Inuit write about illness; standing on thin ice.

Although Inuit have a traditional pattern of behaviour for how to die, their culture has not provided a pattern for how to be seriously sick or disabled, since such conditions did not last long in a hunting-gathering society. Tuberculosis provided Canadian Inuit with a harsh and bitter lesson in how to be sick in the twentieth century. The tuberculosis experience is an important part of modern Inuit history and an understanding of how they viewed it goes some way towards explaining some of the attitudes Inuit have toward the health system in the North today. The way Inuit regard illness is evident in their traditional oral literature as well as in more recent written accounts of the disease that devastated their lives only a few decades ago.

[Historical report on the situation of the "fight against tuberculosis" in the town of Halle, Germany, 1899 (author's transl)].

In 1896 the so-called "Department X" of the "Association for Public Welfare" was founded and turned to be the first organisation of the "fight against consumption" in the town of Halle. Under the guidance of PUTTER and REINEBOTH a first dispensary for tuberculous patients was established and became the prototype of similar institutions in Germany and other countries.

[Changes and patterns of drug resistance of mycobacterium tuberculosis in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (by data of the microbiological laboratory of research production association "Phthysiology")].

Changes in and patterns of drug resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis were analyzed in Yakutia. It was shown that in the past 5 years, there had been no rise in the total resistance; however, its patterns changed: a proportion of polyresistant strains had increased with decreases in monoresistant strains. The rate of Mycobacterium tuberculosis resistance to most antituberculous drugs was found to be growing. The pattern of resistance is varying in different areas of Yakutia.

[Significance of activities of a medical sanitary detachment from complex expedition if the USSR Academy of Sciences (1925-1930) in the development of surgical treatment for osteoarticular tuberculosis in Iakutiia].

The paper shows the value of the activities of a medical sanitary detachment from the complex expedition of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1925-1930) in the development of surgical treatment for bone and joint tuberculosis and its sequelae in adults from Yakutia. A total of 981 operations were made from 1951 to 1994. Priorities were given to timely surgical interventions, including radical reparative spinal and joint operations, by using the Ilizarov apparatus.

Evaluation of new anti-infective drugs for the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis. Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Food and Drug Administration.

This guideline addresses the evaluation of new antimycobacterial drugs in the treatment and prevention (secondary prophylaxis) of infection by M. tuberculosis. Patients may be enrolled in clinical trials on the basis of clinical and/or microbiological criteria. A therapeutic regimen will likely include a combination of drugs; a randomized, active-control, comparative clinical trial is recommended. If appropriate samples can be obtained for culture during follow-up without placing the patient at unwarranted risk, the assessment of microbiological outcome is paramount. Prophylaxis will probably require a single drug, and a similar study design is preferred.
