Estimates of the prevalence of deviant behaviour, which are based on the usual survey methods are by far too low. Therefore, the use of capture-recapture methods or of the truncated Poisson distribution is to be preferred, provided appropriate data are available. Here an extended Poisson approach was applied in order to estimate the number of users of hard illegal drugs (heroin, cocaine) in Switzerland for each year from 1990 to 1993. These estimates indicate an increase by about 50% during the period 1990-1993.

The incidence rate for primary liver cancer (PLC) was investigated in the Health Unit of Brescia (about 325,000 inhabitants), North Italy, in the 5-year period 1986-90, in order to ascertain whether there was a high risk for developing the disease in the area as suggested by mortality data. A total of 349 incident cases were observed (male: female ratio = 3.4: 1), of which 182 (52.1%) were diagnosed through histology. The cumulative risk was about 5% and 1% in males and females, respectively. The crude incidence rates were 34.5/100,000 in males and 9.4/100,000 in females, and the age-standardized rates were the highest among all those observed in the 9 Italian areas covered by Cancer Registries. Although about half of the cases in males can be attributed to either chronic alcoholic disease or HBV infection or both, further research is needed to investigate the role of known risk factors for PLC in the Health Unit.
A random sample of 805 people aged 65 or more were interviewed in their homes in England about the drugs they were taking, and about their experiences with and views about the way drugs were prescribed. Assessments by a pharmacologist and pharmacists identified inappropriate prescribing and labelling and revealed the extent of elderly people's knowledge of their drugs. Information obtained from general practitioners, with the consent of the elderly people, showed that over a third of the elderly people were taking prescribed drugs of which their physician was unaware, but over four-fifths of the drugs reported by both patients and physicians were thought by both groups to be taken appropriately or as prescribed. The processes and problems of drug utilization and drug prescribing are demonstrated by approaching both patients and physicians and further illuminated by the expertise of pharmacologist and pharmacist.

The material was presented during a symposium on "Mother-Baby joint admission for mental health care in different countries" at the Marcé Society International Biennial Scientific Meeting in Sydney (Australia) in 2002 (25-27 September 2002). The introduction stresses the main contribution of each of the six papers. It discusses the general context of perinatal psychiatry and offers guidelines for perinatal health care.
