The Authors report the results of an investigation carried out in a factory producing tartaric acid in order to evaluate the effects of occupational exposure to this substance. A group of 44 subjects exposed to the acid and a group of 30 subjects not exposed, as a means of control, were submitted to anamnestic questionnaire, othorinolaringoyatric examination, spirometry, bronchodilatation test with salbutamol. Our data show a higher prevalence of oropharyngeal and cutaneous lesions in the exposed subjects, while no difference between the two groups was found for dental, bronchial and gastric lesions.

Carprofen is a new non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and a phenylpropionic acid derivative. It seldom causes pruritus, erythema or urticaria. Since 1 year, we have observed 8 photosensitive eruptions associated with Carprofen, a surprising side effect for this group of derivatives. The skin eruption started from 4 days to 3 weeks after the initiation of the treatment and was always limited to the exposed areas of the skin. The eruption was erythematopapular, but also vesioular or bullous. 2 cases required systemic corticosteroids. Photo patch tests were positive, suggesting a photoallergic process. Phototherapy should be avoided in patients treated with carprofen.

A female patient developed a severely irritating papulous dermatosis localized on the face and arms, running a chronic course. Histology displayed blister formation and mucin deposits in the corium. Laboratory determinations showed antibodies against thyroglobulin and cytoplasmic antibodies with high titers; thyroid function tests were normal.

Glucose tolerance was investigated in 41 patients with pustulosis palmaris et plantaris. Twenty-eight (68%) of the patients showed abnormal results. These findings suggest that pustulosis palmaris et plantaris is associated with impaired carbohydrate metabolism.
We describe here nine women who had similar distinctive clinical features that consisted of painful red-to-purple macules, papules, and plaques on the digits, predominantly on the toes. All patients reported that exposure to cold had preceded their symptoms. Histologic study demonstrated a lymphocytic vasculitis, characterized by lymphocytes infiltrating the walls of blood vessels in eight (88%) of nine lesions. This pattern of inflammation is different from the perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate that is common to lupus erythematosus, erythema multiforme, lymphocytic infiltration of the skin (Jessner), and drug eruptions. It also serves to distinguish the disorder from other clinical conditions resembling it, such as cellulitis, herpes simplex infection, and disseminated gonococcemia. To the best of our knowledge, this lymphocytic vasculitis has not been previously described as occurring in pernio. We believe the unique disorder that we are reporting is a common, but infrequently recognized, variant of pernio.
INTRODUCTION: Clinical expression of pemphigoid can sometimes be misleading. Localized dyshidrosis is rarely reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: We observed 4 cases of pemphigoid with unusual dyshidrosis lesions. Skin biopsy was unspecific in both cases. Immunofluorescence gave the diagnosis in both. One case responded to low-dose general corticosteroids associated with local applications of corticosteroids. The other patients required high-dose oral corticosteroids. CONCLUSION: Our cases illustrated the misleading dyshidrosis nature of certain pemphigoids and the need for repeated skin biopsies with immunofluorescence in case of recent development of dyshidrosis in elderly subjects. As in the literature, and despite the localized nature of the lesions, general corticosteroid treatment appears necessary in many cases.
