Patients' clinical notes made at review appointments following removal of third molars under a general anaesthetic at five Mersey Hospitals have been compared with those formed from the recording of the findings of preselected tasks. Consistent high quality retrievable records were achieved using the preselected task forms, superior to those formed on blank paper.
Sympathetic nerve fibres innervating the sweat glands in the skin are known to accompany sensory nerve fibres closely. Examination of sudorific function, therefore, is a useful aid in making a diagnosis of severed peripheral nerve and also provides valuable information on nerve function in the recovery stage following injury and surgery such as neurorrhaphy. Among the many methods which have been used clinically, the one employing bromphenol blue is thought to be the most simple and accurate.

A major landmark on the palm, the t triradius, is usually found near the wrist. Much interest centres on the fact that it is sometimes found to be central in the palm. It is suggested that, during embryonic development, the t triradius migrates from a position in the centre of the palm to arrive near the wrist. According to this hypothesis, those cases where t triradius remained in the centre of the palm would represent arrests of development. This might explain the association of certain chromosome abnormalities with a t triradius in the centre of the palm.
A correlation between testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) exists in seminal plasma. These androgens play a role in sperm maturation. The T/DHT ratio is different from one person to the other, due to the heterogenicity of seminal plasma which stems for the most part from the male accessory sex glands, the prostate and seminal vesicles, and also from the 'epididymo-testicular unit'. This ratio is useful in identifying the person's semen. Consequently, the steroid values from assailant semen or accused persons and semen on the victim's clothes are of cardinal importance in matching. The results reported include data on the validation of this technique as a tool for semen identification. Coital and masturbated semen were correlated, and consecutive coital semen were also analysed. It may be concluded that the T/DHT value is specific for each person.

This study surveyed nutrition education materials which are low in cost, brief and the type most used in patient education to determine which might be useful with low literacy clients. Readability of 209 pamphlets from professional health organizations, commercial organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions was assessed using three different tests. Using the Flesch and Raygor tests, materials from educational institutions had significantly lower reading levels than materials from professional organizations and government agencies. No significant differences were seen among the sources using the Fry test. Sixty-eight percent (142) of the publications were written at ninth grade level or higher. Eleven percent (24) scored at sixth grade or below on either the Fry or Raygor scale. Only two publications were written at the third grade level. Many of the publications reviewed can be read and understood by many Americans, but there were few for the millions that have limited literacy skills.
The pursuit of prescriptive authority is a priority on the legislative agenda of nurse practitioners nationwide. This article describes the legal avenues that have been used by nurse practitioners in 35 states to obtain prescriptive authority. Because prescriptive authority is state regulated, the legislative process for obtaining prescriptive authority differs from state to state. A step by step outline is provided to guide the nurse practitioner through the legislative process from the initial planning stages to the time when a bill is introduced to the state legislature and the follow through until it becomes law.

Development of new and more reliable methods to immobilise biomolecules has emerged rapidly due to a continuous need for more stable, sensitive and reliable biosensors. This paper reports a new method of acetylcholine-esterase (AChE) immobilisation based on the high affinity interaction between the glycoproteic enzyme and Concanavalin A (Con A). In order to establish the nature of the link formed between the glycoenzyme, lectin and support, three different configurations are presented. The optimum immobilisation procedure was further used for biosensor manufacturing. The non-specific adsorption is around 3% and the chemical cross-linking of the proteins is avoided. The optimised method allows loading of the working electrode surface with different amounts of enzyme ranging from 0.3 to 3.3 mIU with a good operational stability. The sensor showed a linear response range to acetylthiocholine substrate between 10 and 110 micromol l(-1) with a sensitivity of 3.6 mA l mol(-1). The applicability of the method to the detection of organophosphorus insecticides resulted in a detection limit of 10(-8) mol l(-1) for chlorpyriphos.
This paper is concerned with an investigation of electron transfer between cytochrome P450scc (CYP11A1) and gold nanoparticles immobilised on rhodium-graphite electrodes. Thin films of gold nanoparticles were deposited onto the rhodium-graphite electrodes by drop casting. Cytochrome P450scc was deposited onto both gold nanoparticle modified and bare rhodium-graphite electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry indicated enhanced activity of the enzyme at the gold nanoparticle modified surface. The role of the nanoparticles in mediating electron transfer to the cytochrome P450scc was verified using ac impedance spectroscopy. Equivalent circuit analysis of the impedance spectra was performed and the values of the individual components estimated. On addition of aliquots of cholesterol to the electrolyte bioelectrocatalytic reduction currents were obtained. The sensitivity of the nanoparticle modified biosensor to cholesterol was 0.13 microA microM-1 in a detection range between 10 and 70 microM of cholesterol. This confirms that gold nanoparticles enhance electron transfer to the P450scc when present on the rhodium-graphite electrodes.
