by skeletal unloading, we studied the indices of bone resorption and bone formation in the femur of tail-suspended rats. The duration of the suspension ranged from 1 to 14 days. Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase mRNA, an index used to evaluate bone resorption, increased significantly more than the controls for the first 3 days of the tail-suspension experiments, compared those in controls. Osteocalcin and alkaline phosphatase, two common markers for bone formation, were also monitored. Osteocalcin mRNA started to decrease after 3 days of suspension. Five days later, alkaline phosphatase mRNA showed a decrease. Levels of both of these mRNAs remained low for the remaining suspension period. Sequential changes in the markers for bone metabolism indicate that the transient increase in bone resorption preceded the decrease in bone formation in the development of disuse bone atrophy induced by skeletal unloading.

Clinorotation affects the state of photosynthetic membranes in Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh.

Photosynthesis is known to provide nearly all the carbon and chemical energy needed for plant growth, it depends on many environmental factors and alternates when these factors fluctuate. The degree of the chloroplast membrane system development can be, to a certain extent, an indicator of the organelles' photosynthetic activity. To-date, changes in chloroplast size and ultrastructure as well as starch and pigment content in leaf mesophyll cells in microgravity have been found in variety of the angiosperm species investigated in this respect. However, available data are very limited and contradictory. Taking into account the importance of studying the photosynthesis process to elucidate the possibilities of plant physiological adaptation in altered gravity that is the basis for working out the technologies of space planting in controlled ecological life-support systems, we conducted the investigations of ultrastructure and state of the photosynthetic apparatus in Arabidopsis thaliana leaf mesophyll cells at the different stages of plant development under clinorotation.

Baroreflex during exercise in different postures before and after 20-days bed rest.

Vagal-cardiac baroreflex functions in young healthy humans (n=6) were investigated in four different conditions; supine rest, seated rest, supine and seated exercise (50 watts) before and after 20-day horizontal bed rest. By selectively stimulating carotid baroreceptors using a neck pressure and suction technique, the primary finding was that the baroreflex sensitivity tuation at which we observed a tendency for an attenuation (0.05<p<0.07) of baroreflex sensitivity. The range of decrease in heart rate during neck suction was diminished (p<0.05) after bed rest, but only during supine rest. In conclusion, an attenuation of carotid vagal baroreflex after inactivity was found to be dependent on posture, and was found only in supine rest. It was also concluded that an exaggerated exercise tachycardia found after bed rest is not due to an attenuation of vagal carotid baroreflex sensitivity in itself.

Effects of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system on the cardiovascular system during 20-days bed rest.

Long term change of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) induced by bed rest and its effects on cardiovascular system are still controversial. The purpose of this study was to obtain a general conclusion on these questions by analyzing our two 20-days horizontal bed rest experiments in past two years with 18 subjects. Plasma renin activity and aldosterone were consistently increased during the bed rest, but angiotensin II was increased only during the early days. Decrease in urinary sodium excretion and increase in urinary potassium excretion were observed during day 3-8 and day 7-12, respectively. Mean arterial pressure increased during day 3-8. Pulse pressure was returned to pre-bed rest level by day 10 after an initial decrease. All these results indicated an activated RAAS and its active effects on cardiovascular and overall fluid regulating systems during our horizontal bed rest studies. Direct effect of change in gravitational force on renal pressure-sensitive cells or effects related to physical inactivity may explain our results.
