Plasma total homocysteine (p-tHcy), serum folate (s-F), serum vitamin B-12 (s-B12) and plasma pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (p-PLP) were measured in epileptic children before and after a 20-week period of sodium valproate (group A, n=32) and carbamazepine (group B, n=20) monotherapy. P-tHcy significantly increased in both groups, s-F and s-B12 significantly increased in group A, while s-F and p-PLP significantly decreased in group B. Our study showed an early effect of antiepileptic drug treatment on homocysteine metabolism.

Contractile interstitial cells (CIC), the major component of the alveolar septum of the bovine lung are enriched in prostaglandin (PG) F synthase (Fukui, M., Fujimoto, T., Watanabe, K., Endo, K., and Kuno, K. (1996) J. Histochem. Cytochem. 44, 251-257.). The enzyme catalyzes not only the reduction of PGD(2) and PGH(2) but also that of various carbonyl compounds (Watanabe, K., Yoshida, R., Shimizu, T., and Hayaishi, O. (1985) J. Biol. Chem. 260, 7035-7041). Here, we report that retinal (vitamin A-aldehyde) was reduced to retinol (vitamin A-alcohol) dose- and time-dependently by PGF synthase using NADPH as a cofactor. The Km value of PGF synthase for retinal was about 20 microM, a same order to that for PGH(2). The conversion of retinal to retinol was also observed in cultured CIC, as demonstrated by the greenish fluorescence characteristic of retinol. Thus, retinal might be one of the natural substrates for PGF synthase in vivo, and retinol synthesized from retinal in CIC may play physiological and pathological roles in the lungs.
Tests were carried out on pocket mice to ascertain their tolerance to elevated oxygen pressures alone and to a combination of hyperoxta and heat in excess of that expected during the flight of the mice on Apollo XVII. the mice withstood oxygen partial pressures up to 12 pst at normal room temperature (24 degrees C, 75 degrees F) over a period of 7 days. A few mice previously exposed to increased PO2 died in the course of exposure to an oxygen pressure of 10 pst or 12 psi (517 mm or 620 mm Hg) for 13 d in ambient heat of 32 degrees C (90 degrees F). Supplemental vitamin E and physiological saline loading given prior to exposure had no apparent protective effect. The overall conclusion was that the pocket mice which were to go on Apollo XVII could readily survive the ambient atmosphere to which they would be exposed.

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia is caused by several factors. Avoidance of bronchopulmonary dysplasia is directed at its causes and should always attempt the rapid weaning of the patient from the respirator. Some of the preventive measures include a) avoiding an oxygen injury; b) prevention of barotrauma; 3) sufficient moisturization and warming of the respiratory gases; d) regular cleaning of the respiratory tract and bacterial controls of the tracheal secretion; e) administration of vitamin E; f) reconsideration (restricting the use) of parenteral nutrition. Assistance in the weaning from the respiratory means a) avoidance of an open ductus arteriosus; b) paced reduction of FiO2, respiratory pressure and frequency up to intermittent mandatory ventilation and final transition to spontaneous respiration with increased mean respiratory pressure; c) avoidance of cardiac insufficiency; d) administration of corticosteroids; e) theophyllin, and f) physical therapy. The number of patients with bronchopulmonary dysplasia has remained the same in the last six years. However, the mortality until 1979 round about 50% has been reduced to 1/3, in the years 1980/81.
