14.9% (208/1400) of the women who gave births in 1985 and 1989 in Gipuzkoa (Basque Country, Spain), was considered to have 'protective' levels (> or = 0.01 IU/ml) of tetanus antitoxin as measured by the passive haemagglutination test. Prevalence of protective antibodies was correlated to the years when women were born: 54.7% (64/117) of those born after 1965 were considered to have 'protective' levels (> or = 0.01 IU/ml) of tetanus antitoxin in contrast to those born before 1956 [only 6.2% (21/338)]. This is considered to be due to the infant immunization campaign introduced in 1965 in the Basque Country. Thus, we conclude that the tetanus immunization campaigns in the Basque Country adult population is urgent.
Concanavalin A, wheat germ agglutinin and the ovalbumin glycopeptide are all inhibitors of the cytotoxic effect of diphtheria toxin on Chinese hamster cells. Ovalbumin glycopeptide loses its inhibitory property after treatment with beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase. This demonstrates the importance of the glycopeptide structure for the mechanism of inhibition. The glycopeptide may be a toxin cell-surface receptor analogue. Diphtheria toxin-resistant mutants were isolated in order to search for cells that might have an altered toxin receptor. One mutant was 10- to 15-fold more resistant to diphtheria toxin than wild-type cells when protein synthesis was measured as a function of toxin concentration. However, when protein synthesis was measured as a function of time at a high toxin concentration, the time before onset of inhibition was identical in the mutant and wild-type cells. We present evidence indicating that the resistance of this mutant can be accounted for by a decreased affinity of toxin for a cell-surface receptor.
We evaluated and presented here, the features of the eleven cases of food-borne botulism who admitted to the Infectious Diseases Department of Ibni Sina Hospital of Ankara University. Three of the cases admitted in 1984 and eight of them admitted in 1987. All of the cases were caused by home-prepared foods which had been eaten without cooking; the types of the food were green beans and pepper with sauce. In these cases the main symptoms and signs were generalized muscular weakness, dry mouth, dysphagia, diplopia, ptosis of the eyelids; besides these the other clinical symptoms and signs were seen in some patients. Although toxin couldn't be detected in the patients' sera by mouse-toxin neutralization, the EMG findings supported our diagnoses. To the three patients in the first group, botulinal anti-toxin was not given and two of them died. Anti-toxin was administered to the seven patients in the second group, none of them died.
It was shown that purified and concentrated by the "Diaferm" method antibotulin sera from horse and cattle blood failed to differ by anaphylactogenic properties; at the same time in sensitization of the organism to protein of one animal species the use of the sera of another species provided a lesser reactogenicity of the preparation. The antigenic activity of the purified and concentrated sera from the blood or horses and cows in testing on rabbits was identical, but in response to cow alpha-globulin the animals responsed by a more intensive production of precipitins. The activity of cow and horse antibotulin serum (determined by the rate and stability of their association with the corresponding toxin) proved to be identical.
