Processes that contribute to radiocesium decontamination of feta cheese.

In a series of experiments, the transfer of radiocesium from ovine milk to feta cheese was investigated through modifications of the standard cheese making procedure. All variations explored showed no significant change in the percentage of radiocesium transfer and the milk-to-cheese transfer coefficient was determined as f=.79 plus/minus .04 L.kg-1. It is concluded that cesium, like the rest of the alkali metals, remains in the water phase and thus follows very closely the distribution of moisture into the products of cheese making. The possibility of radiocesium decontamination of mature feta during the customary storage of the product in brine was also explored in a second series of experiments. The theoretical model employed in the analysis of cesium transport from feta to brine is presented in the Appendix to this paper. Predictions of the model were validated by experiments. A procedure is thus proposed for decontaminating mature feta during storage through successive replacements of the storage medium. Nomograms are presented for the determination of the optimum time interval between changes of the brine and the radiocesium concentration remaining in the feta. Changes in the properties of the product induced by the proposed treatment were also investigated with respect to composition, taste, and overall quality.

[Determination of 90 Sr in milk by solvent extraction of 90Y (author's transl)].

In order to replace the conventional method using violent fuming nitric acid, a new method for the determination of 90 Sr in milk has been developed by using the solvent extraction with bis (2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (HDEHP). The daughter nuclide 90Y in a radiochemical equilibrium with its parent 90Sr was extracted with 2:1 HDEHP-toluene from the acid solution (1M HCL) of milk ash sample prepared by dry-ashing. After stripping with 8M HCL, 90Y, together with stable yttrium added as carrier, was precipated as oxalate to prepare beta-counting source. The radiochemical purity was confirmed by decay curve. The decontamination of strontium was checked by applying non-dispersive fluorescence X-ray analysis using 133Ba as irradiating source. Bone samples of cow were also analyzed by the same method and the results were compared with those obtained by other methods. The duplicate crosschecking analyses of finely ground bone samples were carried out to examine the effectiveness of this method. This simple new method was found to be very effective for the routine analysis of 90Sr in these samples.

Relationship between caesium (137Cs) load, cardiovascular symptoms, and source of food in 'Chernobyl' children -- preliminary observations after intake of oral apple pectin.

Seventeen years after the nuclear power accident at Chernobyl, most of the radio-contamination among the population of Southern Belarus is caused by incorporation of long-lived radioisotopes. The varying levels of 137Cs observed among children in this area are explained by the source of their food, especially by the consumption of contaminated milk produced privately. We stratified children from rural areas of Belarus (caesium [137Cs] contamination >5 Ci/km(2)) by their 137Cs loads into three distinct groups (group 1, <5 Bq/kg body weight [BW]; group 2, 38.4 +/- 2.4 Bq/kg BW; group 3, 122 +/- 18.5 Bq/kg BW). We determined the relationship between the 137Cs load and the children's main source of food and recorded their cardiovascular symptoms. Cardiovascular symptoms, ECG alterations, and arterial hypertension were significantly more frequent in children with high 137Cs burden than in children with very low 137Cs burden. Children with moderate and high 137Cs loads (groups 2 and 3) received apple pectin, a food additive, for 16 days. Apple pectin significantly decreased 137Cs loads in these groups (39% and 28%, respectively). ECG alterations improved, while cardiovascular symptoms and hypertension did not change in any group.

[The effect of food products with an elevated radionuclide level on the blood and urine indices in rats].

Food influence, including raw meat with radionuclides (6.66 x 10(3) - 20.72 x 10(3) Bq/kg) during 30 days, on some homeostasis values was studied in white not pedigree rats. Erythrocyte number decrease, leukocyte total number increase by twice, young cell-metamyelocyte appearance, the decrease of total protein quantity and of blood serum gamma-globulin fraction level, liver enzyme activity decrease, and liver function disturbance have been ascertained. The obtained data can be the grounds for the future studies in the field of prognostic criterion development for the evaluation of ionizing irradiation small dose effect on the organism.

Long-lived radionuclides in food: 90Sr and 137Cs in the Israel diet.

Routine monitoring of Strontium-90 and Cesium-137 levels in the main classes of food consumed in Israel has been carried out for a number of years. Calculations have been made of the intake of these isotopes by various groups in the Israel population using Food Consumption Survey data made available by the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics. More detailed analyses have been carried out to calculate the exposure of groups selected on the basis of demographic, economic and family-size criteria. This was carried out in an attempt to detect "critical groups" in the population who might be overly exposed. Results of these data indicate that in the case of Israel the monitoring of a single food item such as milk or the extrapolation of local fallout data cannot be relied on to give an estimate of radionuclide exposure through food. The relation between high consumption groups and the intake of "average" consumers is discussed in detail and the use of the statistical models developed in these studies for the estimates of radionuclide exposure during periods of high fallout levels which occurred in the past and possible applications with regard to other environmental contaminants is discussed.

[Analysis of risk factors for the formation of internal exposure dose to the rural population and effectiveness of preventive actions in agriculture in the long-term after the Chernobyl Accident].

The regularities in the formation of internal exposure doses to the population living in the Chernobyl affected areas are described. The factors responsible for changes in doses are identified and their significance is assessed. The effects of countermeasures on the radiation situation variations are estimated. The need for an addressed application of countermeasures is shown with taking into account types of rural settlements based on the radioecological factors responsible for dose formation in the population.

[The analysis of coefficient of 137Cs transfer from soil into potato in relationship with 137Cs content in soil and plant mineral feed].

The soil-potato transfer factor for 137Cs (TF) was estimated by using results of 137Cs activity concentration measurements in 214 samples of soil and potato taken at fields with various level of contamination with 137Cs. The relationships between the coefficient TF and soil characteristics (acidity pH (KCl), content of K2O, P2O5, CaO and MgO in soil) and soil contamination with 137Cs have been analysed. The results show that the TF values tend to decrease with increasing concentration of 137Cs, K2O, P2O5, and CaO in considered sod-podsolic sandyloam soil. The regression function describing the TF dependence of 137Cs, K2O, P2O5, and CaO content in soil has been derived.

Minimum detectable activity in gamma-ray spectrometry--statistical properties and limits of applicability.

Some statistical properties of the essential physical quantity "Minimum Detectable Activity" were analyzed, as well as the limits of its applicability in gamma-ray spectrometry. It was shown that the Minimum Detectable Activity is not linear with respect to the quantity of the measured sample and it is advisable not to calculate the Minimum Detectable Activity per unit mass or volume (in Bq kg-1 or Bq cm-3). The MDA has a clear decisive relevance to samples that have an identical geometry and chemical composition with that of the sample that was used to derive the MDA. The relative uncertainty of the Minimum Detectable Activity is approximately +/- 32%. It is recommended not to exclude from evaluations those results that are below minimum detectable activities.

[Dynamics of the factors of 137Cs transfer to natural and sown grasses in the long term after the accident at the Chernobyl power plant].

The regularities of changes in factors of 137Cs transfer to natural and sown grasses in the longterm period after the Chernobyl accident are described. The dynamics of changes in factors of 137Cs transfer to sown grasses over the period of 1993 to 1999 was of a non-uniform character. On average, these transfer factors (TF) tended to decrease in that period. A significant tendency for an increase in TF to sown grasses was noted for 1997-1999. The half-life periods of decrease in TF to natural grasses in the period 1993-1999 were shown to be ranged from 4.6 to 24.6 years. It was demonstrated that the differences in the TF dynamics between sown and natural grasses were related to the peculiarities of their development and application of countermeasures.
