Current labour market developments, i.e. decreasing manpower demands, aggravation of selection, will in the years ahead confront vocational rehabilitation policy, too, with important decisions in terms of expanded service provision or intensified selectiveness. Short-term economic, labour market-oriented cost-benefit considerations will in this process be opposed by longer-term, education and social policy ones. The risk of lasting ruptures occurring between the employment-possessing population and the long-term unemployed, or those in highly jeopardized jobs, with the new social inequities thus generated, will in particular have to be given attention in future decision-making.
In our modern working world, young adults with disabilities not only face problems in securing employment, but, also, in finding adequate vocational training places. This had in the 1970s lead to the establishment of vocational training institutions. Local employment offices and employers however, again and again complain about poor organic capacity and endurance in young people trained in these centres. It consequently is very difficult for these young people to be placed in the open labour market. A study of the various principal demands on motor functioning and of pulmonary capacity was to clarify the extent to which deficits in motor and cardiopulmonary fitness exist. A total of 328 subjects (mean age 18:5 years), among them 17 wheelchair users, were examined relative to their motor and organic capacity. Significant deficits were found in nearly all component functions compared to nonhandicapped peers, with arm and trunk muscle strength the only exception to this negative performance picture. The motor deficits found were greatest in respect of dexterity and balance. Possible reasons for these motor deficits are discussed, and measures concerning disability-specific sports classes are discussed.

A questionnaire inquiry was carried out with the Psychological Services of the Vocational Training Centres in the Federal Republic of Germany, directed at their fields of work and their position within the facility. The Psychological Services invariably are involved in the admission procedure, and counselling as well as therapeutic work, individual and in groups, have become a firmly established focus alongside their traditional diagnostic tasks. Aspects of supervision are increasingly being used as new methods of personnel development. Though staffing has improved since 1977, great variations still exist between the various centres, and our findings clearly point out the gaps in service provision related with lower client/psychologist ratios. Following introduction and consolidation of the Psychological Services, a phase of re-orientation seems to be under way, with special attention to focus on interactional processes within the facilities, on implementation of rehabilitation objectives, and on entry of clients with chronic mental impairment.

Results of an initial analysis of the employment specialist intervention time provided to consumers in supported competitive employment programs operated by the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (RRTC) at Virginia Commonwealth University over 8 years was described. Analyses focused on the amount of staff intervention time provided as a percentage of the total number of hours worked by a consumer each week and a comparison of the amount of intervention time provided to two subsamples. Results indicated that consumers previously classified moderately or severely mentally retarded did not require a significantly greater amount of intervention time than those previously classified as borderline or mildly retarded during the first year of employment.
The responses to questions regarding financial aid counseling show a small but significant increase in the quality of counseling when compared to 1983 responses. The percent of students who received "enough" information increased, while the percent who received "no" information on financial aid decreased. In addition, seniors have a greater awareness of the broad range of topics that concern securing and managing loans. Improvement can also be seen in the schools' effectiveness in providing assistance in career and placement counseling. The percentage of seniors who said the school was "very helpful" in career choice counseling increased from 11.2 percent to 18.6 percent. In placement counseling, the percent who responded in the "very helpful" category almost doubled. Despite the improvement in counseling during the past five years, most seniors say they have not received enough information concerning financial aid, and over 80 percent of the seniors rated their career choice counseling and placement counseling as "limited" or non-existent. Clearly, from the students' perspective, the schools could be doing a better job of providing counseling services to students.
Finding and keeping a job are multidimensional tasks that foster care youths discharged to independent living must master. Foster care agencies play critical roles ranging from the development of individualized case plans and skill training to identifying and accessing community resources in helping youths to meet these challenges.
Test-retest reliability, internal consistency, and validity of the Vocational Assessment and Curriculum Guide (VACG) with subjects having different employment characteristics was investigated. The VACG, a behavior rating scale comprised of eight vocational and social skill domains, was designed to assist in the development of employment training programs for persons with mental retardation and other disabilities. Test-retest coefficients ranged from - .69 to .96 (mean = .79). Internal consistency, estimated by coefficient alpha, ranged from .59 to .91 (mean = .76) for VACG domain scores. The alpha coefficient for the total test score was .95. Empirical validation results suggest that domain scores differentiated between subjects with mental retardation having only sheltered work experience and those who were employed successfully in the competitive labor force.

60 patients were subjected to follow-up examination approximately one year after they had suffered initial damage due to acute acoustic trauma and received immediate in-patient therapy, in order to determine loss of hearing and development of tinnitus. The result of the study shows that both improvements in hearing and a disappearance of the tinnitus noise can be observed over the year, this being often closely associated with the noise level in the occupation pursued after in-patient treatment. At the same time, instances of progressive deterioration in hearing were also measured, which were virtually independent of the noise level. It is not possible to predict the development of hearing and tinnitus on the basis of the initial damage due to acoustic trauma.
Adolescents are often overwhelmed and disillusioned by the monumental and momentous task and risk of making a career choice. Adults in general and counselors in particular can assist them not only in being more realistic about their career expectations, but can be especially helpful by encouraging them to develop personal attributes and skills.
