Chondroid syringoma.

We present the case of a 25-year-old man who presented with a slowly enlarging nodule on the upper lip. This nodule first appeared after minor trauma to the area. Our original differential diagnosis included foreign body granuloma, mucocele, inclusion cyst, and adnexal tumor. Histopathology results showed an encapsulated tumor consisting of 2 discrete lobules composed of numerous aggregates of cuboid epithelial cells with tubuloalveolar structures and keratinous cysts within a chondroid stroma-consistent with a chondroid syringoma. We compare and contrast the clinical and histologic characteristics of chondroid syringomas (arising from sweat glands) with those of pleomorphic adenomas (arising from salivary glands).

Adenoma, Pleomorphic↗

An unusual chondroid syringoma.

A case report of a clinically malignant mass measuring 10 x 8 x 10 cm over the shoulder of a 55-year male patient is presented. In the ultrasound examination, it was indicated that the soft tissue tumor did not invade the chest wall. The excisional biopsy revealed a benign chondroid syringoma. This is a report of a quite rare chondroid syringoma case and its clinical presentation, localization, and diameter.

[Morphology and clinical significance of syringomas of the external auditory canal (author's transl)].

Syringomas of the external auditory canal ("ceruminomas"), are very rare their morphology is varied and their clinical course hardly predictable. Their nomenclature is controversial and easily misunderstood. Two cases of syringomas of the external auditory canal are reported (one adenoma and one adenoid-cystic carcinoma) which were also studied by means of electron microscopy. The morphology and clinical significance of these tumors is discussed.

Chondroid syringoma of the upper lip: a case report.

Chondroid syringoma (mixed tumor of the skin) is a rare benign neoplasm of the sweat glands which often occurs in the head and neck region. We present a 73-year-old white farmer man with a mass in the anterior surface of the upper lip that was histologically diagnosed as a chondroid syringoma after surgical wide excision. There were no signs of recurrence during a follow-up of 14 months.

Adenoma, Pleomorphic↗

Chondroid syringoma of the arm: an unusual localization.

Chondroid syringoma (CS) is an uncommon, benign, sweat-gland tumor. The usual presentation is of an asymptomatic, slowly growing mass, typically located on the head and neck region. We present a case of a CS located in the right arm of a 43-year-old woman. This tumor developed slowly over 8 years. The diagnosis of CS was made by histopathological examination; it showed an abundant chondroid stroma intermingled with a fibro-adipoid tissue. There was no recurrence after total excision of the tumor with a 2-year followup. The unusual localization of chondroid syringoma made an accurate preoperative diagnosis difficult and diagnosis was achieved only by microscopy. Surgical tumor excision remains the best therapeutic option to avoid relapses of this tumor. Close followup is recommended because malignant transformation, although rare, is possible.

Adenoma, Pleomorphic↗

Chondroid syringoma of the external ear canal presenting as a cyst.

Chondroid syringoma of the external ear canal is a rare, usually firm or polypoid tumor, representing the cutaneous counterpart of pleomorphic adenoma of salivary glands. We report a very rare case of chondroid syringoma in a 40-year-old man who presented with a fluid-containing cyst in the external ear canal. Clinical and radiological examinations showed involvement of the whole external canal to the annulus. The cystic lesion was totally excised along with the overlying skin. The postoperative course was uneventful.

Adenoma, Pleomorphic↗

Disseminated syringomas of the upper extremities. Case history and immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study.

A case of disseminated syringomas with unusual distribution and high age of onset is reported. The 66-year-old male patient presented with multiple lesions confined to dorsum of both hands and flexor side of both forearms. Morphological and immunohistochemical studies using keratin, S-100, carcinoembryonic antigen, and epithelial membrane antigen antibodies were performed both at light microscopical and ultrastructural level. These investigations revealed the presence of keratin filament containing colloid bodies near syringomatous epithelia. Reactivity for carcinoembryonic antigen could be demonstrated on the membranes of intracytoplasmic vesicles as well as within luminal debris. Absence of S-100 and epithelial membrane antigen in the tumor and ultrastructural features indicate ductal origin of syringoma.

Adenoma, Sweat Gland↗

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma masquerading as syringoma of the scalp.

We report a case of primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the scalp in a 72-year-old man. It consisted of syringomalike papules scattered on an erythematous plaque that showed a loss of hair. Histologically, the papular lesion at first showed numerous tadpole-like tubular structures similar to those found in syringoma. Subsequent histologic studies over 2 years revealed the presence of numerous cribriform tumor masses penetrating into the subcutis, reaching the galea aponeurotica. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells showed no staining with either polyclonal (P) or monoclonal (M) antibodies to carcinoembryonic antigen. M-cytokeratin, M-vimentin, and P-S-100 protein antibodies were positive only focally as were other antibodies, including anti-actin, anti-human lactalbumin, anti-beta 2 microglobulin, and breast cancer--associated antigens. The neoplastic cells showed no binding to lectins that characteristically react with the sweat apparatus, except for concanavalin A (con A) and peanut agglutinin (PNA), although the striking histopathologic resemblance to syringoma suggested its histogenic relation to eccrine glands initially.

Adenoma↗

Eruptive syringomas.

We report the case of a seventeen-year-old woman with a rare presentation of a common appendageal tumor, the eruptive syringoma. We treated her with the retinoid isotretinate, which we had hoped would result in prevention or reduction of new tumors and disappearance of pre-existing lesions. The syringomas remained stable throughout our treatment effort and new lesions continued to appear.

Adenoma, Sweat Gland↗

Sclerosing syringoma.

Syringoma, a benign sweat gland tumor which may occur in the eyelid, commonly presents as multiple lesions in young women. We had an unusual case of a sclerosing syringoma found as a single lesion in the lower eyelid of a man.

Adenoma↗

Response of multiple syringomas to isotretinoin.

Two female patients with multiple syringomas were treated for 5/6 months with cumulative doses of 9 and 11 g isotretinoin respectively. Clinically, the appearance of the lesions in both patients improved from the third month on. After therapy, the lesions were flattened, softened, and skin coloured. Histologically, a marked reduction of size and numbers of syringomas was observed, and the contents of cystic lesions seemed reduced 6 months after therapy. Ultrastructurally, changes in the cystic and ductal epithelium correspond with the keratin modulating efficacy of the drug, but also point at a drug-induced change in intracellular lipid composition.

Adenoma↗

Fine needle aspiration cytology of chondroid syringoma. Report of a case.

A case of chondroid syringoma of skin was diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology and confirmed by histopathologic study. The most important feature in both smears and cell blocks prepared from the aspirate was the presence of two distinct components: an epithelial component and a contrasting stromal component with a chondroid appearance. The clinical and pathologic features of chondroid syringoma are reviewed and the differential diagnosis is discussed, especially for the benign and malignant variants of this lesion.

Adenoma, Sweat Gland↗

Chondroid syringoma of the eyelid.

Chondroid syringoma (mixed tumour of the skin) is a rare cutaneous neoplasm of probable eccrine sweat gland origin. It occurs most commonly in the head and neck as a firm intradermal or subcutaneous nodule. Occurrence in the periocular tissues is unusual. We describe a 74-year-old woman with chondroid syringoma of the upper eyelid that arose as a painless, slowly enlarging subcutaneous mass. Histologically the lesion consisted of epithelial cell-lined tubular branching lumina that were scattered in an abundant fibrous stroma. Local excision appears to be adequate treatment, although malignant transformation may rarely occur.

Adenoma, Sweat Gland↗

[Syringoma of the vulva].

A case of a 20-year-old white female patient is presented, who developed syringomas on the labia majora. The 12 cases that have previously been described in the literature are summarized. Syringomas should be considered in the differential diagnosis of papular lesions of the vulva and are probably more common than is reflected in the number of cases published.

Adenoma↗

Acral syringoma: electron microscopic studies on its origin.

A case of acral syringoma associated with the usual eruption on the lower eyelids was examined by light and electron microscopy for the first time. In the upper dermis there were a few ducts and cystic formation, while predominant atypical solid strands composed of tumor cells were often seen by light microscopy. Electron microscopy showed the formation of small ducts in the solid strands and numerous microvilli with a pinching off of the luminal tumor cells. A large number of multivesicular dense bodies (mvb) and keratohyalin granules were also found in the periluminal tumor cells. The ducts resembled embryonic intra-epidermal ducts. The unusual anatomical sites of eruption and the electron microscopic findings suggest an eccrine intra-epidermal duct origin of acral syringoma.

Adenoma↗

[Chondroid syringoma].

Chondroid syringoma is a rare benign appendage tumor of the skin. Histologically, the tumor is characterized by the presence of sweat gland elements surrounded by a cartilage-like material. The lesions are most frequently located around the nose. Clinically, they appear as solitary, firm, circumscribed, slowly growing intracutaneous or subcutaneous nodules. In the majority of cases the clinical diagnosis is either basal cell epithelioma or cyst. This paper calls attention to the characteristic clinical features of chondroid syringoma as observed in five patients.

Aged↗

Eruptive generalized clear cell syringomas.

Syringomas occur quite commonly, but the occurrence of widespread lesions is rare. A patient is described with the unique coincident findings of eruptive generalized syringomas associated with an unusual microscopic preponderance of clear cells.

Adenoma↗

Simultaneous occurrence of intradermal nevus and syringoma.

A 59-year-old white woman presented with two lesions on her face. A clinical diagnosis of intradermal nevus was made and the lesions were excised. In each lesion, histopathologic examination showed an intradermal nevus associated with syringoma. The unusual association of syringoma and intradermal nevus in two lesions forms the basis of this report.
