The existence of reliable negative connection between the threshold of nervous-muscle excitability and the short-term motor activity defined in the shuttle box is demonstrated in 7 inbred strains of mice: C57Br/cdJ, SEC/1ReJ, BALB/cJ, DBA/2J, CBA/J, C57BL/6J, C3H/HeJ by means of comparative genetic and correlation analyses. Based on the experimental data, arguments are given that the excitability of nervous-muscle apparatus is connected not only with the motor activity itself, but with the orientation-exploring reaction, which takes place under unknown situation at the very beginning of the experiment. The comparison of the results obtained with the literary data leads to the conclusion about the existence of a positive correlation between excitability and viability to learning.
From times immemorial, music closely associating with magic, played a significant part in the art of healing and in religion itself. It is not an invention of modern technical age and today it is legitimately involved in the overall rehabilitation programms in psychiatry. We have therefore attempted to conduct a study on this subject. The present investigation compares the behaviour of 100 alcoholics and 100 patients with neurotic personality disturbances drawn from the catchment areas of the Psychiatric University Clinic Vienna/Austria and the Anton-Proksch-Institut in Vienna-Kalksburg with regard to their respone to this type of therapy. We found that music provides a substantial contribution in reinforcing the basic ethical concept of the person concerned. It also breaks the barriere of expressivity by enriching the pool fo potential vocabulary. It appears to be the ideal medium of free communication. Investigation has to be continued, but music therapy will never develop from an ancilliary treatment into a therapeutic method in its own right. However, the music therapist should be prepared if necessary to allow for useful deviations from the traditional lines of musical concepts in his efforts to reduce the state of anxiety in his patients and prevent further deterioration instinct and traditional values, thus strengthening the ethical concept.

A total of 419 students in the first half of their curriculum (243 medical students, 39 engineering students, 36 sociology students and 101 law students) replied to a self-administered questionnaire during autumn 1988 and spring 1989. The questionnaire was concerned with health and included, among other things, their attitudes to doctors' health behaviour. The objects of the questionnaire were 1) to reveal the number of restrictive students who consider that doctors should show a good example as regards health behaviour e.g. as regards smoking, alcohol consumption, diet and physical exercise), 2) to characterize the social profiles of the restrictive students, 3) to assess whether the attitudes and behaviour are in agreement and 4) to assess whether the proportion of restrictive medical students differs from the other students. The result of the questionnaire reveals that 44.4% of all the students were restrictive. The social profiles of these students showed a slight difference from those of the non-restrictive students but only as regards variables related to health behaviour. No difference was found in the degree of restrictiveness in medical students and the remaining students. In addition, the investigation revealed that there was only a slight association between attitudes to doctors' health behaviour and their own health behaviour.

Housing conditions of companion animals are often not adequate to animal welfare. This is caused by a generally negative attitude towards animals in the public, combined with a lack of knowledge about the normal behaviour and the animals demands towards their environment. In the interest of animal welfare, measures are needed which could help to improve the attitude towards animals by the general public. A further aim should be to provide a better knowledge about the needs of animals in the group of persons owning animals as well as persons planning to buy one in the future. Essential improvements in the housing conditions of dogs and cats can be expected by a more intense engagement of veterinarians in behaviour therapy. Individual points of this thematic will be discussed, suggestions as well as advice for the improvement of work will be introduced.
