Since few non-encapsulated isolates of Trichinella have been studied to date, their level of differentiation from encapsulated species and the taxonomic value of the observed polymorphisms remain to be determined. To this end, biological, biochemical and molecular data from 11 isolates of Trichinella pseudospiralis and one isolate of Trichinella papuae were examined using the broad group of encapsulated species and genotypes for comparison. Single-worm cross-breeding experiments and reproductivity capacity indices revealed F1 progeny only among T. pseudospiralis isolates from different zoogeographical regions, whereas no F1 were produced when T. pseudospiralis was crossed with T. papuae. Furthermore, unlike T. pseudospiralis, T. papuae failed to infect chickens. Comparative analysis of 12 allozymes revealed a single difference between Nearctic and Australian isolates of T. pseudospiralis, but substantial differences when compared with T. papuae (i.e. two unique and six diagnostic markers). Molecular studies involving mitochondrial-derived genes encoding cytochrome oxidase I and the large subunit ribosomal DNA indicated a high level of sequence similarity among T. pseudospiralis isolates; however, a concomitantly high level of variation was observed in expansion segment five of the genomic large subunit ribosomal DNAs among T. pseudospiralis isolates and between this species and T. papuae. Collectively, these results demonstrate high uniformity among isolates of T. pseudospiralis from Eurasia and polymorphism among isolates of T. pseudospiralis belonging to different zoogeographical regions; the results corroborate the classification of T. papuae as a differentiated species.
A total of 1,065 men 60 to 70 years old completed a questionnaire regarding the voiding pattern. At the time of the questionnaire 81 men had already undergone an operation for prostatic hypertrophy (postoperatively queried, group 1) and 29 subsequently underwent an operation (preoperatively queried, group 2). The remaining 955 men were not referred for an operation before March 1987 (healthy, group 3). Approximately a third of the healthy men accepted the symptoms of frequency, post-micturition dribbling and weak stream as not requiring special medical attention, while group 1 men had the same symptom frequency as the untreated men and the symptom frequency was considerably higher in group 2. Post-micturition dribbling was not a specific characteristic of prostatism.

Quantitative analysis of beta-2-microglobulin (beta-2-M) may be a useful test for early diagnosis of acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Even if beta-2-M is an unspecific marker, 96% of 45 patients with confirmed AIDS and 82% of 45 patients with lymphadenopathy have excessive (3 mg/l) beta-2-M value. beta-2-M is also useful in epidemiological studies, especially in subjects in close contact with patients, and in polytransfused hemophiliacs. At last, beta-2-M may be useful as a screening method in blood banks: from a study of 929 sera, excessive beta-2-M value was observed in 16 cases, which were excluded as blood donors.

The prevalence of sexual problems (SP) and sexual satisfaction and their associations with sex-related perceptions and quality of life (QOL) were investigated by interviewing 3257 and 1568 Chinese adults in Hong Kong by a specially designed computerized telephone-interviewing method. SP was prevalent among male (50.9%) and female (54%) respondents; approximately 50% were dissatisfied with their sexual life. Of respondents, 23.9% of men and 5.9% of women perceived sex as important and 52.5% for men and 33.8% of women reported adequate sexual knowledge. The prevalence of SP ranged from 3.4% (pain) to 29.7% (premature orgasm) for men and 6.9% (anxiety) to 24.7% (lack of interest) for women. Prevalence of erectile and lubrication problems were 9.6 and 23.6%, respectively. Sex-related knowledge, perceived importance of sex, perceived physical health status, sexual satisfaction were predictors of SP. Gender differences and strong cultural influences appear to exist. Moreover, SP and sexual satisfaction were associated with mental health and vitality QOL and overall life satisfaction.
The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of popular Japanese alcoholic beverages on blood pressure. We performed a cross-sectional study on 4335 Japanese male workers using baseline data from an intervention study. We defined six groups according to the type of alcoholic beverage that provided two-thirds of the subject's total alcohol consumption: beer, sake (rice wine), shochu (traditional Japanese spirits), whiskey, wine and others. The partial regression coefficients of daily alcohol intake (1 drink=11.5 g of ethanol) to systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were 0.87(P<0.001, standard error (s.e.)=0.09) and 0.77(P<0.001, s.e.=0.06), respectively. A comparison among the types of alcoholic beverages mainly consumed revealed significant differences in SBP and DBP. Both SBP and DBP were highest in the shochu group. However, an analysis of covariance adjusting for total alcohol consumption resulted in the disappearance of these differences. Although after adjustment for total alcohol consumption, the shochu group exhibited a significant positive association with 'high-normal blood pressure or greater' (odds ratio 1.43, 95% confidence interval 1.06-1.95) compared with the beer group, this significant relation disappeared after adjusting for the body mass index (BMI), urinary sodium and potassium excretion. The pressor effect, per se, of popular Japanese alcoholic beverages on blood pressure may not be different among the types of alcoholic beverages after adjusting for other lifestyle factors.
