Depressed selenium and Vitamin E levels may contribute to hepatic injury through lipid peroxidation. To study the effect of moderate alcohol drinking (32.4 +/- 23.6 g ethanol/d) on serum selenium and serum vitamin E concentrations, we conducted a matched-pair study of 73 healthy, well-nourished risk drinkers and healthy controls with little or no alcohol consumption. Among risk drinkers, serum selenium was significantly lowered (1.49 vs 1.67 mumol/L; p < 0.001) compared with controls. Difference in alpha-tocopherol concentrations did not, however, reach statistical significance (22.8 vs 24.9 mumol/L; p = 0.06). Nutritional and life-style factors differed very little between the two groups. We conclude that even moderate alcohol consumption lowers selenium status. Selenium may thus represent a link joining the hepatotoxic and nutritional backgrounds of alcoholic liver disease.
BACKGROUND: We assumed that persons with a Russian/Soviet cultural background have a more skeptical attitude towards psychotherapy than persons with a German background because of the poor distribution of psychotherapy and the knowledge about this kind of treatment in Russia. METHODS: We compared the views of Russian probands (n=40), Russian migrants living in Germany (n=65) and German probands (n=70) with the "Questionnaire on Attitudes towards Psychotherapeutic Treatment" (QAPT). For the study of the Russian probands we translated the questionnaire into the Russian language. RESULTS: The psychometric examination predominantly suggests the quality of the Russian version of the QAPT. Russian probands showed a more skeptical attitude towards psychotherapy compared to the German probands. The migrants had a tendentially more negative attitude than the Germans and a more positive attitude than the Russians. However, we could not determine any differences concerning the anticipated social acceptance regarding participation in psychotherapy. DISCUSSION: The results suggest the relevance of culture-specific factors in psychotherapy and an increased need for information of persons with a Russian/Soviet cultural background about psychotherapy.
Allele frequencies for the autosomal tetranucleotide short tandem repeat loci D4S2366, D6S474, D14S608, D19S246, D20S480, D21S226 and D22S689 were investigated in a sample of 189 unrelated German individuals using a multiplex polymerase chain reaction approach. The loci showed no significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium except for D14S608. All genotyped alleles were cloned and sequenced, and an allelic nomenclature consistent with the ISFH recommendations was defined.

The developing immunity of sheep to Trichostrongylus colubriformis infections was described by a mathematical function. The rate of adult establishment was assumed to be a measure of the host's acquired immunity to this parasite. Prediction of establishment from infection rate and host age was used to estimate worm burden, worm rejection and arrested development.

The percentage of E rosette forming cells amounted to 26% of the blood lymphocytes and 34% of the spleen cells in German Landrace pigs. 10% of the live lymphocytes in the peripheral blood and 22% of the spleen cells were EAC rosette forming cells. The number of E rosettes could be increased by treatment of sheep erythrocytes with neuraminidase. The number of lymphoid cells reacting with protein A in the peripheral blood and in the spleen of pigs correlated well with the number of EAC rosette forming cells. The mitogens phytohemagglutinin (PHA), concanavalin A (Con A) and pokeweed mitogen (PWM) are potent stimulators of pig lymphoid cells. The mitogenic stimulation of pig lymphocytes could not be influenced significantly by the removal of phagocytic cells. By neuraminidase treatment the mitogen induced stimulation rate was decreased. For the mitogenic stimulation of porcine lymphoid cells in the presence of PHA, Con A and PWM T cells were required. Bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) stimulated only B cells to a small degree.
The corticosteroid effect on circulating lymphocytes in a steroid-sensitive species (rat) was studied by immunofluorescence. Both normal and neonatally thymectomized animals were injected with a high dose of prednisolone. T- and B-lymphocytes as well as T-lymphocyte subsets were analyzed in thoracic duct lymph during the involution phase (3 h after injection) and the restitution phase (17 h after injection) using conventional and monoclonal antisera. Neonatal thymectomy significantly reduced the number of circulating T-helper and T-non helper cells. In the involution phase, after a corticosteroid injection, there was a 64% reduction of lymph cell content in normal rats, affecting both T- and B-lymphocytes. Thymectomized animals showed an even more pronounced disappearance of cells. Counted in percentage, more B- than T-lymphocytes disappeared from the circulation. The T-non helper cells disappeared to a greater extent than the T-helper cells did. Cells with Ia-antigen showed about the same values as the B-lymphocytes. During the restitution phase all cells types were restored to normal levels. It seems that a high prednisolone dose has a more pronounced effect on the circulation of B- than of T-lymphocytes, and the T-non helper cells are probably more sensitive than the T-helper subpopulation. These data support the hypothesis that a major corticosteroid effect is a trapping and redistribution of circulating lymphocytes, more pronounced for certain cell types.
