Cutis verticis gyrata is a term used to describe the appearance of deep, linear skin folds in the scalp. Primary and secondary types of this condition exist. No treatment is typically needed, although surgical modalities may be beneficial for severely disfiguring types.

Successful treatment of dandruff with 1.5% ciclopirox olamine shampoo in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Dandruff is a chronic scalp condition characterized by scaling. The common causative agent is now accepted to be the lipophilic yeast Malassezia furfur. Ketoconazole, a highly effective antifungal agent against M. furfur has been used for the treatment of dandruff. AIM: To determine whether a 1.5% ciclopirox olamine shampoo is as effective as a 2% ketoconazole shampoo for the treatment of mild to moderate dandruff. METHODS: A total of 64 patients, with mild to moderate dandruff, participated in the study. The study consisted of three consecutive phases: a 2-week washout period, a 4-week treatment period and a 2-week post-treatment period. Patients were randomized equally to either the 1.5% ciclopirox olamine shampoo or 2% ketoconazole shampoo. An overall dandruff score was calculated using an area of dandruff involvement score and a severity score. Patients evaluated the presence of pruritus and also reported a global evaluation of efficacy. RESULTS: In all, 57 patients successfully completed all three phases. The overall dandruff score declined progressively throughout the treatment period for both shampoos. A slight increase in pruritus was observed in the ciclopirox olamine treatment group during the post-treatment phase. Regarding global self-assessment of efficacy, both treatment groups were pleased with their scalp condition following treatment. CONCLUSION: Ciclopirox olamine shampoo appears to offer an effective, safe and easy to use treatment for mild to moderate dandruff.

Incidence and prevalence of head lice in a district health authority area.

There are very few recent studies of the incidence and prevalence of head lice in the UK. A population-based questionnaire survey was carried out in a district health authority area. Two hundred and four of 235 primary schools (87%) agreed to participate. A total of 21,556 of 43,889 (49%) questionnaires were returned by parents. Overall 438 children had head lice at the time of the survey, giving a prevalence of 2.03%; 8,059 had had lice at some time in the last year giving an annual incidence of 37.4%.

[Prevalence of pediculus humanus capitis infestation in schoolchildren at Despeñaderos, Córdoba Province].

BACKGROUND: Approximately 80% of Argentine children have pediculosis, making it imperious to detect the defects in the prevention and control actions for this parasitosis. OBJECTIVES: To study the infestation level by P. h. capitis, its temporal variation, and the association between infestation and host characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A monthly census in children of 6-8 years old from 2 primary schools (state and private) was carried out, recording the parasite stages found, children characteristics (sex, colour and length of hair), and infestation level. Data were analysed by means of contingency tables, difference of proportions, quotient of chances, and rank correlation coefficient. The independence of variables was analysed by c' test. RESULTS: The prevalence and chances of becoming infested were higher at the state school, where also all infestation levels were recorded, which did not occur at the private institute. The frequency of children infested was significantly lower when they had short hair. The correlation among infestation degree and hair length (short-long) was only significant for boys. Pediculosis cases were recorded at the beginning of the school year in both educative institutions, which demonstrated that infestation was acquired not only at school but also at home. CONCLUSIONS: Pediculosis is a social problems and the whole community must participate in preventive and control actions, for which sanitary education is essential, and the myth that the school is the only place of contagion must be eradicated.

The head louse in Sierra Leone: an epidemiological study among school children, in the Njala area.

A survey of five primary schools in the Njala area, Sierra Leone showed that Pediculus humanus capitis infestation is wide-spread. The overall prevalence was 6.8% among 1007 school children examined. Infestation rates varied between schools from 1.4% to 14.6% and the prevalence of infestation increased with age, from 3.1% among class I children to 10.2% among class IV and decreased to 4.9% among class VI children. Females had a higher infestation rate (8.3%) than their male counterparts (5.4%). The infestation rate was higher' in children whose fathers were Farmers (9.4%) followed by Traders (7.8%), Artisans (6.5%) and Professionals who had the lowest infestation rate of (5.8%). Sharing of beds, beddings and combs had a significant effect (P < 0.01) on the rate of infestation. The infestation was light, therefore, impetigo was minimal. Overcrowding at home is the main factor facilitating the transmission of the infestation from one head to another among these children.
