A racemization test in peptide synthesis using 4-(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-4-methylmorpholinium chloride (DMT-MM).

Racemization of the C-terminal amino acid (Ala) has been studied in various solvents during coupling between 4-methoxybenzyloxycarbonyl (Z(OMe))-Gly-L-Ala-OH and phenylalanine benzyl ester (H-Phe-OBzl) with 4-(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-thiazin-2-yl)-4-methylmorpholinium chloride (DMT-MM). The reaction occurred without substantial racemization in AcOEt, tetrahydrofuran (THF), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), CH3CN, and 2-PrOH, while a slight racemization was observed in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), EtOH, and MeOH. The extent of racemization may correlate with the polarity of the solvents.

[Consumption of the triazine herbicide atrazine by laccase and laccase-free variants of the soil fungus Mycelia sterilia INBI-2-26].

Asporogenic fungus Mycelia sterilia INBI 2-26 isolated from tropical soils with high residual dioxin content (as a result of Agent Orange defoliant treatment during the Vietnamese-American war) and capable of atrazine decomposition was treated to obtain protoplasts. This technique resulted in isolation of laccase-positive and laccase-negative clones. Atrazine consumption by liquid surface cultures of Mycelia sterilia INBI 2-26 was monitored by using enzyme immune assay and reversed phase HPLC. Atrazine (20 micrograms/l) stimulated fungal growth. Laccase-positive clone consumed up to 80% of atrazine within four weeks. However, no correlation of atrazine consumption and laccase activity in the culture medium was observed. Moreover, the laccase-negative clone was also capable of consuming at least 60-70% of atrazine within three weeks. Surprisingly, in the corresponding control set (cultivation of laccase-negative clone without atrazine) an unidentified metabolite having a retention time and UV-spectrum similar to those of atrazine was also found. It was concluded that the presence of laccase was not a crucial factor in atrazine consumption by this fungus.

[Effect of the triazine herbicide herbazine-50 on the nitrate-nitrite concentration of corn].

Studied were the changes in the nitrate-nitrite content of maize grown on areas treated with herbazine-50 and artificial nitrogen fertilizers. The chemical analysis of various parts of the plant (stem. leaves, flowers and grains) revealed that the content of nitrates and nitrites was highest in the ears, and lowest in the leaves. Highest was also the content of nitrates and nitrites in all parts of the plant in maize from areas treated with herbazine-50 at the rate of 4 kg of a. i. per hectare as well as with artificial nitrogen fertilizers (ammonium nitrate and superphosphate at 450 kg/ha), followed by maize obtained from areas where ammonium nitrate and superphosphate at 450 kg/ha were introduced only. Slightly lower amounts of nitrates and nitrites were found in maize from areas treated with herbazine-50 at 4 kg/ha only, and lowest was their content in maize from areas that were neither fertilized nor treated with herbazine-50.
