Adult rats are used to consume their diet within the space of 30 min. They are sacrified after fasting 2 hours or 30 to 90 min. after the end of meal. Blood sugars are determined. -- The administration of galactose (GAL group) at 40 p. 100 of the diet induces a high postprandial galactosemia (near 600 mg p. 100 ml) without glycemia change: the absorbed galactose is not converted into glucose. -- The consumption of glucose-galactose mixture (G-G group) don't induce postprandial hyperglycemia. However, galactosemia is about 250 mg p. 100 ml. In our conditions, glucose and galactose seem absorbed by two different systems. The galactose absorption would be favoured; otherwise, the absorbed glucose would be partly epimerized into galactose. Galatitolemia goes on 24 hours after the meal but it is not immediately modified by the galactose consumption. The galactosemia and galactitolemia variations are independent one of the others.

UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase was measured in rat pancreatic islets, the generation of D-glucose 1-phosphate from UDP-glucose and PPI being eventually coupled to the generation of L-[U-14C]glutamate from 14C-labelled alpha-ketoglutarate. The activity of the enzyme was about one order of magnitude lower in islet than liver homogenates. The affinity of the enzyme for either UDP-glucose or PPi was comparable, however, in liver and islets. The activity of UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase was somewhat lower in islets from animals with inherited or acquired diabetes mellitus than in those from control rats. These findings are considered in connection with the accumulation of glycogen in islets of hyperglycemic animals.
Somatostatin inhibits in a dose-dependent manner the glucagon secretion in the presence of up to 5 mM glucose, whereas the suppressed glucagon release in the presence of greater than or equal to 10 mM glucose, 10 mM glyceraldehyde, 30 mM fructose or 30 mM mannose is characterized by an increase of hormone release under the influence of somatostatin.

In a population of intact cells of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae the dynamics of glycolytic metabolism were investigated under the condition of sustained oscillations. At 5-s intervals cells were quenched in -40 degrees C methanol, extracted and the intracellular concentrations of glycolytic metabolites, adenine nucleotides and phosphate were analysed. Oscillations were found for the glycolytic intermediates glucose 6-phosphate, fructose 6-phosphate and fructose 1,6-bisphosphate. At variance with earlier reports on transient glycolytic oscillations, some intermediates further down the glycolytic pathway did not oscillate significantly, even though NADH did. In addition, the adenylate energy charge and the free energy of ATP hydrolysis oscillated significantly. Dynamic coupling through the latter may be responsible for this effective compartmentation of glycolytic dynamics.
