Technical advances in penile prostheses.

Despite the introduction of oral phosphodiesterase inhibitors, penile prostheses continue to be an important form of treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED). Penile prostheses are associated with high satisfaction rates due to their ease of use, reliability, and ability to provide excellent rigidity. Advances over the last decade include steps to reduce mechanical failures and surface coatings to prevent prosthetic infections. These advances make the penile prosthesis an excellent option for the treatment of ED, particularly for men who fail oral therapy.

Lumbar interbody fusion: state-of-the-art technical advances. Invited submission from the Joint Section Meeting on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves, March 2004.

During the past few decades, three techniques have been used to achieve circumferential lumbar interbody fusion (LIF). They include posterior LIF, anterior LIF with supplemental posterior fixation, and transforaminal LIF. In this article, the authors describe the indications and contraindications for the use of interbody fusion. The advantages and disadvantages of each will be discussed in detail. Additionally, strategies for minimally invasive access and options for interbody spacer materials will be discussed.

Telemedicine consultations in congenital heart disease: assessment of advanced technical capabilities.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of adding remote pointer and dynamic display capabilities to a telemedicine system designed to provide consultative services for patients with congenital heart disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Independent observations by the referring physician and the consulting physician provided the data for the assessment. Fifty-four teleconsultations involving 38 patients with 21 different congenital heart diseases were analyzed. The teleconsultations were based on previously obtained cineangiograms that were digitized and then transmitted by combined satellite and terrestrial-based technology. The observations, recorded by each physician at his workstation at the time of each teleconsultation, were summarized and analyzed statistically. RESULTS: In 108 observations, the pointer was believed to be helpful in 72 (67%), and dynamic display was helpful in 96 (89%). CONCLUSION: This study suggests that use of a pointer and dynamic display enhances teleconsultations for patients with congenital heart disease.

A review of technical advances in virtual colonoscopy.

Early detection of polyps has proven to lead to a decrease in incidence of colon cancer. In the past few years, virtual colonoscopy has been developed as a patient-friendly screen-ing technique. The procedure comprises the following steps. First, the patient's colon is cleansed and transanally inflated with air. Subsequently, a 3D image volume is acquired of the abdomen by CT or MRI. Finally, the bowel surface is extracted and visualized, after which the physician virtually navigates through the colon and examines the surface for abnormalities. This paper describes the progress in research for virtual colonoscopy.
