Isokinetic torque imbalances in the rotator cuff of the elite water polo player.

The specific repetitive activity of water polo, like baseball pitching, emphasizes adduction and internal rotation. This study used the Cybex II to evaluate the isokinetic strength of the rotator cuff in elite water polo players and in a group of control subjects. The water polo players were significantly stronger than the controls. Of greater importance was the confirmation of imbalances in the rotator cuff force couples of adduction/abduction and external/internal rotation. These changes are similar to those reported for pitchers. The adductors in the water polo group had gained in relative strength resulting in an increase in the adduction/abduction ratio to about 2:1. The internal rotators had gained in relative strength resulting in a decrease in the external/internal ratio to about 0.6:1. For both force couples the differences are more apparent at a slow speed. Side-to-side differences were not significant.

Charnley low-frictional torque arthroplasty of the hip. 20-to-30 year results.

We reviewed 261 patients with 320 Charnley low-friction arthroplasties who had a mean follow-up of 22 years 10 months (20 to 30). Of these, 93.9% considered the operation to be a success; 82.3% were free from pain and 11.6% had occasional discomfort. Satisfactory function was achieved in 59.6% and 62% had an excellent range of movement. The clinical results did not correlate well with the radiological appearance; radiologically loose components did not affect the clinical outcome. The main long-term problem was wear and loosening of the UHMWPE cup. Our findings suggest that the radiological appearance of the arthroplasty is a more reliable indication of the state of the arthroplasty than the clinical results.

The influence of freezing on the maximum torque capacity of long bones. An experimental study on dogs.

The strength of bone has often been measured in previously frozen samples and the freezing and thawing effect on the strength properties has been considered negligible. By means of a specially constructed torsion machine and a new method for rixing the test bone into the machine, previously frozen bones have been compared to fresh controls. The previously frozen samples were significantly weaker, with an average difference of -- 4.6 per cent.

Uniformity in mechanics of long bones at torque. A dog experiment.

Entire and fresh pairs of tibiae and femora from dogs have been tested with a computerized torsion machine. No differences were observed within the pair for several structural parameters, ensuring a right-left congruence of the load deformation curves of the tested bones.
