[Umbilical cord compression by an amnionic band].

A case report is given from personal observations of an intrauterine death due to constriction of the umbilical cord by amniotic band. Previously reported cases and current hypotheses for the etiology of amniotic band are reviewed and merit clinical attention.

[Animal experiment studies of amnion transplantation as peritoneal replacement].

In view of the favorable properties of the amniotic membranes as a peritoneal substitute, the following questions were posed: (1) Can the vitality of the amniotic epithelium be preserved by cryoconservation? (2) Which reactive changes occur in an intraabdominal amniotic graft? Animal studies gave the following findings. The vitality of the amniotic cells was not impaired by cryoconservation. A histiocytic demarcation zone developed on the membrane.

[Early amnion rupture as a cause of multiple congenital abnormalities in the newborn infant].

We describe two children with congenital deformities due to the early amniotic rupture syndrome. One child who had an amniotic band around the upper arm suffered from a distal nerve lesion. This was relieved following surgery. The second child died shortly after birth of multiple congenital malformations. The most usual findings in this syndrome are constriction of a limb by an amniotic band, scoliosis or syndactyly due to oligohydramnion with compression. We discuss one accepted hypothesis (subscribed by an experimental animal study) of the aetiology of the early amniotic rupture syndrome.

Preterm labor: the role of amnionitis.

This prospective study represents an attempt to find a link between subclinical intra-amniotic infection and preterm singleton labor in 27 asymptomatic patients with intact membranes. Liquor amnii was obtained by transabdominal amniocentesis and cultured for anaerobic and aerobic bacteria and mycoplasmas. None of these cultures was positive. The value of gas-liquid chromatographic determination of volatile and non-volatile acids in liquor amnii could not be determined because amniotic infections did not occur in the population under study.

Chronic Ureaplasma urealyticum amnionitis associated with abruptio placentae.

Ureaplasma urealyticum is a common inhabitant of the lower genital tract of women. It is unclear whether or not the microorganism plays a role in provoking spontaneous abortion. Reported is a U urealyticum infection of placenta and amniotic fluid in an immunologically competent host resulting in abruptio placentae and spontaneous abortion during the second trimester of pregnancy. U urealyticum was isolated from peripheral maternal blood twice. Immunologic alterations, namely a transiently reversed OKT4/OKT8 rate and a decrease in immunoglobulin G levels, were detected in the patient. U urealyticum must be considered as a pathogen able to interfere with normal fetal development.
