Hygienic care in uncircumcised infants.

A written questionnaire was used to determine the advice pediatricians give concerning hygienic care of uncircumcised infants. A telephone survey was conducted in which new mothers were asked what they had been told about genital hygiene and how they were caring for their infants. Pediatricians' advice concerning hygiene in uncircumcised infants varied greatly. Most counseled mothers to retract the foreskin and clean the child, but few (22%) knew when this could be readily accomplished. None of the mothers of uncircumcised children had been told when the foreskin could be expected to retract, and only half had been given any advice concerning hygiene. Mothers of infants whose foreskins had been manipulated by physicians felt this practice was traumatic. Both this and the stress of caring for their infants without adequate instruction caused 40% of the mothers to state they would choose to have the next child circumcised. Recommendations for hygienic care of uncircumcised infants are given.

[Trichomonal balano-posthitis. Report of 16 cases (author's transl)].

Glans penis and foreskin lesions occurred in sixteen patients (+/- 34 p. 100) in a group of 46 males with trichomoniasis and were predominantly of the erosive type. Trichomonal balano-posthitis has been associated with trichomonal uretritis in 7 patients, with syphilis in 4 patients and with genital warts in 4. The dominant complication was phimosis. Long foreskin should be considered a favorable condition in infection of glans penis and foreskin due to T. vaginalis. The dense predominantly lymphocytic infiltration in the upper dermis characterized the histology of the lesions. An inguinal lymph node biopsy specimen demonstrated the features of reactive hyperplasia, a cause of inguinal lymphadenopathy. The condition responded well to treatment with metronidazol during 9-10 days.

The genital Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma flora of healthy and diseased dogs.

The genital mycoplasma and ureaplasma flora was compared in 136 dogs with varied reproductive histories. Mycoplasmas were recovered from 88% of vulvovaginal swabs, 85% preputial swabs and 72% semen samples. Isolation rates were slightly higher from dogs that were infertile or had evidence of genital disease but the differences from those that were fertile or clinically normal were statistically significant only in the male. Ureaplasmas were recovered from half the females sampled. Higher, but not statistically significant isolation rates (75%) were made from infertile females with purulent vulvar discharge versus those that were clinically normal and fertile (40%). In the male dog there was a significantly higher incidence of ureaplasmas in the prepuce of infertile animals (69%) than those that were fertile (0%) (p less than or equal to 0.05). Semen isolations although not significantly higher in infertile males, were all made from ejaculates, with subnormal motility, low sperm counts and/or a high percentage of midpiece and tail abnormalities (bent or tightly coiled).
