Isoenzyme characterization of Leishmania isolates from Lebanon and Syria.

Leishmania parasites were isolated from 22 Lebanese and 5 Syrian patients with active skin lesions for whom the diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological examination. The isolates were characterized by starch gel electrophoresis and analysis of 13 enzyme systems. Eight Old-World reference strains were used for comparison. One Syrian isolate belonged to Leishmania major, and four Syrian and two Lebanese to Leishmania tropica. Contrary to expectations, the majority of Lebanese isolates were related to the Leishmania donovani complex, and more particularly Leishmania infantum.

Frequency of herpes simplex virus in Syria based on type-specific serological assay.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 antibodies in Syrian populations. Serum samples collected between 1995-1998 from a total of 1293 healthy persons, neonates, pregnant women, labial herpes patients, kidney transplantation patients, atherosclerosis patients, cervical cancer patients, patients with suspected herpetic keratitis, viral encephalitis patients, patients with sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS patients, female prostitutes and bar girls. METHODS: Serum samples were studied by enzyme immunosorbent assay using herpes simplex virus type-specific antigen, glycoprotein (gG). RESULTS: In the healthy group, herpes simplex virus type 1 infections correlated mostly with age and was prevalent among subjects >30 years (approximately 95% of persons in our country have herpes simplex virus type 1 antibodies by 30 years of age), while they varied moderately among other groups. Herpes simplex virus type 2 prevalence varied greatly among the groups defined by sexual activity and was associated with risk behavior for prostitution. Herpes simplex virus type 2 seroprevalence was highest among prostitutes (34%) and bar girls (20%); lowest in healthy persons (0.15%); and intermediate in sexually transmitted disease patients (9.5%), cervical cancer patients (8%) and AIDS patients (4%). CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that infection of herpes simplex virus type 2 is very rare in persons in our country.

Pregnancy outcomes among Palestinian refugee women with sickle cell trait in Damascus, Syria.

OBJECTIVE: The results on pregnancy outcomes of mothers afflicted with sickle cell trait are still contradictory. This study aimed to examine the fetal and maternal outcomes among a cohort of pregnant women. METHODS: This is a prospective cohort study that examined the fetal and maternal outcomes among 98 women with sickle cell trait (HbAS) and 402 women with normal hemoglobin (HbAA). The study was carried out in 4 health centers serving Palestinian Refugees in Damascus, during the period November 2000 to May 2002. Hemoglobin electrophoresis was carried out for all newly registered pregnancy women. Women were then followed up until 40 days after delivery. Data was collected from antenatal records and interviews with women. RESULTS: Outcomes of pregnancy were compared between women with HbAS and HbAA hemoglobin. There was no statistical difference in the rate of abortion, distribution of birth weight and perinatal mortality. Women with AS hemoglobin reported higher incidence of complications after delivery, namely, fever (risks ratio=4.05, 95% confidence interval=1.34-12.3). CONCLUSION: In this study, pregnancies among women with sickle cell trait demonstrated high risk of complications after delivery. Watchful follow up of pregnancies among women with sickle cell trait is very necessary. Doctors and women must know that although the course of pregnancy among women with HbAS can be benign; it may well carry a high risk on women.
