Influence of tubule orientation on cone-shaped texture development in laser-ablated dentin.

In the present paper, the influence of tubule orientation on surface texture development was studied. Specimens of dentin with a wide range of tubule orientations were extracted from caries-free human teeth, processed using KrF laser radiation, and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. When a transverse cross section of dentin cut perpendicularly to the tooth axis is processed with KrF laser radiation, a cone-like topography develops in the inner dentin where tubules are parallel to the laser beam. When laser processing is carried out in the outer dentin, because tubules are significantly tilted with respect to the laser beam, flat surfaces are achieved. The surface texture after laser processing depends effectively on the angle between the tubules and the laser beam. The dependency of cone growth on tubule orientation was confirmed using a simple differential ablation model.

Micro flow-through PCR in a PMMA chip fabricated by KrF excimer laser.

As the third PCR technology, micro flow-through PCR chip can amplify DNA specifically in an exponential fashion in vitro. Nowadays many academies in the world have successfully amplified DNA using their own-made flow-through PCR chip. In this paper, the ablation principle of PMMA at 248 nm excimer laser was studied, then a PMMA based flow-through PCR chip with 20 cycles was fabricated by excimer laser at 19 kv and 18 mm/min. The chip was bonded together with another cover chip at 105( composite function)C, 160 N and 20 minutes. In the end, it was integrated with electrical thermal thin films and Pt 100 temperature sensors. The temperature controllers was built standard PID digital temperature controller, the temperature control precision was +/- 0.2( composite function)C. The temperature grads between the three temperature zones were 16.5 and 22.2( composite function)C respectively, the gaps between the temperature zones could realize heat insulation.

An interactive software for 81mKr pulmonary ventilation gating.

An interactive software to gate scintigraphic list-mode data collected from ventilation studies using a radioisotope of an inert gas (81mKr) has been developed. It allows the detection of end expiration and end inspiration phases in a time activity curve. It involves six phases: filtering of the curve; preselection of local extrema; validation of the preselection; choice of the parameters for the reconstruction; control of the selected cycles and display of parameters such as frequency, expiration time, breath amplitude; reconstruction of images representing the distribution of ventilation during a mean respiratory cycle. This software was tested on 116 data sets without a failure. The interactive definition and control of the selected times made the algorithm useful regardless of the count rate and the frequency. It could be adapted to gate other periodic or semiperiodic physiological phenomena.

The effect of aerosol charge on the deposition and clearance of TiO2 particles in rats.

A titanium dioxide aerosol when generated by a Wright dust feed will have a higher electrostatic charge by a factor of 5.5 than one which has been discharged by a bipolar ion field produced by a 7.5 mCi 85Kr source. The deposition of particles in the lung of rats was lower by approximately 21% when an aerosol discharger was used. Particle clearance from the lung alveoli was not affected by the use of the discharger.

Health effects of airborne effluents released from the nuclear cycle.

Current trends in regulations governing radioactive release from the nuclear cycle and their relationship with population dose and population health damage evaluation are discussed. It is shown that, at least in some cases, current methods may not grant a correct population-dose evaluation. A procedure to better evaluate population doses from gaseous effluents is outlined. It leads to a very simple first approximation expression which is independent of the dispersion area. Two examples, 85Kr and 222Rn, are worked out in order to give first-order evaluations of the population-dose commitment and the related risk. Strong discrepancies between the results and current evaluations are found and discussed.
