[Preparation of optically active succinic acid derivatives. III. Regioselective condensation reactions of optically active 2-substituted succinic acids with diimidazolide].

We investigated the large scale synthesis of monocalcium bis [(2S)-2-benzyl-3-(cis-hexahydroisoindolin-2-ylcarbonyl) propionate] dihydrate (KAD-1229), which has a potent hypoglycemic effect, in a single reaction vessel. (2S)-2-Benzyl-3-(cis-hexahydroisoindolin-2-ylcarbonyl) propionic acid (7) was directly obtainable from (S)-2-benzylsuccinic acid (2) and cis-hexahydroisoindoline (4), without the isolation of intermediates by the method using thionyldiimidazole (9) and/or diimidazolide of the acid 2. Sequential reaction of imidazole with thionyl chloride, 2, and 4, followed by acid catalyzed hydrolysis gave amidecarboxylic acid 7 in 86% overall yield. The acid 7 was treated with 2 N NaOH, followed by the treatment with calcium chloride to give KAD-1229 in 91% yield.

Deriving inherent optical properties from water color: a multiband quasi-analytical algorithm for optically deep waters.

For open ocean and coastal waters, a multiband quasi-analytical algorithm is developed to retrieve absorption and backscattering coefficients, as well as absorption coefficients of phytoplankton pigments and gelbstoff. This algorithm is based on remote-sensing reflectance models derived from the radiative transfer equation, and values of total absorption and backscattering coefficients are analytically calculated from values of remote-sensing reflectance. In the calculation of total absorption coefficient, no spectral models for pigment and gelbstoff absorption coefficients are used. Actually those absorption coefficients are spectrally decomposed from the derived total absorption coefficient in a separate calculation. The algorithm is easy to understand and simple to implement. It can be applied to data from past and current satellite sensors, as well as to data from hyperspectral sensors. There are only limited empirical relationships involved in the algorithm, and they are for less important properties, which implies that the concept and details of the algorithm could be applied to many data for oceanic observations. The algorithm is applied to simulated data and field data, both non-case1, to test its performance, and the results are quite promising. More independent tests with field-measured data are desired to validate and improve this algorithm.

High-accuracy measurement of the optical transmittance of optical bulk materials at deep-ultraviolet wavelengths.

A measurement setup that is capable of measuring the internal transmittance of fused-silica prisms at 193 nm with a precision better than 0.01%/cm (3sigma) is presented. Its application to materials and wavelengths other than those that were chosen here for demonstration is straightforward. A lack of any standards makes it impossible to determine the absolute accuracy (also called measurement uncertainty) experimentally; however, calculations indicate that it is almost within the same margin as the precision.

Germania-glass-core silica-glass-cladding modified chemical-vapor deposition optical fibers: optical losses, photorefractivity, and Raman amplification.

Germania-glass-core silica-glass-cladding single-mode fibers (deltan as great as 0.143) with a minimum loss of 20 dB/km at 1.85 microm were fabricated by modified chemical-vapor deposition. The fibers exhibit strong photorefractivity, with type IIa index modulation of 2 x 10(-3). A Raman gain of 300 dB/(kmW) was determined at 1.12 microm. Only 3 m of such fibers is sufficient for constructing the 10-W Raman laser at 1.12 microm with a 13-W pump at 1.07 microm.

Optical selectivity in optically dense media driven by optimized Gaussian-type ultrashort pulse pairs.

We theoretically demonstrate that selective resonant excitation can be achieved in a dense collection of V-type three-level atoms by optimizing the pulse delay and peak intensity ratio of an applied phase-tailored ultrashort pulse pair. Near-dipole-dipole interaction plays an important role in the quantum control of selective excitations since it brings about an intrinsic frequency shift in the atomic resonance, which builds up various excitation pathways. As a consequence, we can control the quantum interference between various pathways by shaping the excitation pulse pair to steer the atomic excitation selectively toward a desired quantum state.

Effect of an optical negative index thin film on optical bistability.

We investigate nonlinear transmission in a layered structure consisting of a slab of positive index material with Kerr-type nonlinearity and a subwavelength layer of linear negative index material (NIM) sandwiched between semi-infinite linear dielectrics. We find that a thin layer of NIM leads to significant changes in the hysteresis width when the nonlinear slab is illuminated at an angle near that of total internal reflection. Unidirectional diodelike transmission with enhanced operational range is demonstrated. These results may be useful for NIMs characterization and for designing novel NIMs-based devices.
