[Diphtheria in Geneva at the end of the 19th century: the emergence of bacteriology and the use of serotherapy].

At the end of the 19th century, diphtheria was one of the infectious diseases striking children the most. With the development of laboratory medicine, appearing at this time throughout Europe, came the identification of the diphtherial bacillus, which not only causes a local infection, but also produces a poison attacking the whole organism. The discovery of this microbe will be an important vector for bacteriological research, leading to the elaboration of the antidiphtherial serum, considered the first specific and effective therapeutic product in the new experimental medicine. Through the study of diphtheria in the canton of Geneva, we examine the causes and consequences of the application of laboratory techniques and concepts in the sphere of clinical medicine.

[Antivenom serotherapy: its applications, its limitations, its future].

A hundred years after its discovery, authors review the antivenom therapy. Antivenom manufacture is described and antivenom therapy methods are presented. Indication of antivenom should be reserved to those who are really envenomed. Delay from the bite should not discredit antivenom therapy. Quantity of antivenom should depend on snake species, clinical features and evolution after treatment. Intravenous injections of antivenom should be strongly recommended as the most efficient. The future of antivenom therapy is emphasized.

Treatment of cardiovascular manifestations of human scorpion envenoming: is serotherapy essential?

Death due to sting by the red scorpion is not uncommon in parts of India. Extensive clinical study has shown that fatality is due to cardiovascular involvement as a result of autonomic storm. Prazosin and nifedipine helped to counter the physiological actions of scorpion venom on the sympathetic nervous system. Scorpion antivenom remains unobtainable for human scorpionism in India.
