[Effects of work at video displays on the state of the nervous system].

Videodisplay users were compared with reference group in nervous system state, length of service (under 5 years, 5-10 years, 10 years and more) during prospective observation. The comparison demonstrated reliably high and occupationally induced risk of vegetative dysfunctions. The authors defined correlation of the risk with exposure to 2-400 kHz magnetic fields.

Time factors in VDT-induced myopia and visual fatigue: an experimental study.

In an experimental design with two matched groups (n = 13 and n = 17) working 2 and 4 hr respectively, followed by a 15-min restitution time, the study examined the effect of continuous VDT work on 1) visual acuity, refraction and oculomotor functions (ZCSV: zone of clear, single vision) and 2) the effect of 15-min restitution time on the oculomotor functions (ZCSV). In both groups there were a significant reduction in visual acuity, refraction changes in myopic direction and reduced ciliar and vergence muscle capacity. The ZCSV changes were temporary and a 15-min restitution period restored approximately half of the ZCSV changes. There were no significant differences between 2 or 4 hr of VDT work on any of the variables examined.

Noise in multiple-workstation open-plan computer rooms: measurements and annoyance.

Computers in the workplace have become very prevalent. As with the introduction of any new technology, unanticipated problems often develop. Noise in open-plan computer rooms and annoyance and perceived deterioration in performance associated with it also appears to be a problem that may be similarly categorized. An experimental investigation was undertaken as a result of frequent user complaints about the difficulty of concentrating and performing their work in the computer rooms of a large service organization. Two typical computer rooms were investigated. Noise levels were measured at random times during the working hours. The noise spectrum was found to be almost similar in both facilities. The 10-second A-weighted noise level for all frequencies ranged between 53 and 62 dB. Most noise energy was either in the high-frequency bands (above 2,000 Hz) or low-frequency bands (below 500 Hz). The highest noise energy levels were recorded at 8,000 Hz (between 64 and 73 dB). Least noise energy levels were recorded between 500 and 2,000 Hz (between 35 and 44 dB). The noise spectrum, thus, was substantially different from those of open-plan offices. Eighty-nine percent of the users questioned indicated their tasks required concentration. Fifty percent of all respondents rated the noise level between extremely annoying and unbearable and intolerable (scale values between 22 and 25 on a 25-point scale; 1 being noticeable but not objectionable and 25 being unbearable and intolerable); 10% of the respondents considered the noise very annoying; 20% of the respondents considered the noise levels moderately annoying; the remaining respondents did not seem to have a major problem. Conversational sound and computer-printer beeping sounds were reported to be most annoying by 90% of the respondents who considered the noise levels annoying. Constant arrival and departure of users, sound from keyboards, and ventilation equipment also appeared to be major contributing factors.

[VDT and work: descriptive epidemiologic research].

We report the statistical elaboration of some data pertinent to a population of workers professionally exposed to VDT. These first data also confirm that the length of the use of VDT doesn't influence the judgement of fitness to work.

The effects of a typing task on the hand volume of the older worker.

UNLABELLED: Few studies have examined the relationship between changes in hand volume and typing. Volumetric evaluation documents the presence of an inflammatory response to activity. METHOD: To study this relationship, researchers used a convenience sample of 31 participants who were aged 45 and older and worked full time where they typed at least one hour per day. Volumetric measurements were taken before a 15-minute typing activity, immediately after and 10 minutes after typing. Before typing, ergonomic adjustments were made to computer workstations, when necessary. Participants typed using an advanced speed test of the Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing program, which calculated adjusted words per minute. RESULTS: The data showed no significant (F = 0.321, p > 0.05) change in hand volume resulting from the typing activity. CONCLUSION: The amount of exercise provided in this study, a fifteen minute typing activity, did not result in changed hand volume.

[Work with visual demands. Assumption of responsibility for optical correction by the employer].

Comparison of visual demands of work in a traditional office to those of work in an office equiped with a screen. Description of problems of vision when focusing the eye to various distances and fixing it in various directions. Range of possibilities for optical correction for work with a screen (monofocal, bifocal, progressive or for reading), specifying among the optical corrections those which are exclusively reserved for this activity and should become the employer's responsibility.

[Methodical basis for creation of the military telemedicine system in the Russian Federation Armed Forces].

Today the telemedicine (TM) is the perspective and rapidly developing direction in the health service. It also concerns the military medicine. In the RF Armed Forces' interests the work on creation of military telemedicine system within the framework of experimental-and-designers' work "Telemed" is conducted. During the development of software to realize the functions of military telemedicine system and to provide the development of its functional potentials the work was done connected with problem description in order to realize all medical technologies for each direction of its application. To solve this problem there are enough specialists in the field of computer and informative technologies capable of bringing the diagnostic and consultation possibilities of district (naval) and Central Military Hospitals as well as republican and regional centers closer to the solution of medical problems of distant garrisons.

[Results of a complex evaluation of accommodative asthenopia in using different-design video monitors].

Eighty volunteer computer operators were examined experimentally under the conditions of working with different-type video monitors, i.e. electron-beam (EB), liquid-crystal (LC), including different visual loads (typing, computer games, and gaze fixation). Experiments lasted for as long as 6 hours. The absolute accommodation volume (AAV), relative accommodation reserve (RAR) and ergograms were comparatively evaluated. A lower AAV was registered in all types of visual loads under the conditions of using different-type monitors, and it made up 0.27-1.08 diopters. A maximum reduction of AAV was detected for gaze fixation and while working with liquid-crystal monitors. The RAR reduction ranged from 0.31 to 0.63 diopters. A maximum RAR reduction was noted for gaze fixation and while using the electronic-beam monitors. The nature of changed ergography curves occurred within the interval between I and IIb types of ergograms. In case of typing, the ergogram deviations were registered to a greater extent for the liquid-crystal monitors. The value of deviations for computer games was bigger, at the experiment end, for EB rather than for LC.

[RSI-repetitive strain injury--a work-related disease?].

It is not scientifically proven that problems in the neck, shoulder, arm and hand which patients complain of after repetitive activities at work, are due to structural damage caused by physical stress at the workplace. As a consequence, from the orthopedic point of view, RSI cannot be accepted as a work-related disease.
