Assessment of depression in mentally retarded adolescents.

The performance of 25 mentally retarded and 25 normal IQ adolescents was investigated on self-report and informant versions of three childhood depression measures. These measures included the Children's Depression Inventory, the Bellevue Index of Depression, and the Reynolds Child Depression Scale. Adolescents with mild to severe levels of mental retardation were studied. Strong correlations between total scores of measures were found. Analyses of variance comparing mentally retarded and intellectually average adolescents differed significantly only on the Bellevue Index of Depression. Finally, the relationship between self-report and informant versions of these measures were correlated, with mixed results. Implications for the use of these scales in assessing depression of mentally retarded adolescents are discussed.

Families of children with mental retardation: comprehensive view from an epidemiologic perspective.

Data covering a 15-year period on the health, behavior, and functioning of a representative population of families of children with mental retardation and comparison children were used in cluster analysis to obtain relatively homogeneous groupings of families. Only a small minority of families of children with mental retardation did not cluster together with comparison families. More than a third functioned well and had a middle-class orientation; less than a third functioned poorly. A few clusters had ambiguous configurations, but most were easily understood and conformed generally to expectations in validation analyses.

Assessing the loneliness of workers with mental retardation.

This study was designed to determine whether a reliable instrument could be developed to measure the loneliness experienced by workers with mental retardation. In addition, supervisors were asked to rate subjects on loneliness and four other behavioral subtypes in order to determine whether there was a relation between these ratings and the loneliness questionnaire. Three groups of subjects were assessed: persons with mild, moderate, and severe mental retardation. Results indicated that the Worker Loneliness Questionnaire was a reliable instrument for use with persons with mild and moderate mental retardation. In addition, the results showed that some individuals were lonely; however, this was not a pervasive feeling. The implications for measuring the self-perceptions of individuals with mental retardation were discussed.

Off the map: a critical geography of intellectual disabilities.

A "critical geography of intellectual disabilities" is outlined. Drawing on personal experience and borrowing poetic inspiration, claims about the end of the institutional era for intellectual disabled people are disputed, and the continuing eugenic legacy, complete with its multiple stigmatizing effects, is emphasized. The extent of the social exclusion experienced by many people with intellectual disabilities in the wider community, linked to various poor quality of life indicators, is also given attention. Finally, speculations are raised about how to move beyond the "asylum" and the "ghetto", empowering intellectually disabled people in the process.
