Validation of the General Health Questionnaire in female video display unit (VDU) operators in Singapore.

Fifty-seven Chinese female Video Display Unit operators employed in a multi-national company were asked to complete the 28-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28). This is part of a study on stress and asthenopia in this group of workers. Validity of the GHQ-28 was determined by comparison with the Clinical Interview Schedule (CIS). The GHQ-28 was found to give optimum results with a cut-off score of 5/6. The CIS classified 28.07% as cases and this was comparable to the estimated prevalence of 28.03% derived from the GHQ.

[Illumination in the dental office and eye protection].

Visual problems may be due to an inadequate illumination. In this article some recommendations are presented with regard to the illumination in the dental office. Prior to this, a description of some technical terms such as lux and candela is presented. Some light sources may be dangerous for the eye if used for a longer period of time. Mechanical damage to the eyes and infection by hard and large particles of the aerosol may be serious. Spectacles and air suction devices are therefore a necessity. Lastly, some attention is given to working with monitors of personal computers.

[Arterial impedance in transient modes of the performance of the circulation system].

The authors consider transient processes for modifying arterial impedance, peripheral and elastic resistances of the arterial system, as well as some major hemodynamic parameters early in muscular performance. The analysis was made by applying experimental findings from 74 athletes. The transient processes were derived by using the mathematical modelling techniques on a computer. The termination of transient processes of arterial impedance and its determinants was shown to be asynchronous. Whether the values of arterial impedance at rest and during exercises of unlimited power are comparatively invariant is also discussed in the paper.

[Asthenopia and monitor characteristics].

An epidemiological survey on 30,000VDT operators has been carried out to evaluate the relationship between asthenopia and monitor characteristics. A VDU operator has been classified as asthenopeic if he complained about at least two of the following ten symptoms: headache, tearing, eye smarting, blurred vision, double vision, ocular itching, photophobia, blinking, nausea, eye heaviness. Visual discomfort has been related to 1) the presence of flicker; the possibility to regulate, 2) brightness, 3) height; and 4) inclination of monitor. Asthenopia has resulted statistically correlated to the presence of flicker and to the impossibility of regulating height and inclination of monitor for both sexes. The possibility to regulate monitor brightness has not determined a reduction of visual discomfort either in men or in women.

Video telescopic sinus surgery technique for teaching.

Video-endoscopic sinus surgery is a team approach which has evolved from classic, endoscopic sinus surgery in treating over 500 patients. Unlike classic endoscopic sinus surgery which has the surgeon viewing and operating through the endoscope, this technique permits the surgeon to operate while viewing the T.V. monitor using two hands for instrumentation. This technique greatly facilitates hands-on teaching and learning, while simultaneously providing a reproducible method of documentation.

Dermatological symptoms among visual display unit operators using plasma display and cathode ray tube screens.

A questionnaire survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of dermatological complaints in 672 full time visual display unit (VDU) operators in Singapore. Two hundred and sixty-nine operators worked with plasma display (PD) screens, while the other 403 used cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors. The overall one year period prevalence rate for dermatological complaints was 12%. Thirty-six (13%) PD operators and 46 (11%) CRT operators had skin complaints. The age and sex distribution of persons in the two groups were similar. Twenty-eight (10.4%) PD workers and 24 (6.0%) CRT workers had symptoms of itch, tingling, or the feeling of being stroked by a feather after working with the VDU for some time. Furthermore, 19 (7.1%) PD and 14 (3.5%) CRT workers stated that their skin problems improved during weekends or when they were off duty. The difference between these rates were not statistically significant. Operators with dermatological complaints in the past year were more likely to have a personal history of atopy, complain about their work environment, and have musculoskeletal symptoms of the shoulder and low back. The results indicate that the prevalence and nature of dermatological symptoms among operators using either type of VDU monitor are similar.
