This experiment investigated the reason for disturbances of tooth eruption through hydroxylapatite (HA) granules. HA granules of compact and porous structure were implanted in the pathway of erupting teeth in 14 five-day-old rats. The results demonstrate that the use of this material can result in tooth retention and malformed tooth crowns. Tooth crown malformation can be traced to the formation of ceramo-dentinous complexes which promote bacterial invasion of the pulp cavity, resulting in arrest of the tooth eruption process.

The wall of the pulp cavity, fracture faces and the demineralized surfaces of teeth from larvae and adults of Ambystoma mexicanum were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Calcium and phosphate contents were determined by microanalysis. The apical part of the tooth (crown, tooth apex) contains dentin canals. In the larva, these do not reach the enamel-dentin border but end below this border in front of a denser hard substance, possibly enameloid. The pedicel in the adult and the basal portion of the tooth in the larva (base) are without dentin canals. These parts of the teeth are characterized by longitudinally arranged collagen fibres as visualized on the demineralized surfaces. These observations indicate a congruency in early-larval and adult teeth between base and pedicel as well as apex and crown. This partition is also confirmed by the calcium and phosphate values which were identical in larvae and adults. Highest values are found in enamel and lowest values in the tooth-bearing bone. Calcium and phosphate content show a clear difference between dentin and the basal part of the tooth (pedicel and base). The ring-like dividing zone in the adult tooth is less well mineralized.

Uncomplicated tooth crown fractures are the most common sports-related mouth injury and can have an excellent outcome if treated appropriately. Many times, however, crown fractures occur at the same time as concussion, luxation, displacement, or even avulsion injuries. This article discusses the treatment for and management of tooth crown fractures from sports-related injuries.
Trauma to the teeth can result in the formation of cracks in the crown or root of the tooth. The location and the extent of these cracks determine the proper treatment choice. This treatment is oriented towards saving pulp vitality and/or tooth integrity. In this paper the diagnosis of these cracks is described as well as the desired treatment. These are discussed relative to the location of the cracks, namely in the clinical crown of the tooth, resulting in enamel infraction, cracked tooth and crown fractures, and in the root of the tooth, resulting in a vertical or horizontal root fracture.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present work was to examine some properties of different brands of beer manufactured in Brazil that may be important to oral health. METHODS: Samples from seven different beer brands were analyzed for pH, titratable acidity, calcium and phosphate concentrations. Demineralization experiments were carried out by incubating samples with crown tooth particles (40-80 mesh) at 37 degrees C under agitation (100 strokes/min). RESULTS: The pH was lower than 4.0 for three of the seven samples and higher than 4.0 for the others. The amount of titratable acidity, expressed as the volume of 0.1N NaOH solution consumed to raise the initial pH to 7.0, and the concentrations of calcium and phosphate varied. Calcium concentration ranged from 0.21 to 1.59 micromol/ml, while phosphate concentration varied from 0.048 to 0.094 micromol/ml. Calcium released to the incubation medium was proportional to the time of incubation up to 5min. Maltose, a disaccharide, was detected in all samples studied. CONCLUSION: Differences in the properties examined indicated that some brands of beer studied may have potential dental effects.
Tubercle of Carabelli is a dental morphologic trait found on the mesiopalatal surface of maxillary deciduous second molar and maxillary permanent first molar crowns. Tooth with Tubercle of Carabelli is susceptible to dental caries. Tubercle of Carabelli also interferes with banding techniques during fixed orthodontic therapy. The aim of this study is to determine the distribution of this dental morphologic variation with its forms of expressivity in the maxillary deciduous second molars and maxillary permanent first molars and also to determine the dichotomous nature of this trait. Study models of 648 subjects were evaluated for the presence of the trait and its expression. 67.5% of maxillary deciduous second molars and 52.77% of maxillary permanent first molars displayed the trait. There is predominance among females in the prevalence in the maxillary deciduous second molars. Mild and moderate forms expressed in maxillary deciduous second molars is mostly the same as that of maxillary permanent first molars.
A possible connection has been suggested between strontium and a low prevalence of dental caries. An investigation of this subject was initiated by measuring the strontium content of deciduous teeth by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in different regions in Finland. The material analysed consisted of a total of 2,482 tooth crowns and 392 tooth roots. The results showed that the Sr content of the tooth crowns in northern Finland was about two-fold that in the south, about 400 and 200 mug/gCa, respectively. The difference was apparently caused by corresponding differences in dietary strontium. The tooth roots contained much more Sr than the crowns, about 600 and 200 mug/gCa, respectively, in southern Finland, presumably owing to changes occurring in the dietary habits of the child during the development of the crowns and roots of the deciduous teeth.
Tooth loss due to periodontal disease, dental caries, trauma, or a variety of genetic disorders continues to affect most adults adversely at some time in their lives. A biological tooth substitute that could replace lost teeth would provide a vital alternative to currently available clinical treatments. To pursue this goal, we dissociated porcine third molar tooth buds into single-cell suspensions and seeded them onto biodegradable polymers. After growing in rat hosts for 20 to 30 weeks, recognizable tooth structures formed that contained dentin, odontoblasts, a well-defined pulp chamber, putative Hertwig's root sheath epithelia, putative cementoblasts, and a morphologically correct enamel organ containing fully formed enamel. Our results demonstrate the first successful generation of tooth crowns from dissociated tooth tissues that contain both dentin and enamel, and suggest the presence of epithelial and mesenchymal dental stem cells in porcine third molar tissues.
OBJECTIVE: This paper observed the clinical effect of Vita In-Ceram glass-infiltrated ceramic restorations. METHOD: A total of 194 restorations (124 maxillary and 70 mandibular prostheses) made with Vita In-Ceram glass-infiltrated ceramic were examined in 45 patients. There were 165 anterior tooth crowns, 21 posterior tooth crowns, and 8 FPDs. Surface, color, anatomic form, and marginal integrity of restorations were assessed at 3 months, 6 months, 1 year and 2 years after cementation with the California Dental Association (CDA) quality assessment evaluation system. RESULTS: It showed that the marginal fitness, color stability and strength of crowns were considered to be satisfactory. Only 0.01% (two crowns) were not acceptable. Two FPDs were not acceptable at 6-month visit, however, the anterior FPDs were considered to be satisfactory. CONCLUSION: It is possible to constructexcellent all-ceramic prostheses with the Vita In-Ceram glass-infiltrated ceramic system.
A preliminary CAD system to design the inner and outer shape of crown prosthesis was developed using the data of 7 abutment and molar measured in the previous paper. The gingival and marginal line in the abutment tooth could be recognized more certainly by the "GIN-MAGN" program, and the three dimensional data of tooth crown above the gingival line could be output and saved. To prepare the data base of the occlusal surface of tooth crown, the data of tooth crown above the gingival line of 7 molar were also output by the "GIN-M" program. The data around the toothneck were excluded with an arbitrary height above the gingival line in order to connect smoothly with the margin line of the abutment tooth. The tooth crown data were set up on the abutment data by means of the program "AB-CR-E". In the present system, even though the occlusal condition with the antagonistic tooth could not be taken into account, the CAD procedure to set up a tooth crown with an arbitrary size on the arbitrary position of abutment tooth could be accomplished, and the toothneck data of crown were connected with the margin of abutment tooth.
Tooth preparations and seating techniques of castable ceramic crowns differ from metal ceramic crowns. This study evaluated the variable effects of cementation on the marginal adaptation of Dicor, Cerestore, and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. The shoulder preparation was maintained for ceramic crowns, and a cavosurface bevel was designed for metal ceramic crowns. Crowns were made with a replication size of 10, placed on master dies, and the marginal openings measured with a Nikon Measurescope 20 instrument. Thirty crowns were cemented with zinc phosphate cement and the recommended clinical force. Marginal adaptation was not improved with a gingival bevel preparation or an increased seating force. The best marginal adaptation was recorded for Cerestore crowns.
